v1.16.0 — strength you can press for, and count
A new button makes a generated passphrase stronger, one press at a time, and the meter counts exactly what each press adds.
Added
- A 💪 button beside Generate. Each press capitalises one random letter anywhere in the phrase and adds a random digit or symbol at the edge of a word, taking turns, so two presses cover the capital, digit and symbol that many sites ask for. The button shows what the next press is worth (for example 💪 +12 bits), and an ⓘ beside it explains.
- The gain is counted, not estimated, and priced as if an attacker knows the button exists. Inserted characters never occur in a listed word, each word edge takes at most one, and each letter is capitalised at most once, so every possible result is equally likely and the count is exact. An exhaustive check of small cases, a hyphenated word included, matched the formula outcome for outcome.
- Only site-friendly symbols are used:
!#$%&()*+,./:;=?@[]^_{|}~. The hyphen is left out because the EFF list contains hyphenated words; quotes, the backtick, the backslash and angle brackets are left out because sites often refuse or mangle them. - The crack-time Details line says what was added, e.g. "6 words drawn uniformly from the EFF large wordlist, then 4 capitals, 2 digits and 2 symbols placed at random".
Changed
- The button is offered only while the box holds the phrase exactly as drawn and strengthened; after a hand edit it steps aside, since it no longer knows what it would be adding to. It is hidden for the ASCII, hex and PIN pools, and starting over with Generate or a new word count clears the additions.
