@silverstein silverstein released this 21 Oct 17:07

Minutes 0.30.8 fixes the macOS crash when Minutes restarts after an update or a permission change. It also improves final transcripts when microphone and system speech overlap, and keeps automatic summary language consistent across a meeting.

If Minutes won’t open, download the Mac installer directly, quit Minutes if it is running, and replace the app in Applications. This keeps your meeting files, settings and models. An older process may still show its shutdown crash once while installing this patch; reopen Minutes to run the fixed version.

What changed

  • On macOS, restart now performs explicit cleanup, relaunches Minutes, and exits without running the C++ static destructors involved in the shutdown abort. An update could previously install successfully while the old process showed “Minutes quit unexpectedly” on its way out. Permission-recovery restarts use the same fix. #1193
  • Final meeting processing transcribes separately saved microphone and system tracks independently, then combines their utterances on the original timeline. The louder track no longer masks microphone words simply because both tracks were mixed into one speech-recognition input. #1191
  • Automatic summary language is resolved once from a reliable transcript sample before adding notes or processing chunks. Explicit language settings retain their precedence. #1192
  • Known English/French “no decisions” and “no action items” placeholders are excluded from structured results and project extraction. Substantive negative decisions remain intact.
  • Successful Sherpa transcription no longer produces the misleading “silence strip removed ALL audio” diagnostic.

Who should care

Anyone seeing a crash report after updating or restarting Minutes, people whose microphone speech overlaps with computer-call audio, and anyone summarizing long meetings with automatic language selection.

CLI / MCP / desktop impact

The restart fix applies to the macOS desktop app. Windows and Linux retain Tauri’s restart behavior.

The transcription change applies to final meeting processing in the shared local engine, including desktop recordings and CLI processing with both saved sources. Live transcription, memos and single-source recordings keep their existing routes. No public CLI commands or MCP tools are added. Agent integrations benefit when they use the updated local engine; an authorized input that already represents a single mix remains one input.

Breaking changes or migration notes

No configuration or stored-meeting migration is required. Existing transcripts, summaries and inferred entities are not automatically rewritten. Uncertain speaker attribution can retain microphone/system labels instead of a person's name. Recording and processing restart guards remain in place.

Known issues

The first in-app update from an older version may still show that older process's shutdown crash after installation. Once 0.30.8 is running, subsequent restarts use the fixed path. Quitting Minutes normally before installing the DMG avoids using the older in-app restart path.

Separate source recognition does not separate simultaneous voices already mixed inside the system track. Cross-source echo can appear twice, and sequential recognition of two tracks can take longer than recognizing one mix. If saved source tracks are unusable, final processing can stop with an error; the original recording is retained for recovery.

Automatic language detection abstains on short or uncertain input. A summary model can still ignore the requested language, and unrecognized absence wording may remain. Windows desktop remains experimental and unsigned.

Thank you to @erikcw for identifying and fixing the restart crash, and @astro-roro for the detailed overlapping-speech and summary-language reports.

Install or update

After updating the desktop app, reopen Recall so its terminal uses the matching bundled CLI.

  • macOS desktop: download the DMG below, or run brew update followed by brew upgrade --cask silverstein/tap/minutes.
  • Command line: cargo install minutes-cli --version 0.30.8, or brew upgrade silverstein/tap/minutes for an existing Homebrew install.
  • MCP server: npx minutes-mcp@0.30.8 with the updated local Minutes engine, or install the updated desktop extension below.

Minutes remains free and open source. Meeting capture and transcription run locally. Optional cloud AI and connected assistants receive the content you authorize under their settings; file sync and backups you configure are separate.
