Argos 1.6.1 scans for Sprout notes from a Sprout pack instead of downloading the whole chain over p2p, and downloads the pack itself. (1.6.0 was not published.)
Sprout pack
- Scan Sprout from files instead of the full chain (#292). A Sprout scan used to download every full block from peers: hundreds of gigabytes and many hours. The Sprout pack holds every Sprout JoinSplit from block 1 to 3,500,000 in 36 files (1.28 GB). Blocks after 3,500,000 are still read from peers.
- The pack downloads automatically (#295). A mainnet Sprout scan with no pack folder downloads the pack into Argos's data folder, from Sovright's storage bucket or the files attached to this release, and scans from it. Finished files are kept, so an interrupted download resumes and later scans reuse them. If the download fails, the scan says why and reads every block from the network instead. Turn it off with "Download the Sprout pack automatically" in the Sprout pack section, or
--no-sprout-pack-downloadonargos scan-sprout. The download server sees your IP address. - Only this pack is accepted on mainnet. This release pins the pack's manifest SHA-256,
805435e69ae7a28c2045abcb5fa7b049de7e4c288f1f7c3d8d9529eb143ba57d. Argos refuses any other pack, checks every chunk against the manifest as it reads it, and checks that the chunks rebuild the manifest's Sprout tree root. Where you download the files from does not matter. - How the pack was checked. Two independent builds, from Zebra nodes in two regions, produced the same manifest hash. The end block hash matches the chain. CI builds a pack from a real node and finds a planted note in it. On mainnet, a scan of heights 1 to 3,500,000 from the pack and the same scan over p2p agree on every field of all 773,651 JoinSplits (digest
80629826a3a5e074b6ba4bbe4db0e893bfdcfba0f2cff7e64d13d5ffb5728ffd), the tree root, the spent nullifiers and the notes (#293).
Sprout scans
- Retry after a peer timeout keeps your wallet or keys (#290). Retrying a Sprout scan used to start from inputs Argos had already cleared, so encrypted wallets and pasted keys had to be opened or entered again. Retry now reuses the key source Argos still holds. Changing the wallet, keys, network or decrypt settings releases it.
- Custom peers are tried first (#290). Peers you list are dialed before public DNS seeds, with Argos's fallback peers kept as a separate last stage.
- Sprout scans against Zebra nodes no longer stall (#292). Zebra stops answering a block request after about 2 MB and leaves the rest out without saying so. Argos now asks for each block separately and re-requests any block a peer leaves out.
- Fresh Sprout scans against Zebra no longer stop at height 100,000 (#292). Zebra answers a fresh walk starting at the genesis block, which Argos counted as height 1, so every later block was one height off. Argos now drops genesis, and checks it against the network's genesis hash (#293).
- Choosing a Sprout pack folder no longer blocks the window (#293).
Account scans
- Clearer totals while an account search is still running (#288). Running and unfinished scans now mark balances as provisional and count accounts as loaded, not checked. The extension banner explains the rule: the default search stops after 20 consecutive unused accounts.
Security
-
HTTPS for the pack download uses rustls through reqwest, with the operating system's certificate store (#295).
-
tokio 1.53.3, for RUSTSEC-2026-0386 (#289).
-
pulldown-cmark 0.13.5, for RUSTSEC-2026-0414 (#292).
-
event-listener 5.4.2, rand 0.8.6 and 0.10.1, plist 1.10.0 with quick-xml 0.41.0 and time 0.3.47 (RUSTSEC-2026-0221, -0097, -0194, -0195, -0009) (#289).
-
GLib 0.18.5 with the upstream iterator fix backported, for RUSTSEC-2024-0429 (#289).
Sprout pack files
manifest.bin and chunk-0000.bin to chunk-0034.bin: 36 files, 1,284,933,002 bytes. Argos downloads these itself. To use a copy you downloaded instead:
- Download all 36 files from the assets below into one empty folder.
- In the Sprout scan panel, open "Use a Sprout pack instead of downloading the whole chain" and choose that folder. On the command line, pass
--sprout-pack <folder>toargos scan-sprout.
Argos checks manifest.bin against the hash pinned in this release, and every chunk against the manifest, so a missing or damaged file is reported rather than used.
