Add a chapter inside the docs about how to turn on logging in Spring (i.e. explain the usage of commons-logging, log4j, logging levels).

Is there any usage difference for logging in Spring-based application compared to any other application? I do not think so. Seems that such chapter will be excessive, plain reference to Log4j/commons-logging documentation would be enough.

I hear you, and indeed, a full chapter on logging is overkill.

One of the questions that repeatedly comes up on the forums is how to configure logging though, so a small appendix is definitely in order, in part so that Costin can get another few forum postings by referring people to said appendix :)

Will get my vote.

Setup of log4j etc. is not trivial if you want to have Log4j using a log configuration file that is not named as default and resides outside your application etc.

I have several projects where it's mandatory that configurations files, log settings are stored in a folder that admin can access. So no more storing in WEB-INF/classes. etc.

Also it's good to name the file log4j-myprojectname.properties etc. so you are sure it's your configurationfile that is read and not some default one residing in an obscure classpath somewhere.

And don't get me started on WebSphere and how to get commons logging and log4j to work together. That alone could be a few chapters ;)

And as a developer of also standalone Spring applications the chapter should also have such scenarios in mind.

Also write how to enable the watch dog so changes can be triggered on-the-fly.
