rspec : command not found

I am following the railstutorial.org by Michael Hartl and installed rspec and rspec-rails on Mac OS X 10.6.4. Typing "rspec spec/" in the terminal returns "-bash: rspec: command not found". I've tried numerous things and googled to try find a solution, but now luck so far. There is another person going through the tutorial experiencing the exact same problem. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I apologize if this is the wrong place to report this problem.

Depends on how you've installed your bundle, but try bundle exec rspec spec.

Originally I installed using "bundle install" with a Gemfile (I think that's how it works... newbie). I messed around a lot and tried different things, so most recently I did "gem install rspec --pre" and "gem install rspec-rails --pre". When I enter "bundle exec rspec spec" I now get the following:
/Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/bin/rspec:19:in `load': no such file to load -- /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/specifications/bin/rspec (LoadError) from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/bin/rspec:19

Gem executables (like rspec) go in GEM_HOME/bin/, not GEM_HOME/specifications/bin/. The fact that /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/bin/rspec is looking for /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/specifications/bin/rspec suggests that something is wrong with your gem environment.

What is the content of /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/bin/rspec? Please post here or in a gist.

The way that I originally installed rspec & rspec rails was by adding the following bits in my Gemfile

group :development do
gem 'rspec-rails', '2.0.0.beta.18'
end

group :test do
gem 'rspec', '2.0.0.beta.18'
end

Then running "bundle install" and "rails generate rspec:install"

I was following the excellent rails tutorial at http://railstutorial.org/chapters/static-pages#sec:testing_tools

If it helps, I am running Rails 3.0.0.rc and ruby 1.8.7 p174. I installed ruby 1.9.2 using rvm, but for some reason running "rvm --default use 1.9.2" doesn't have the effect of changing the result of "ruby -v"... it continues to return "ruby 1.8.7"

The Gemfile config may be the root of the problem - the fact that one is in the development group and one in test. You don't need to include rspec, since it is already a dependency of rspec-rails, so I'd just require rspec-rails and do it in one statement for both groups:

group :development, :test do
  gem "rspec-rails", "~> 2.0.0.beta.19"
end

Note that we're up to beta 19 now, so please use that version.

I've made your recommended change to my Gemfile. I then deleted Gemfile.lock. Then ran "bundle install". Then tried "rspec spec" and "bundle exec rspec spec"... still no joy. Could/should I delete everything and start from scratch? If so, do I delete everything inside Gems/1.8/? Could/should I delete ruby 1.8.7? If so, where and how would I do that?

I can't really take the time to help you through an entire system re-bootstrap. Try just uninstalling all rspec gems and then re-installing via bundler and see how that goes.

@dkuyven - doing a little house cleaning. I'm going to close this one, but please open a new one if you find something that you can trace to rspec or rspec-rails.

Problem is solved. It had to do with my rvm installation/setup. The forum group at railstutorial.org did a great job of helping me, and the other person who was experiencing the same problem, to figure out the problem and solve it.
