@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Nov 14:55

The game comes built: the installer only needs your own Burnout Revenge disc image (the European or the American release, see SETUP.md).

Windows: download Burnout_Revenge_Installer-win-amd64.exe and run it.

Linux: download Burnout_Revenge_Installer-x86_64.AppImage, then

chmod +x Burnout_Revenge_Installer-x86_64.AppImage
./Burnout_Revenge_Installer-x86_64.AppImage

Run the installer again over an installed copy to update it; your settings are kept.

Android (arm64, Adreno or Mali): install Burnout_Revenge-android-arm64.apk. It opens as the installer: pick your disc image. A Mesa Turnip driver .zip is optional, for Adreno phones whose own driver misbehaves. This release is signed with a fixed key: uninstall an earlier build once, and later ones install over it, keeping your saves.

macOS (Apple silicon): download Burnout_Revenge_Installer-macos-arm64.zip, unzip it and run the app inside. It puts Burnout Revenge.app in ~/Applications, so the game starts from Launchpad or Spotlight. The app is signed ad hoc, so macOS stops it the first time it is opened after a download; allow it under System Settings, Privacy & Security, Open Anyway. The installed game logs to ~/Library/Logs/xerenge-burnout/.

Russian (a mod): unzip Xerenge-mod-locale_rus.zip into the installed game's game/mods/ and choose RUSSIAN in Driver Details > Settings > LANGUAGE. Its fonts are made at the first start from your own copy of the game; see MODDING.md to translate further or make a mod of your own.

Online play works out of the box - the installer points at the server (94639.snk.wtf), where everyone plays together; there is nothing to set up. An install from before the server is moved to it when the installer runs over it.

What's new in 0.4.10:

  • Split screen: each player's view is drawn in its own half of the screen; before, the second player's scene covered the first (GitHub #60). To play two at one PC on a keyboard and a pad, set keyboard = true and keyboard_player = 2 in xerenge.conf: the keyboard becomes player 2 and the pad stays player 1.
  • Online across networks: players behind different routers, on mobile internet or behind a VPN join each other's games; the game looks at its own address again every few seconds, so a phone moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data keeps being reachable, and the server drops the old connection of a player who logs in again (GitHub #49, #67).
  • Your own music, any size: the music folder is read in pages of 41 songs, turned with LB/RB in Song Manager ([MY MUSIC 3/35] in its title); recursive_scan = true reads the folders inside it too, and music_dir in xerenge.conf points at a folder of your choice. The chosen folder is in place from the first menu (GitHub #70).
  • LB goes back a song: wherever RB skips, LB restarts the song, or within its first three seconds goes to the one before (GitHub #55).
  • Kilometres per hour: SPEED COUNTER (MPH/KPH) on the GRAPHICS settings page, or speed_units = kph in xerenge.conf - the speedometer and the menus' speeds in km/h on an English game too (GitHub #55).
  • Modified R185 DX: its rims have spokes again (GitHub #48).
  • Title screen: the menu strobes far less over the background video, most of all on phones.
  • Linux: X11 is used whenever RenderDoc is on, so F12 captures work.
  • MODDING.md: a step-by-step guide to translating the game.

What's new in 0.4.9:

  • Wide screens: on a screen wider than 16:9 the race HUD goes to the screen's edges, the crash border and flashes cover the whole frame, and the menus' background videos fill the width (menu_video = zoom, stretch or box in xerenge.conf). Keep 16:9 turns it off. By GOATS2K (GitHub #53).
  • Your own music: Driver Details > Song Manager, LT switches EA Trax for the songs of a music folder beside the game (MP3 and WMA, names from their tags), RT sets their order. The folder is read again each time EA Trax is opened.
  • Mods: translations into languages the game was never released in, with fonts of their own - see MODDING.md. The installer makes game/mods; the Russian mod comes with the release.
  • Saves from Xenia and from a console: a Xenia profile folder put beside the game's saves, or a save package in import/, is taken in at the first start (GitHub #46).
  • Button icons: Driver Details > Settings > BUTTON ICONS - XBOX (the game's own) or PLAYSTATION.
  • Achievements: a notice as one is earned, and the full list under Player File > Stats.
  • Online: players on the internet reach each other through their routers (NAT traversal, GitHub #49); quick match finds only games of the kind asked for, Ranked or Player Match (GitHub #35).
  • Phones with a Mali GPU: textures are re-encoded for the GPU on all cores, and the first start prepares them in the background, so tracks and menus load without stalls (GitHub #32).
  • Portable: a box in the installer keeps the saves, caches and logs in the game's folder (GitHub #42).
  • Linux: runs natively on Wayland in a Wayland session.
  • Smoother starts: shader pipelines are made ahead and the driver's compiled ones kept between runs.
  • Installer: says why a copy failed and what to do (the game running, Program Files, Controlled folder access), and checks the folder before the long steps (GitHub #59, #65).
  • B on the main menu asks whether to quit the game.

Online play works out of the box - the installer points at the server (94639.snk.wtf), where everyone plays together; there is nothing to set up. An install from before the server is moved to it when the installer runs over it.

What's new in 0.4.8:

  • Settings in the game: Driver Details > Settings has GRAPHICS, HACKS and DEBUG pages next to the sound rows - the installer's options as the game's own rows, kept in xerenge.conf. Bloom, motion blur, anti-aliasing and sharpening change at once; for the rest, leaving Settings offers to restart the game (A restarts it, B keeps playing). The European release also gets a Language row there.
  • A real launcher instead of scripts: Burnout Revenge.exe on Windows, burnout_revenge on Linux and macOS, beside the installed game - it reads xerenge.conf and starts the game. Steam users: the old Burnout Revenge.cmd / burnout-revenge are gone; add the new launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game instead (GitHub #26).
  • Xbox Live and Burnout Clips connect in seconds again, not after 2 minutes (GitHub #24).
  • EA Trax no longer goes silent after skipping a challenge-complete, rank-up or signature takedown video (GitHub #29).
  • GRAPHICS in the pause menu: the race's Options get bloom, motion blur, sharpening and anti-aliasing, changed without leaving the race.
  • News: the game's News screen shows the latest Xerenge release's notes.
  • Debug > RenderDoc: off hides RenderDoc's "Capturing Vulkan" overlay where RenderDoc is installed, e.g. on a Steam Deck (GitHub #31).
  • Online: a player joining a game hosted through another server is told about it before the host invites them (GitHub #34).

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Oct 07:55

Linux: download Burnout_Revenge_Installer-x86_64.AppImage, then

The app is signed ad hoc, so macOS stops it the first time it is opened after a download; allow it under System Settings, Privacy & Security, Open Anyway. The installed game logs to ~/Library/Logs/xerenge-burnout/. An Intel build is on the way, held up only by a long CI queue for that runner - it'll follow in a later release.

Online play works out of the box - the installer points at the server (94639.snk.wtf), where everyone plays together; there is nothing to set up. If the "Server address" field on the installer's Network tab is empty (an install from an older version), put 94639.snk.wtf there.

What's new in 0.4.7:

  • The American release is supported (GitHub #21, thanks to its author): the installer takes either disc image. Ultrawide and the logo skip work on both.
  • Online with three players and more (GitHub #19): the third player no longer drops everyone or hangs on "Returning from game"; a host leaving closes the game for all.
  • Burnout Clips online: clips are shared to the server, and the Top 20 and the recent players' clips show them. Clip thumbnails are still black.
  • Mali and other phones without BC textures (GitHub #20, #22): re-encoded ETC2 textures are cached on disk, and "Textures as ETC2" in the installer prepares all of them ahead - no more stutter while textures are re-encoded in a race.
  • Vertex cache fixes and draws finished on the worker thread (GitHub #15, #16, thanks to xenophobentx).
  • plume is the default renderer; music plays in Replay after a race.

The installed game logs to ~/Library/Logs/xerenge-burnout/. An Intel build is on the way, held up only by a long CI queue for that runner - it'll follow in a later release.

Online play works out of the box - the installer already points at a shared lobby server (94639.snk.wtf), so you do not need to run your own. Your own online server, if you want one instead: ealobby-linux-amd64 or ealobby-win-amd64.exe is a lobby server for the online mode. Run it on a machine whose TCP ports 31860 and 31861 the players can reach, and point the installer's "Server address" field at it (or start the game with --lobby-server=<that machine>).

0.4.6 is an emergency hotfix for Android (GitHub #4: a black screen or a hang right after loading on many phones):

  • Phones with a Linux kernel older than 4.17 (most Android 10 and older devices: Snapdragon 845/660, Helio G80, Kirin 960...) crashed while starting the game: guest memory was mapped at the wrong address. Fixed in the SDK.
  • ARMv8.0 CPUs (Snapdragon 660, Kirin 960: Cortex-A73/A53) stopped at start with an illegal instruction; the APK is now built for ARMv8.0, with atomics chosen at run time.
  • Adreno 5xx (Redmi Note 7 and the like): textures came out as black and grey slabs and cars were invisible - BC textures are re-encoded as ETC2 where the GPU lacks them, and its broken depth clamp is avoided. A new hack, "Textures as ETC2", forces the re-encoding on any GPU.
  • Vertex inputs fit the 16 a Mali-G71 takes (its GPU hung at the first frame).
  • Vulkan 1.0 drivers (old Mali) can now start the game, but this is not fully tested yet: a Mali-G71 still shows a black screen.
  • An unhandled crash no longer spins and fills the log with one line; it is logged once, with where it happened.
  • The installer has a log folder, chosen like the disc image: the logs are copied there, since the app's own folder cannot be opened from a file manager.
  • On-screen controls: a layout editor (drag and resize every button, the stick and the menu button; Done saves it, Reset restores it) and Xbox View/Menu glyphs for Back and Start, from PredatorWoah's XerengePlus fork.

What is new since 0.4.0:

  • macOS, Apple silicon for now (Intel to follow): the SDK builds its own Vulkan loader and MoltenVK (via plume's new SDL/Vulkan-on-Metal path) and stages them next to the game, so the installer app needs nothing but your disc image.
  • The installer's render resolution can be any WIDTHxHEIGHT now, not just the fixed presets.
  • Online multiplayer fixes: a missing lobby cvar that could fail the build, and a crash from a malformed IDENT field are both fixed; a texture-slot regression that stretched some textures into black triangles is reverted.
  • CI is considerably faster: the SDK and the plume/XenosRecomp forks are cached by commit instead of being cloned and rebuilt on every run.

Without it, the copies on one LAN find each other's games with no server at all.

What is new in 0.4.0:

  • Faster on phones' GPUs: a render pass loads and keeps only the attachments something reads, the frame goes to the screen at its own size (the phone scales it), reflections can be redrawn two faces a frame ("Reflections in turns"), pixel shaders run in half precision where it is safe, anisotropic filtering is a choice (off, 4x, 8x; 4x on Android by default).
  • Less work on the CPU: constants, textures and memory checks no longer redone for every draw when nothing changed.
  • Bloom off keeps the sky blue and the picture as bright as with bloom, without the glare; motion blur off now really turns the blur at speed off.
  • Frame generation (frames drawn between the game's, for 90-120 Hz screens), a 30 fps lock, 16:10 screens, render resolutions below 720p, and back twice to quit on Android.
