A new first-start setup: BaK-Again now finds your Betrayal at Krondor files with you, says exactly what is wrong when it can't, and can read them straight from GOG's installer, on Windows, Linux and Android.

You need the original game (sold on GOG). BaK-Again contains nothing from it; on first start it asks for your game files. Step-by-step help: Setting up BaK-Again.

File Platform
BaK-Again-v0.4.0-beta-windows-x64.zip Windows 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.exe
BaK-Again-v0.4.0-beta-linux-x64.zip Linux 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.x86_64
BaK-Again-v0.4.0-beta.apk Android — install the APK

New

  • A setup in three steps. Welcome, find your files, check. Large text and buttons made for a phone, in the game's parchment look.
  • Pick the GOG installer itself. Choose setup_betrayal_at_krondor_2.1.0.19.exe and BaK-Again takes the game files out of it — no installing first, no Wine on Linux. Each file is checked against the installer's own checksum.
  • A folder, a zip, or loose files. The files may sit a folder or two deeper; a zip is unpacked for you. On Windows a GOG install is found by itself.
  • Android picks the normal way. Android's own folder and file pickers, including cloud drives; the files are copied into the app and every copy is checked.
  • Help on every screen. "Where do I get them?" for your platform, and "Still stuck?" with the forum and your log (Share log on Android, Open log folder on desktop).

Fixed

  • File names in any case. startup.gam works as well as STARTUP.GAM, on Linux too (reported on the forum).
  • Only three files are needed: KRONDOR.001, FRP.SX, STARTUP.GAM. RESOURCE.CFG is optional — GOG's install folder doesn't have it next to the others.
  • Missing or damaged files are named, with what to do — on every platform, not only Android.
  • Checked at every start. A game file that went missing or was cut short after setup used to drop you back to the main menu without a word; now the setup opens and names it.

The custom-files (override) folder moved off the first screen; it is in Enhanced settings. Everything else is as in v0.3.2-beta.

A bug-fix release: combat behaves more like the original, with monsters' shots that fly, spells that finish before the next turn, and a few monster and item rules put right. The trap puzzles' diamonds can now be pushed with the mouse.

You need the original game (sold on GOG). BaK-Again contains nothing from it; on first start it asks for the folder that holds KRONDOR.001.

File Platform
BaK-Again-v0.3.2-beta-windows-x64.zip Windows 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.exe
BaK-Again-v0.3.2-beta-linux-x64.zip Linux 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.x86_64
BaK-Again-v0.3.2-beta.apk Android — install the APK
SHA256SUMS checksums

Fixed

  • Monster shots now fly. Crossbowmen, Shades and the other ranged monsters used to hit you without anything crossing the arena. Their bolts, balls and globs now fly to the target and cast a shadow, the special shots burst or flash on the victim as in the original, and the damage number appears when the shot lands.
  • Your own crossbow shoots a bolt. The party's crossbow shots used to fly the thrown-rock sprite in a bouncing arc. They now fly a flat arrow, as in the original.
  • The next turn waits for a spell to finish. A cast used to hand the turn on while its effect was still playing. The caster's turn now ends once the effect has landed.
  • Roric's Seal can backfire. In the original it goes off in the user's own hand 30% of the time; in BaK-Again it always went off on the target.
  • The Dread rests when it gives up. A Dread that neither attacks nor casts now rests and recovers a little, and only sometimes raises its guard. It used to always raise its guard and never recover.
  • Trap puzzles: pushing diamonds with the mouse. Clicking the ground on a diamond next to the party now pushes it; before, every push by mouse was refused. A diamond pushed onto crystal ground fires its beam over the run it lights and stays drawn until its burst ends.
  • Wordlock chests: the alien letters. A second click on a wordlock chest while its riddle was still loading started the puzzle twice, and a turned wheel then showed the alien font. A chest now answers one click at a time.

Everything else is as in v0.3.1-beta.

A bug-fix release: the mouse pointer is where you point again on the inventory and map screens, and the Android app is called BaK-Again.

You need the original game (sold on GOG). BaK-Again contains nothing from it; on first start it asks for the folder that holds KRONDOR.001.

File Platform
BaK-Again-v0.3.1-beta-windows-x64.zip Windows 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.exe
BaK-Again-v0.3.1-beta-linux-x64.zip Linux 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.x86_64
BaK-Again-v0.3.1-beta.apk Android — install the APK
SHA256SUMS checksums

Fixed

  • The mouse pointer drifted on the inventory and the full map. On the Enhanced inventory and on the full world map (in both modes) the pointer was drawn closer to the top-left than where the mouse really was, and further off the further right and down you went. Clicks on the party portraits missed, and the Exit button looked out of reach behind an invisible border. The pointer now sits exactly where you point. Thanks to everyone who reported it (#3 and on the forum).
  • Android: the app was called "Loading Betrayal at Krondor... please wait." On a phone set to English (or Dutch) the launcher showed the loading message as the app's name. It is BaK-Again again. Installing 0.3.1 over 0.3.0 keeps your saves.

Everything else is as in v0.3.0-beta.

Mods you can install from a Mods screen, shadows and smooth walking in Enhanced mode, town gates and zone borders that work the way the original's do, and combat aiming that matches the original.

You need the original game (sold on GOG). BaK-Again contains nothing from it; on first start it asks for the folder that holds KRONDOR.001.

File Platform
BaK-Again-v0.3.0-beta-windows-x64.zip Windows 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.exe
BaK-Again-v0.3.0-beta-linux-x64.zip Linux 64-bit — unzip, run BaK-Again.x86_64
BaK-Again-v0.3.0-beta.apk Android — install the APK
SHA256SUMS checksums

Highlights

  • Mods. A new Mods screen (Preferences → Enhanced → Installed mods) installs a mod from a zip, switches mods on and off, sets which one wins when two replace the same thing, and uninstalls them. You can also drop a mod's zip into the mods folder and it is installed at the next start. A mod holds pictures, data and translations only, never code. Saves remember which mods were on, and loading a save whose mods are missing asks first. Mod makers get a small bakmod tool to check and pack a mod. How to make one: modding docs.
  • Shadows (Enhanced). A new Shadows setting: Sun casts real shadows from the sun, darkest at noon and following it through the day; Blobs puts a soft shadow under each figure and object; Off is the original look. Sun is the default on a computer, Blobs on a phone.
  • Continuous walking (Enhanced). Hold forward or back and the party glides instead of hopping from step to step. It walks the original's own steps underneath, so a road costs the same game time and the same encounters happen in the same places.
  • Town gates and zone borders behave like the original's. Entering a town now plays the walk up the road on the overhead map, at the original's pace (entering LaMut took far too long before). A gate asks again every time you step on it, as the original does. A zone border's question can no longer be pushed off the screen by a "yawned" message, which could stop you crossing.
  • Combat aiming like the original. The cell a spell or item would hit is outlined in cyan. Spells that need a line of fire need one, Final Rest can be aimed at a body, summoning spells ask where to put the creature, and Escape cancels an aim.

New in Enhanced mode

  • Loot screen: the chest or body sits on the left, next to its window, and the party member's pack on the right, next to the portraits. Both are drawn over squares that show how much room there really is, and a container holding more than its squares grows rows instead of hiding items.
  • The Use and Exit buttons wear the original's faces again; the engraved words were too small to read.
  • The travel screen is laid out again: portraits in the top three quarters of the left edge (clear of a phone's camera hole), the buttons spread evenly over the full height.
  • Sky: the clouds drift with the game clock, so they stand still when time does. A moon in the daytime sky no longer shows as a black disc.
  • Saves: Enhanced lists every save folder. With Enhanced off, Save and Restore list them the way the original does (one folder per number, up to 20).

Android and touch

  • Towns and other locations: while your finger is down, the name of the spot under it shows above the finger, so you can see what you are about to pick; lifting it acts. Sliding onto a spot shows its name too. The way out asks first. The name sits on a light plate, readable over sky, walls and ground.
  • Casting by touch (Enhanced): a tap chooses a spell and Cast casts it, so a fixed-cost spell is no longer cast by accident. A tap anywhere else leaves the power choice. The gems up to the chosen power light red.
  • On a phone, all four movement pads sit together at the bottom left.
  • Holding a movement pad no longer blocks looking around with another finger.
  • Fixed: dropping an item from the examine view onto the ground (spoiled rations, for one) could freeze the inventory, with every button dead.
  • Fixed: holding a finger on a button no longer examines the item behind it.
  • Trees standing on the same spot should no longer flicker between darker and lighter while the view moves.

Faithfulness fixes (now as in the original)

  • Messages that close by themselves do so at every text speed, and stay up as long as the original's. Before, they closed four times too soon at Medium and Fast, and at Slow some waited for a key.
  • Text before tiredness: a wall's or a signpost's text is shown before the step's "yawned" message, not replaced by it.
  • Locations: the screen fades out before a location's picture and description appear, and fades when you leave; changes inside a location cut, as in the original. A conversation's last page stays on screen until the next picture, temple teleports keep their page until the destination temple, and leaving a shop, the inn or a temple's healing returns to the location the way the original does. A keeper or the lute player you talk to steps out of the picture behind the conversation and comes back afterwards. A conversation that starts as you arrive (Ivan Skaald in the Queen's Row Inn) now plays as the scene opens, without the speaker standing in the picture behind it. The ask-about topics go away with their page.
  • Chests: a picked chest turns straight into its loot with no flash of the world in between, and says nothing after the loot. A solved riddle chest goes to black and brings the loot up out of it, with the original's fades (Cheat Central's chest too).
  • Overhead map: LaMut's buildings, and others like them, are drawn on the map, and so is the ground just past a zone's edge, which showed as a flat dark fill.
  • Sounds: a temple's blessing and cure, switching school on the cast screen, and a temple teleport's flight now make the original's sounds. A locator spell sounds only when it works, not on a failure.
  • Turn angle: choosing a wider turn angle, or loading a save made with a narrower one, turns the party to the nearest heading the new angle allows, as the original does.
  • Chapter 4: Gorath's torch starts lit with six hours of light, instead of lit but giving none.
  • Books and cutscenes: the open book fades with its page, and the shop no longer shows the book's binding crease.
  • Cast screen: it opens and closes as a cut, wiping over the travel view; with Enhanced off it shows the runes of running spells on its top rod.
  • Combat:
    • a summoned creature's cell is read as occupied, and no attack or spell can target the creature where the original refuses it;
    • the aim markers for Inspect, items and Black Nimbus;
    • while an item is aimed, the panel, the buttons and the pack behave as in the original, and the buttons do nothing during the pick;
    • Dannon's Delusions takes the caster's stamina when the decoy is placed, not at the cast;
    • a thrust at an enemy that is not next to you walks to a cell beside it instead of taking a strange path;
    • enemies choose and keep their targets as in the original (of two equally near, the first; a target is kept after a short walk);
    • the round reset readies the same combatants as the original.
  • The character sheet fades in once, not twice.

Other fixes

  • A temple cure no longer leaves the party exhausted and drained an hour later. It now counts as a fresh start for time awake, as resting at an inn does.
  • Blessing an item that is already blessed names the item on the priest's page; the name was missing.
  • Opening a character sheet from a shop's pack no longer ends the shop visit. Before, the shelf then handed out items without charging for them.
  • One click turns one page. Before, the click that turned to a narrative's last page could also close it a moment later.
  • An open screen takes every click in the window, so clicks no longer slip through to the combat buttons underneath (an empty corner of the Enhanced pack could pass a party member's turn), or to the travel buttons under a Yes/No question.
  • Save and Restore lists scroll with the mouse wheel, and the scrollbar can be dragged.
  • An inventory grid too small for what a container holds scrolls instead of hiding items.
  • Sprites at the edge of the screen no longer pop in and out while you turn, and their click areas and damage numbers line up with what you see.
  • The bars beside the picture are black again (they showed brown), and the combat pack no longer lingers in them after it closes.
  • Dialogue lines keep their line breaks.
  • The game no longer draws the hidden world behind full-screen menus.
  • Translators: a language pack can move the combat panels' fixed columns.

Known rough edges

  • Shadows are new and still being tuned; if Sun shadows slow your device down, switch to Blobs or Off.
  • Combat on a phone still uses the original's screen with touch buttons.
  • Mods: changes on the Mods screen take effect at the next start; Install from file is on desktop only (on Android, drop the zip into the mods folder); 3D models cannot be replaced by a mod yet.
  • Some fights may still turn out harder than in the original.

Spellcasting on touch, the original's keyboard shortcuts, and a long list of fixes measured against the original.

You need the original game (sold on GOG). BaK-Again contains nothing from it; on first start it asks for the folder that holds KRONDOR.001.

File Platform

Touch (Android)

  • Casting works by finger. Touch a spell symbol to read it, lift to choose it. Then slide along the ring: the cost and damage follow your finger, and lifting casts at that power.
  • In a fight the info box says Choose a target with the spell's name, plus accuracy and damage over an enemy. Cast appears only where the spell would actually land.
  • Move goes exactly to the cell under the cursor, and is offered only where the character can reach this turn.
  • Examine looks at whoever is under the cursor at once.
  • The cursor no longer runs off when a fight starts, and no buttons show while nobody can act.
  • The movement pads work on the overhead map too. Walking into a fight there plays it, and the map comes back afterwards.

Spellcasting

  • The cast screen opens with the original's split wipe, and the power ring sweeps into place before you choose.
  • The ring shows the whole affordable band with its fifths marked.
  • Cast and Shoot do nothing for a character who can't use them, as in the original.
  • Spell colours come from the game's own colour tables.
  • Fixes to Fetters of Rime, Final Rest, Skin of the Dragon, Winds of Eortis and the locator spells.

Keyboard (the original's shortcuts)

  • F opens the full map, 1–3 a member's inventory (Shift for the character sheet), and Ctrl+Q in a fight asks to quit to the main menu.
  • Menu entries answer their own letter keys, as in the original.
  • V on the main menu shows the version.
  • Shortcuts in the quantity picker, cast screen, locator and character sheet.

World and screens

  • The overhead map holds north up and turns the party marker, as the original does with its shipped settings (nonrotatingmap in RESOURCE.CFG). N still toggles it.
  • The full map's marker follows the party and names the town under the pointer.
  • Clicking a roaming group of enemies lets you plan an attack, as in the original.
  • Square pixels throughout: no more stretched text or doubled heights. The horizon, sky colour, terrain colours and night lighting are corrected.
  • Cutscenes and books: every line waits for you, book pages break where the original's do, and chapter endings play their missing parts.
  • In towns and inns, party members speak in front of the scene's own backdrop.
  • Many inventory, shop, camp, inn and character-sheet fixes.
  • The hidden CHEAT CENTRAL menus are in, unlocked the same way the original unlocks them.

Combat

  • Creatures animate at the original's frame rate, and missed blows, poison ticks and shield blocks show their floating numbers as the original does.
  • The combat cast screen no longer shows the travel compass.

Known rough edges

  • The touch buttons are still plain placeholder squares, not the game's own art.
  • The Windows build has been built and packaged but not yet play-tested; Linux and Android have.
