v0.9.0 — Signed replies and pasted statements
Co-authors can now sign their answers with ORCID, and you can start a draft from a statement you already have.
- Paste a statement: paste an existing CRediT statement into Import and the grid fills in, matched to the people in the draft. It never leaves your browser.
- Signed replies: a co-author can sign in with ORCID before sending their answer, and the Review tab shows which replies are verified.
- Published practice and the census: a tab beside the grid shows how often published papers in your field give each role, and the new census page shows how 8.2 million open-access articles use CRediT. The figures are preliminary.
- More exports: a Crossref 5.5 contributors block and a tenzing spreadsheet, from the app or the CLI.
- Typst package: print the statement, a role table and the heatmap in a Typst document, in all nine languages.
Upgrading the npm package: it needs Node 22 or later, and detectFormat can now return "statement".
Everything else, including the fixes, is in the changelog.
v0.8.1 — Clearer CLI errors
A small fix release. Running credit-matrix with no command now prints one line naming the commands and exits with 2, like any other mistake on the command line. Before, it printed the help and exited with 0, so a script could not tell it from success.
The package page on npm now shows how to install it from npm. This is also the first version published straight from GitHub Actions, so npm links it to the build that made it.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.8.0 — Beyond the browser
CRediT Matrix now works outside the app too. The credit-matrix npm package holds the statements, file formats, heatmap and ask links the app uses, for your own scripts and sites. It comes with a command line tool (npx credit-matrix statement team.csv) and a <credit-matrix> element that shows a statement and heatmap on any web page. A Quarto extension and a MyST plugin write the statement straight from a document's author list.
You can now import a tenzing contributor spreadsheet saved as CSV. The new conformance/ folder holds contributor lists with the JATS XML written for each, checked against the JATS 1.3 DTD and the JATS4R rules, so other tools can test their output against them.
Names with particles ("Anne van der Berg") now keep them in the surname, and initials skip them. Drafts open in two tabs no longer save over each other. When the browser stops saving, a visible notice now says so. CSV, JATS XML and DOI import handle more real-world files.
After updating, reload any other tab that still has CRediT Matrix open.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.7.0 — Ask, compare, settle
A co-author's answer no longer overwrites your row. It is kept beside it, and the new Review tab shows each difference as "You ●● Supporting → Ben ●●● Lead", with Use Ben's, Keep yours, Ask Ben about this, and Undo on every line. Asks go out blank by default, so people answer from scratch; check your guess still sends what you entered.
Co-authors answer on a page of their own, made for a phone, and send it back from the share sheet. The workspace is rebuilt around the grid, with a Statement, Team and Review panel. In dark mode the heatmap now gets brighter toward Lead.
The JATS export writes ORCID iDs as full links, marks shared first authorship only when two people share it, and is checked in CI against the JATS 1.3 DTD and the JATS4R rules. The site deploys from GitHub Actions only after every check passes.
After updating, reload any other tab that still has CRediT Matrix open.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.6.0 — Always on
The site is now plain static files. The server it used to run on hit its limits about once an hour and showed an error page for a minute or two. That can no longer happen.
Lookups now go straight from your browser to ORCID, Crossref and, new in this release, DataCite, so arXiv and Zenodo DOIs import too. About says what leaves your browser.
Also new: Delete all drafts, and a draft open in two tabs stays in step. Long contributor lists respond faster, and the app loads less code.
Fixed: a DOI lookup that finished after you closed the dialog could replace your contributors. Two quick ORCID lookups on one row could pair one person's name with another's iD. Going back to an older version could delete drafts saved by the newer one.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.5.0 — Tap the name
On a phone the header had no room for How it works and About, so the product name now opens a menu carrying both. About is one panel wherever it appears — the header link, that menu, and the welcome card, which until now never said what the app itself is. The wordmark no longer wraps out of the header, and the step headers stay on one line from xl.
Added: attribution for the CC BY 4.0 work the app redistributes. The role translations and NISO's badge image now link to the licence deed from the app rather than only from the repository, and the notice travels with the badge.
Removed: the static Saved in this browser line. The drafts menu and the welcome card already say it.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.4.0 — Room for the matrix
The matrix now takes the screen it needs: with many contributors it spreads across the full window (no more page-width cap), and with few it sits centered rather than stretching. The sample opens in Levels, both output panes share one layout pattern (mode visible, display options behind a gear), the CRediT badge and heatmap footer stopped jumping around, and a color-contrast bug in the narrow-screen Levels view is fixed.
Removed: the in-pane "Clear local draft" flow. Deleting a paper lives in the Drafts menu, which also carries the drafts-stay-in-this-browser note.
Full details in the changelog.
v0.3.0 — Ask your co-authors
CRediT Matrix can now collect contributions from co-authors without anyone learning the app first. Copy a link from a contributor's row and email it; they tick their own roles on a locked copy and send the link back; you open it and their row fills in — name, iD, and author status included — with a visible confirmation and an Undo.
Also new since v0.2.0: multiple drafts (one per paper), DOI import, offline support and installability, bulk role assignment, keyboard navigation across the whole matrix, a one-viewport desktop workspace, shared-first-authorship and corresponding-author markers, and rich-text statement copy.
Breaking: share links from earlier versions no longer open — share a fresh link from the draft instead. Self-hosters: the proxies now expect an API_RATE_LIMITER Worker binding (they work without it, unthrottled, and say so in the logs).
Full details in the changelog. Drafts stay in your browser; nothing is stored on a server.
v0.2.0
v0.2.0: One editable contribution grid
Minor bump: user-facing features plus an internal store migration, no data loss.
Notes
Added
- Editable contribution grid. Roles and contributors in one matrix — click a cell to assign a role, or cycle its contribution level in place. It doubles as the live heatmap, with transpose, full-name labels, and color controls that carry through to the SVG/PNG downloads.
- Bulk contributor entry. Paste an author list — commas, newlines, semicolons, or ORCID iDs — and each name gets a row. Inverted names ("Smith, J. A.") stay whole.
- Role definitions. Every role's info popover links to its full NISO definition.
- Contribution levels in by-role statements, annotating contributors the way by-author statements already annotated roles.
Changed
- The workspace fits one desktop screen: contributors beside the grid, statement full-width below.
- Exported heatmaps drop the image title and use a tighter legend.
- The About popover carries the version and source link; the header nav is down to two items.
- Copying an export format confirms on its own button.
Fixed
- Comma-separated lists are split per line rather than per comma, so a name with multiple initials or a compound given name survives a paste intact.
- An entry with no name in it no longer aborts the rest of a pasted list.
Removed
@nivo/heatmap, and the per-author role checklist it sat beside.
Local drafts migrate automatically.
v0.1.1
v0.1.1
Deployment simplification, a broad accessibility pass, and hardening of the core
domain logic (ORCID, imports, ordering, share links, hydration).
Features
- Accessibility: skip link, page heading and landmark regions, keyboard-operable
segmented controls, keyboard drag-to-reorder, and a live region announcing
copy, ORCID-lookup, and import status. - axe-core accessibility scans of the main screens in the Playwright/CI suite.
- About popover.
CITATION.cff,CONTRIBUTING.md, and the first ADR (docs/adr).- Zenodo archival with a citable DOI (10.5281/zenodo.21212954).
Fixes
- Tightened ORCID validation.
- Corrected CSV/XML import handling and statement ordering.
- Fixed share-link encoding and persisted client hydration.
- Cleaner ARIA for import/export flows.
Changed
- Removed the unused Docker/self-hosting path; CI and builds now standardize on
the Cloudflare OpenNext artifact. - Upgraded to Next 16; pinned
@types/nodeto the Node 26 runtime and declared
anenginesfield. - Dropped unused dependencies, dead exports, and speculative code.
