First release of Scratch Sheet: a floating, always-on-top spreadsheet sticky note for quick math on Windows.

Install

  1. Download Scratch-Sheet-Setup-0.1.0.exe below and run it. It installs for your user account only, so there is no admin prompt.
  2. The installer is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Open Scratch Sheet from the Start menu once. From then on it lives in the system tray and starts hidden when you log in. To turn that off, right-click the tray icon and uncheck Launch at startup.
  4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Space to show or hide the sheet.

Requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

What it does

  • Works like a tiny Google Sheet: hundreds of formulas, number formats, bold and italic, cell colors, borders, merged cells, and conditional formatting.
  • No title bar: drag the tab in the bottom-right corner, or hold Ctrl and drag anywhere on the sheet.
  • Three floating tool circles hold the text tools, the number formats (with a format painter), and the grid tools.
  • Save exports an .xlsx with values, formulas, number formats, bold and italic, font sizes, text and fill colors, borders, merged cells, and column widths (text alignment and conditional formatting rules stay in the app).
  • Autosaves everything, including your scroll position and active cell.

No account or sign-in. Your sheet is stored in %APPDATA%\Scratch Sheet\ and is kept through reinstalls and uninstalls.

Known issue

Save writes formulas that were filled down or pasted across a range as plain values: only the first cells of such a range keep their formula in the .xlsx. Fixed in 0.1.1.
