Using the variable font on the web

@font-face {
  font-family: "Circle Sans";
  src: url("CircleSans[wght].woff2") format("woff2-variations");
  font-weight: 100 900;
}

The long-stem g and the open ampersand are the defaults — no
font-feature-settings needed. fi and ff are standard ligatures, and
[drip] or U+E000 gives the Coffee Circle mark. ss02 gives the
original g, ss04 the original ampersand.

Changes

  • Circle Sans now derives from Albert Sans 1.25 instead of 1.31. The team's documents were
    set in Albert Sans 1.025 all along, and Albert Sans 1.3 — the base of every Circle Sans
    1.x — was not a kerning touch-up: it respaced every one of the 405 shared glyphs (a Thin
    H went from 681 to 745 units, a Medium comma from 285 to 207), moved the masters, and
    grew the kerning from ~107 pairs per master to ~9,200. Coffee Circle at Regular ran
    3.6 % tighter than before, and InDesign documents reflowed. On every glyph this fork does
    not touch, v2.0 shapes identically to the installed Albert Sans 1.025 - advance for
    advance, pair for pair - checked by shaping the same text through both.
  • The four changes carry over: the −52° Q tail, cut afresh from the 1.25 O in all eight
    masters; the long-stem g and the open ampersand as defaults, with the 1.25 originals in
    ss02 and ss04 (now named Original short-stem g and Original ampersand in the
    feature menu); the ff, assembled again from the 1.25 fi and f; and the drip mark,
    unchanged, since it never depended on the base.
  • Gone with the base: the Narrow width and the wdth axis, and the 140 glyphs 1.3 added -
    tabular figures, superiors and inferiors, fraction numerators and denominators, arrows,
    combining marks and a few letters (Ħ, IJ, ẞ). With them go the tnum, pnum,
    subs, sinf, numr, dnom and ss06 features. None were in use.
  • The v1.6 digit-to-separator kerning fix is moot: 1.25 never kerned digits against the
    comma or the period.
  • File names lose the width axis: CircleSans[wght].ttf, CircleSans-Italic[wght].woff2.
    The installer, the specimen and the release workflow follow.
  • The sources are now generated by scripts/derive-from-albert-sans.py from the upstream
    1.25 files rather than edited by hand, and stay in Glyphs format 2 like upstream: a
    glyphsLib round trip of that format rebuilds Albert Sans 1.25 table for table.
  • Circle Sans 1.x installs are replaced by the installer as usual. Documents set in 1.x
    reflow once more - back to where they were in Albert Sans 1.025.
