If composer.lock is present but empty an error happens:

  [Seld\JsonLint\ParsingException]                                        
  "./composer.lock" does not contain valid JSON                           
  Parse error on line 1:                                                  
  ^                                                                       
  Expected one of: 'STRING', 'NUMBER', 'NULL', 'TRUE', 'FALSE', '{', '['
