@RealSugary RealSugary released this 01 Nov 13:09

TypeThru types your clipboard as real key presses into VDI, remote desktops, consoles, and websites that block paste, and copies text back off the screen.

New

  • What's New: after an update, TypeThru shows what changed in every version since yours. Open it again from Settings › Help › What's New.
  • Read before you update: the update notice has a What's New button with the notes of every version you would get.

Fixes

  • Settings closes again: the close button of the Settings window works, and on a small screen the window fits and its options scroll.

Update

  • From 0.5, 0.5.1, or 0.6: open the TypeThru panel and choose Install. TypeThru updates itself, reopens, keeps Accessibility, and shows what's new.
  • From 0.4 or earlier: download TypeThru-0.6.1.dmg and replace TypeThru in Applications, then allow Accessibility again.
  • For bold and italic (new in 0.6): choose Settings › Virtual Keyboard › Set Up once if you have not since 0.6.

New install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.6.1.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.
  2. Open it. This beta is not notarized: if macOS says it cannot verify TypeThru, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
  3. Allow Accessibility, then choose Set Up and enter your password. Allow the Karabiner driver in System Settings if asked.

Requires macOS 13 or later; runs on Apple silicon and Intel (the Intel build is untested).

Coming from an older version? See everything that changed in CHANGELOG.md.

TypeThru-0.6.1.dmg.sig is the update signature the app checks; you do not need to download it.

@RealSugary RealSugary released this 01 Nov 11:56

TypeThru types your clipboard as real key presses into VDI, remote desktops, consoles, and websites that block paste. Now it also copies text back off the screen.

New

  • Copy Text from Screen (Control+], or the panel button): drag over any text you can see, even in a remote session or a picture, and it lands on your clipboard. Apple's on-device text recognition reads it and keeps paragraphs and table columns. The picture is deleted at once and nothing leaves your Mac. macOS asks once for Screen Recording permission. Turn it off in Settings › Copy Text from Screen.
  • Bold and italic: Markdown such as **bold** and *italic* from chat and AI tools is typed as real bold and italic (Control+B and Control+I) in Word, Outlook, and web editors. Choose Type as is or Remove the marks in Settings › Typing › Markdown for code, terminals, or a remote Mac. Code such as 2**8, *.txt, and **kwargs is left as it is.
  • Light and dark mode: the panel, Settings, and alerts follow your Mac's appearance.
  • New install window: the disk image opens to a clean window with just TypeThru and Applications.

Fixes

  • No surprise commands: a line break at the end of the copied text is no longer typed, so a copied command waits for you to press Return.

Update from 0.5 or 0.5.1

  1. Open the TypeThru panel and choose Install (or Settings › Updates › Check Now). TypeThru updates itself, reopens, and keeps Accessibility.
  2. For bold and italic with Virtual Keyboard, choose Settings › Virtual Keyboard › Set Up once and enter your password. This updates the helper. Until then, TypeThru removes the marks and reminds you once.

New install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.6.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.

Privacy

The README's Privacy section is updated: the screen is captured only when you choose Copy Text from Screen, only the area you select, and only its text is kept. The helper's only shortcuts besides Shift are Control+B and Control+I.

TypeThru is a tool, and you decide how to use it. Follow the rules of the computers, sessions, and websites you use it with.

TypeThru-0.6.dmg.sig is the update signature the app checks; you do not need to download it.

TypeThru types your clipboard as key presses into VDI and remote desktops where paste does not work.

New

  • Light and dark mode: the panel, Settings, and alerts now follow your system appearance instead of always being dark.
  • New install window: the disk image opens to a clean window with just TypeThru and Applications.

Fixes

  • No surprise commands: a line break at the end of the copied text is no longer typed, so a command copied with its line break waits for you to press Return in a remote terminal. Line breaks inside the text are still typed.

Update from 0.5

Open the TypeThru panel and choose Install (or Settings › Updates › Check Now). TypeThru updates itself, reopens, and keeps the Accessibility permission.

New install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.5.1.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.

TypeThru-0.5.1.dmg.sig is the update signature the app checks; you do not need to download it.

@RealSugary RealSugary released this 14 Oct 11:27

TypeThru types your clipboard as key presses into VDI and remote desktops where paste does not work.

New

  • Install updates in the app: when a new version is out, choose Install in the panel or in Settings › Updates. TypeThru downloads it, checks that it is signed by TypeThru, replaces itself, and reopens. No browser download, no Open Anyway, and Accessibility stays allowed.
  • Open at login: TypeThru asks once whether to start when you log in. Change it any time in Settings.
  • Glass Settings: the Settings window now has the same Liquid Glass look as the panel.

Fixes

  • Line breaks stay in place: some remote apps handled a new line after the keys that followed it, so a line break appeared a few characters late and a blank line could be lost. TypeThru now waits briefly after each line break.

Security

  • An update is installed only when you choose Install, and only if it comes from TypeThru's GitHub releases, carries TypeThru's update signature, and is a newer TypeThru signed with the same certificate as your copy. Otherwise nothing changes and TypeThru offers the release page.
  • Releases are now signed with a TypeThru certificate instead of ad-hoc, so macOS keeps the Accessibility permission across updates.

Install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.5.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.

Upgrading from 0.4

This is the last time you install by hand. Quit TypeThru, replace it in Applications with this version, open it (choose Open Anyway if asked), and allow Accessibility again. Setup does not need to run again. Later versions install from the panel.

TypeThru-0.5.dmg.sig is the update signature the app checks; you do not need to download it.

@RealSugary RealSugary released this 07 Oct 15:04

TypeThru types your clipboard as key presses into VDI and remote desktops where paste does not work.

New

  • Settings window: open it with the gear button in the panel. Open at login (new), your shortcut, typing method, speed, symbols, Shift+Return, Virtual Keyboard setup, updates, and diagnostics.
  • Update notices: TypeThru checks GitHub for a new version at most once a day and shows Update available with a Download button. Turn it off in Settings › Updates. It never downloads or installs anything by itself.
  • Your own shortcut: choose any combination in Settings. TypeThru warns about keys that also reach the remote session, refuses unsafe ones, and offers Reset to Control+.
  • Simpler panel: Type Clipboard, speed, Shift+Return, typing tests, Settings, and Quit.

Security

  • Setup copies its files into a folder only an administrator can write, checks them against fingerprints built into the app, and refuses changed files before anything runs as administrator.
  • The Virtual Keyboard driver must be signed by its own developer.
  • The Download button opens only TypeThru release pages.
  • The Privacy section in the README now describes the update check, and that other apps running as you could use the helper.

Fixes

  • No crash when the saved speed setting is damaged.

Install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.4.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.

Upgrading from 0.3

Quit TypeThru, replace it in Applications with this version, allow Accessibility again, and run Set Up once to get the protected setup. Later versions will appear in the panel.

@RealSugary RealSugary released this 06 Oct 14:42

TypeThru (formerly KeyTyper) types your clipboard as key presses into VDI and remote desktops where paste does not work. Press Control+\ to type.

Install

  1. Download TypeThru-0.3.dmg, open it, and drag TypeThru into Applications.
  2. Eject the disk and open TypeThru from Applications.
  3. This beta is not notarized. If macOS says it cannot verify TypeThru, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down, and choose Open Anyway. This is needed once.
  4. Allow TypeThru in Accessibility when asked, then choose Set Up and enter your administrator password to install the Virtual Keyboard.
  5. If macOS asks, allow the Karabiner driver in System Settings.

Requires macOS 13 or later. Runs on Apple silicon and Intel (the Intel build is untested).

What's new

  • New name and look: TypeThru, with a dark app icon and a Liquid Glass panel from the menu bar icon.
  • Setup inside the app with the standard macOS password prompt; no Terminal.
  • Typing speeds from an average typist (50 WPM) to an unrealistic 600 WPM.
  • Symbols without a key (bullets, smart quotes, dashes, …) are typed as plain keys.
  • Line breaks as Shift+Return by default, so chat apps make a new line instead of sending. Turn it off for spreadsheets.
  • Stops instantly on Esc, a mouse click, or switching apps or windows.
  • Typing tests: short, capitals, all symbols, smart symbols, and a long multi-line sample.

Upgrading from KeyTyper

Delete the old KeyTyper app, then run Set Up once in TypeThru. Setup removes the old helper; your settings are copied over.

@sayre4ux sayre4ux released this 06 Oct 06:44

First public beta. KeyTyper is a macOS menu bar app that types the clipboard as key presses, for VDI and remote desktop sessions where paste does not work. Press Control+\ to type.

This release is source only. Build it with ./build.sh as described under Install in the README. You need macOS 13 or later and the Xcode Command Line Tools.

So far it has been tested with one VDI client connected to Windows, on a US keyboard layout. Not yet tested:

  • RDP and other VDI clients
  • ISO and JIS keyboard layouts
  • macOS versions older than the one it was built on

If you try it, please open an issue with:

  • your macOS version and keyboard layout
  • the remote client type (VDI or RDP) and the remote OS
  • whether Check Virtual Keyboard said ready
  • the text from Last Attempt / Diagnostics (it does not contain your clipboard)

Report security issues privately from the Security tab, not in a public issue.

To remove it, choose Uninstall KeyTyper… from the menu, then delete KeyTyper.app.
