Downloads

  • Desk for Linux, Windows and macOS is attached below as standalone builds (LanguageStudentDesk-linux.tar.gz, LanguageStudentDesk-windows.zip, LanguageStudentDesk-macos.zip). Each one bundles Python, Tk and every web app, so nothing else needs installing.
  • Android apps (SquirrelGo): no app changed since v0.0.3, so the current APKs are still the ones on each app's rolling *-latest release: Kana, Kanji, Japanese-English Dictionary, Phrasebook, Alphabets, Klingon and Orthodox Bible.

Desk (desktop)

  • 33 languages, with their data in one place. Every language now lives in languages/<id>/, with a meta.json that lists its characters, grammar, vocabulary and reference files, and one loader (LSD.load) that every learner uses. The Character Learner, Grammar Learner and Vocabulary Learner data moved there unchanged, and the Desk window builds its language dropdown from languages/registry.js, shown by name and native name (e.g. "Korean · 한국어").
  • Burmese, Odia, Tamazight and Manipuri are now Desk languages, which closes the v0.0.3 gap where these scripts were in Alphabets only.
  • Grammar, vocabulary and reference cards for 24 more languages: Greek, Hebrew, Georgian, Armenian, Thai, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Sinhala, Lao, Khmer, Burmese, Tibetan, Amharic, Mongolian, Tamazight, Cherokee, Inuktitut and Manipuri each get a 6-lesson grammar course with 30 drills, about 9 to 10 vocabulary decks of 110 to 150 words, and Reference Learner cards. Japanese gets a 139-word starter vocabulary deck.
  • One shared CJK character table (languages/cjk/) tags each character as hanzi, kanji or hanja, with each tradition's readings kept in its own language. It is seeded with 1,799 hanzi (every character in the HSK 3.0 level 1–6 word lists, with pinyin, meaning, HSK level and traditional form) and the 1,800 basic education hanja from Unihan.
  • Character Learner takes kanji from the shared table, shows hanzi by HSK level for Chinese and hanja next to Hangul for Korean, and its CJK detail cards show the other traditions' readings.
  • Language Learner paths: 20 Alphabets languages get a "First sentences" grammar stage, Greek gets its grammar stages, and the Chinese path starts from the HSK hanzi set.

Known gaps

  • The APKs are debug builds, and the desktop builds are unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper will warn on first launch.
