Previews

Description

When creating text, it's important that the user can immediately preview their dialogue. This allows them to experiment with the layout and effects to achieve the desired look and feel. Of course, this means an accompanying implementation is required for these effects, but this is just one step in the process. These previews can be shared, allowing for collaboration before the dialogue reaches the game.

Technical Setup

Previews are run using QTWebEngine and require MSVC to be used as the compiler. While this isn't the QT documentation, it should be noted that this is because QTWebEngine utilizes chromium, which doesn't support the Mingw compiler.

How to install MSVC

MSVC must be installed through Visual Studio. Assuming Visual Studio is installed, you can open the "Visual Studio Installer". With Visual Studio Installer open:

  1. Click modify on Visual Studio Community 2022
  2. Select "Desktop development with C++"
  3. Click "Modify"
  4. Wait for the installer to complete

How to setup project with MSVC

If you already have QT installed, you can setup MSVC by following these steps.

  1. Open QT Maintenance Tool
  2. Login
  3. Add or Remove components
  4. Under the "Qt" section, check Qt 6.6.0a. Specifically MSVC 2019 64-bit. The other options are not required for previews, though they may be required for other aspects of the application.
  5. Update! (It may take a while)
  6. Delete the CMAKE .user files from the project's source directory
  7. Open Qt Creator and open the CMAKE file, which should ask for a configuration
  8. Under the configurations, make sure only MSVC is checked, then click "Configure Project"

And that's all!
