Proteus Retune 0.4.0 brings the Atari 2600: the wrapper core redraws the picture and gives the games new sounds, with twenty games it knows in detail. It also plays GBA, DS and SNES rips, SPC sets packed as RSN, and streamed GameCube-era music.

Download: ProteusRetune-0.4.0-win64.zip below (Windows 64-bit). Unzip, close RetroArch, and follow READ ME FIRST.txt.

Atari 2600: picture and sound

  • Around Stella, the wrapper core redraws the picture from the objects the TIA builds it from, and processes the TIA's two voices separately. This works for any game: glow, shot trails, shadows, smoother objects, flicker fusion, a background treatment, filled HMOVE bars, stereo width, a low-pass filter and reverb.
  • Twenty games get more, each with its own scenery, colours, sparks, sounds and rumble: Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Combat, Warlords, Missile Command, Yars' Revenge, Pitfall!, Pitfall II, Adventure, River Raid, Asteroids, Kaboom!, Frogger, Berzerk, Pole Position, Dig Dug, Solaris, Jungle Hunt and H.E.R.O. Proteus recognises them by their ROM's MD5. The README's Games Proteus knows table says what each one gets.
  • A 32-voice synthesizer plays a game's sounds where the TIA's two voices would cut each other short, and the controller rumbles for what happens.
  • Scores, clocks and road lines stay crisp. Only shots, missiles, explosions and lights glow.
  • The zip includes the Stella core this needs: stellapx\stellapx_libretro.dll, built from the proteus-capture branch of sambena/stella. Copy it and its .info into RetroArch, then run install-core.ps1 -Core stellapx. RetroArch lists it as "Atari - 2600 (Proteus Retune + Stella)", and the options are under Proteus 2600.
  • For contributors: a standard for game modules (a kit, a template, make lint-games), make test2600 against Stella, and study tools in tools/2600/.

More music formats

  • Game Boy Advance GSF / miniGSF (viogsf), Nintendo DS 2SF (vio2sf) and NCSF (SSEQPlayer), SNES SNSF (LakeSnes), and RSN sets of SPC files (dmc_unrar).
  • Streamed music from the GameCube onward through vgmstream: DSP-ADPCM streams and containers (DSP, ADP, AST, HPS, THP, BRSTM, BFSTM, BCSTM, BWAV and more) and CRI ADX / HCA.
  • All of them work as replacement music, in the wrapper core, the DSP plugin, Studio's previews and proteus-cli render.

Under the hood

  • The effects engine now draws from a per-console source, the groundwork for handhelds.
  • The SNES IPL boot ROM table was removed from the SPC ripper, so the repository holds no console or game code. The trademark notice now names every company concerned.

Notes

  • Windows only. No games, ROMs or music are included; use games you own.
  • Proteus Retune is GPL-3.0-or-later. licenses\ carries the notices of every bundled library, including the new players and Stella (GPL-2.0-or-later).

Proteus Retune 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sambena sambena released this 15 Sep 14:59

Proteus Retune 0.3.0 plays Nintendo 64 USF rips and brings N64 games to Proteus Studio. Proteus is now licensed GPL-3.0-or-later.

Download: ProteusRetune-0.3.0-win64.zip below (Windows 64-bit). Unzip, close RetroArch, and follow READ ME FIRST.txt.

N64 music as replacements

  • .usf and .miniusf rips (with their .usflib) now work as replacement music in any game, through the wrapper core, the DSP plugin and Studio's previews. They are emulated by lazyusf2 at about 60× real time.
  • Songs not set to loop fade out at their tagged length; rips that cannot play (missing .usflib, damaged files) are reported when they load.
  • proteus-cli render <file> <seconds> <out.wav> plays any music file the way the engine does.

N64 games in Proteus Studio

  • Choose Mupen64Plus-Next as the N64 core in Settings, then open Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time (any revision). Every background song is listed by number and name.
  • Scan songs runs the game for a few seconds to find its sequence players. A profile that already follows them is recognised when the game opens.
  • Reference songs > Download fetches the game's USF set from Zophar's Domain and gives each song its rip to listen to. The set's other tracks are listed too, so N64 soundtracks can be the music source for any other game.
  • Generate INI writes the N64 profile with your replacements, copying a .miniusf together with its .usflib.
  • Play & rip, TAS movies and Scan folder remain SNES and NES features.

License

  • Proteus Retune is now GPL-3.0-or-later (releases up to 0.2.0 stay LGPL-2.1-or-later), so it can include lazyusf2 (GPL-2.0-or-later).
  • The MD5 code derived from RSA's reference implementation is replaced by one written from RFC 1321.
  • licenses\ carries the notices of every bundled library, lazyusf2 and psflib included.

Fixes

  • Closing an N64 game that never ran no longer hangs (Mupen64Plus-Next waited forever when a game was unloaded before its first frame).

Notes

  • Windows only. N64 support covers Super Mario 64 (USA) and Ocarina of Time (USA 1.0, Rev 1, Rev 2).
  • A few Super Mario 64 fanfares are matched to Zophar's track titles by best guess (Star Select, Key Collect, Star Appears).
  • No games, ROMs or music are included; use games you own.

Proteus Retune 0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sambena sambena released this 15 Sep 13:08

Proteus Retune 0.2.0 adds Nintendo 64 (Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time) and NES games, and new ways to silence a game's music while keeping its sound effects.

Download: ProteusRetune-0.2.0-win64.zip below (Windows 64-bit). Unzip, close RetroArch, and follow READ ME FIRST.txt.

Nintendo 64

  • Wrapper core for Mupen64Plus-Next (install-core.ps1 -Core mupen64plus_next): follows the game's background music sequence player and holds its volume at zero while a replacement plays. Sound effects, fanfares and item jingles are untouched, and the original volume comes back for songs left as the game's own. The mute works on the game's RAM, not the renderer; tested with Angrylion and both the HLE and cxd4 RSP.
  • proteus-cli n64 runs Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time (1.0, Rev 1, Rev 2) headlessly, finds the sequence players in RAM, and writes a profile listing every song by name. Point it at a whole ROM folder.
  • Song pickers under Quick Menu → Core Options → Proteus now show song names ("Song 0x2: Hyrule Field").
  • New profile keys: byte_order = n64, active / stopped, [hold], and the track option name=.

NES

  • Proteus Studio and proteus-cli find NES songs on FCEUmm, named from Zophar's Domain .nsf sets, including games whose sound code keeps no song number (a small "tap" on the sound routine reports each request).
  • Stop a game's music through its own RAM ([silence]) or with a code patch ([patch]) instead of muting channels, so sound effects keep playing.

Also

  • The DSP plugin finds the profile of a zipped game from RetroArch's history.
  • Fixes from three code reviews.

Notes

  • Windows only. N64 support covers Super Mario 64 (USA) and Ocarina of Time (USA); other N64 games are not recognised yet.
  • No games, ROMs or music are included; use games you own.
  • Please open an issue for bugs or games that don't work.

Licensed LGPL-2.1-or-later. Bundled library licenses are in licenses\.

Proteus Retune 0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sambena sambena released this 14 Sep 19:19

First public release of Proteus Retune: swap a game's soundtrack in RetroArch while keeping its sound effects.

Download: ProteusRetune-0.1.0-win64.zip below (Windows 64-bit). Unzip, close RetroArch, and follow READ ME FIRST.txt.

What's inside

  • DSP plugin (proteus_dsp.dll): select Proteus.dsp under Settings → Audio → DSP Plugin and keep using your usual core. The profile's channel mutes are saved as the game's core options.
  • Wrapper core (proteus_libretro.dll, installed as "Proteus Retune + Snes9x"): mutes the original music song by song, with per-song pickers under Quick Menu → Core Options.
  • Proteus Studio (ProteusStudio.exe): finds a SNES game's songs, names them with SPC sets from Zophar's Domain or SNESmusic.org, and maps replacements. It can also learn a song address from a TASVideos movie played in BizHawk, or scan a whole ROM folder. Generate INI writes the profile.
  • proteus-cli (proteus-cli.exe): Studio's scans and downloads from the command line.

Replacements can be WAV, MP3 or Ogg recordings, or another game's music on its sound chip (SPC, NSF, VGM, GBS, HES, KSS, AY, SAP).

Notes

  • Windows only. Studio's song finding works with SNES games through Snes9x.
  • No games, ROMs or music are included; use games you own.
  • Early release: please open an issue for bugs or games that don't work.

Licensed LGPL-2.1-or-later. Bundled library licenses are in licenses\.
