rutter is now installable as a Claude Code plugin. This release also fixes a bug that likely stopped position capture from ever working, and makes the server behave in hosts that don't fill in plugin options.

Install (Claude Code)

/plugin marketplace add shinytoyrobots/rutter
/plugin install rutter@rutter

Choose your notes folder when asked, then run /reload-plugins. Claude Code installs the dependencies from the lockfile, so there is no build step. Requires Node 22 or newer.

Highlights since v0.2.0

  • Installable from GitHub. The repository is its own plugin marketplace, with the server and the capture hook bundled.
  • The index builds itself. A fresh install no longer answers every search with "No notes matched". The server builds its index at start and rebuilds only when your notes, session records or position streams have changed. It never rebuilds from a partial view of your notes, and a rebuild that fails part-way cannot leave an index that looks up to date.
  • Capture instructions no longer get cut off. Claude Code truncates server instructions at 2,048 characters, and ours were about 4,250. The style contract and the whole position-line instruction never reached clients, which likely explains why no positions were ever captured. The instructions now fit, and the reporting guidance moved into the tool descriptions.
  • Hosts that don't fill in plugin options no longer break the server. An unresolved or empty setting is treated as unset, the default applies, and a line on stderr says why.
  • No stray failing server when you open Claude in a clone. The plugin's server is declared in plugin.json, not a root .mcp.json.
  • One version everywhere. The server now reports the package version, and a test keeps the package, lockfile, plugin manifest, server and changelog in step.

Other hosts

  • Grok loads the plugin from your Claude Code install automatically. It does not fill in the notes-folder option, so rutter uses ~/Documents/knowledge-vault unless LIBRARIAN_VAULT_PATH is set where you launch Grok.
  • Codex cannot use the plugin: it fills in none of a plugin's variables and installs no hook. It takes a few extra steps from a clone; see Getting started and the README.

Notes

  • rutter runs entirely on your machine. See the Privacy Policy section of the README.
  • This is a personal tool shared as a reference implementation, not a supported product.
  • Full list: CHANGELOG. v0.3.0 was never tagged; its changes are included here.
