Lightning Design System- Components Choice

I am Sharath, student from India. I am interested in working on the Lightning Design System project- "Create 3 or more Lightning Design System components".
I want to know if I should be proposing the components that are to be developed or if the components will be allocated by the team.
It would also be helpful to know what expectations the mentors have for the candidates interested in this project.

@sharaththegeek Hi Sharath, nice to know that you wish to participate in GSoC with this project. I suggest you go to the project repo and start working there. You can fix existing issues, add functionality to existing components to start with, once you are confident, you can open up an issue for proposing a Component. If the team/moderators approve of it, you can go ahead.

Talking about the proposal, I believe you are allowed to propose the components for your project as there are no specific components mentioned in the idealist.
And like @tanhengyeow mentioned in another thread, not being familiar with the technologies involved isn't an issue as long as you are willing to learn them. However, knowing react and having previous exposure will definetly help you to run through the codebase.
