404 errors are not handled correctly when application is deployed as WAR to WebSphere (Cannot forward. Response already committed)

The bug happens with 1.1.5.RELEASE and 1.2.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT.

Using this project: https://github.com/spring-guides/gs-convert-jar-to-war-maven/tree/master/complete , deployed as a WAR to IBM WebSphere 8.0.0.9 (However, it works correctly on Tomcat), when I visit a non-existent page (For example: curl -i http://localhost:9080/gs-convert-jar-to-war-maven/nonexistent), I get HTTP 200 response and a blank page:

Given that it works on Tomcat (and a number of other servlet containers) I'd guess that this is a bug in WAS, although I haven't been able to recreate the problem to confirm that's the case.

I don't have access to 8.0.0.9. I've tried with WebSphere Liberty Profile 8.5.5.3 and it doesn't manage to deploy the app. It hits problems scanning the byte code with ASM:

I'm running WLP on Java 7. I've tried compiling the app with Java 6 and 7 with varying degrees of failure. I've reached out to someone on the WAS team to see if they can give us any pointers.

I can reproduce it with WebSphere Liberty Profile (wlp-developers-runtime-8.5.5.3 + wlp-developers-extended-8.5.5.3). I also got that same exception as @wilkinsona when the application is deployed, but it actually runs despite that exception.

One thing to note (but it's probably not relevant for this issue), running WLP on Oracle JDK 6 does not throw the CWWKC0044W: An exception occurred while scanning class and annotation data. exception on deployment, but running it on Oracle JDK 8 does.

I also never compiled the application with anything other than Oracle JDK 8. The Spring Boot parent pom.xml sets java.version to 1.6 by default so it doesn't matter if you compile it with a later Java version.

In either case, this bug is reproducible whether I run WLP with JDK 6 or JDK 8.

Thanks, @imgx64. I've managed to reproduce this now too on WLP 8.5.5.3.

A slight aside about the exception we're both seeing: WLP appears to use ASM 4.0 which doesn't support Java 8 and, somehow, the application's classes were being compiled such that the header indicated that it was Java 8 byte code. I don't know how that was happening, but looking at the hex of the class, it definitely was. After some rebuilding, the byte code's got the right version in the header and the app now runs for me.

When running in WAS, every request that's successfully mapped to a Servlet has its response committed by ServletWrapper at the end of the Servlet's service method. This prevents a Filter from forwarding the request or doing anything to the response's headers or status after it's passed the request down the chain.

In a typical Boot app, where the dispatcher servlet is mapped to /*, this problem applies to every request. I've considered a couple of workarounds, neither of which is generally applicable:

• Suppress flushBuffer in ErrorWrapperResponse so that ErrorPageFilter has a chance to set the status and forward the request, if needed. More than likely, this will break normal requests with very large chunked responses that need to flush the buffer before the request processing gets back to ErrorPageFilter
• Configure DispatcherServlet to throw an exception when it doesn't find a handler mapping and configure an error page for NoHandlerFoundException. Throwing an exception would prevent WAS from committing the response, but Boot's default resource handling means that there's always a handler for every request. Even if the resource handler was moved to a specific path, requests for non-existent static resources would still break. This would also only address this one case. Any other error response, for example a controller calling sendError, would still have a problem with the prematurely committed response.

We are having the same issue and found that you could disable the flush after service by adding the following line to the server.xml.

<webContainer invokeFlushAfterService="false"/>

Is that a bad idea ?

I doubt it too. Now that I know of the configuration option, some Googling tells me that other IBM products (WorkLight, for example) rely upon it. The option's available in 8.0.0.3 and later.

Yes, it fixes the problem. I added a "webcontainer custom property" (not the same as a "custom property") in WebSphere with key com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.invokeFlushAfterService and value false.
