HyperFetch 2.8.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Oct 11:16

New

  • Switching theme, accent colour or font size no longer restarts HyperFetch. The window redraws itself in place, and downloads, torrents and the browser connection carry on. It used to restart the app and every download with it - one from a server that cannot resume started over.
  • The Files tab selects files like a file list. Click, Ctrl+click, Shift+click, Shift+Up/Down and Ctrl+A select rows; Space ticks or unticks them, and right-click offers Check selected, Uncheck selected and Check only selected. A folder's row stands for its files.
  • A renewed list of public trackers. tracker.openbittorrent.com is gone - its domain expired and is parked - and five trackers were added, each on a maintained list of reliable trackers and tested from a real connection.

Fixes

  • Files you tick on a finished torrent are downloaded. They read 100% and never came down. HyperFetch now checks what is already on disk and fetches only the rest.
  • A recheck no longer reads over 100%. A torrent with unticked files showed "65.61 GB / 16.21 GB - 404%": the check reads the whole torrent, and its figures now count the whole torrent.
  • A seeding torrent's Connections tab says when nobody is downloading from you, instead of "Resume the download to see connections".
  • A partly ticked folder in the Files tab shows it, instead of looking unticked.

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 14:38

New

  • A status bar along the bottom of the window. It shows how much you have downloaded and uploaded since HyperFetch was opened, the version, and a sun/moon button that switches between dark and light. HyperFetch restarts to switch theme, and the totals carry over.
  • Fold a folder in the Files tab. Each folder has an arrow that hides what is inside it, or shows it again. A search still finds files inside folded folders, and Select All still includes them.
  • The Connections tab says how much of the torrent each peer has, as in "45% · 1.2 GB". The percent counts only the torrent's own pieces, so a peer with all of them no longer reads 99%.

Fixes

  • Files you untick stay unticked. In 2.8.4, opening the details panel again showed every file ticked, and ticking any box then undid your earlier choices.
  • A file you untick while a torrent is paused is not downloaded when it resumes. The torrent went on with the files it had before.
  • A paused torrent's size and progress change as soon as you untick files, not at its next start.
  • A plain download's bar in the Files tab moves while it downloads. It kept the percent it had when the panel opened. The panel also no longer re-reads a downloading torrent's files from disk twice a second.

Torrents

  • Downloads start in the order of their number. The "#" on each card is the order they start in: a new download goes last, and one you pause and resume goes back to its place instead of the end of the line. Nothing that is running is stopped for a lower number.
  • A magnet no longer restarts about once a second after a stall. Some magnets kept stopping and starting after a stall, and their cards flickered.
  • The Files tab shows a torrent's folders. Each folder has its own row with its size, and one box that ticks or unticks everything in it. Folders come before files, as in Explorer. Sorted by size or progress, the files are listed on their own, each with its folder in its name.
  • Keep only some files without ticking them one by one: search the Files tab, then press Only these.
  • The Files tab's numbers are right. A finished torrent could show its files at old percentages, and "Downloading" above them. Each file's progress is now read once a minute while a torrent runs, and once more when you pause it. The tab's corner counts down to the next read ("Refreshing in 40 s"), or says how old the numbers are ("Updated 5 min ago"). They are saved with the download, so after a restart, even with no internet, the tab shows how far each file had got.
  • A half-downloaded torrent still lists its files after a restart.
  • Seeds read 100% in the Connections tab (they read 99%). Point at the Down or Up column to see what it means: Down is what you get from that peer, which for a seed is its upload to you.
  • UPnP asks every connection your router lists, not only the first. Some routers list one their line does not use first.

Moving and saving

  • A folder for unfinished downloads (Settings → General → "Keep unfinished downloads in"). Downloads are written there while they run, and each moves to its own folder when it finishes. A torrent that seeds is moved, then seeds from its own folder.
  • Move to… works on an unfinished torrent. It takes what has downloaded so far and carries on in the new folder. A running one is paused for the move and goes on by itself. If the new folder already has something with that name, nothing is moved.

The list

  • The bar under the list is centred again after the details panel closes; its labels had been cut short.

HyperFetch 2.8.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Oct 13:54

2.8.2 is withdrawn: it would not start for anyone who had used HyperFetch before ("'DownloadAppV2' object has no attribute '_moves'"). If you installed it, install this one from here — the app cannot update itself while it does not start. 2.8.3 is 2.8.2 with that fixed.

The list

  • The bar under the list shows what your selection needs, and keeps up as downloads change. Running or queued: Pause (queued torrents had no Pause there, only the right-click menu). Paused or failed: Resume. Anything not running: Start now (was "Force"). One finished file: Open. Any one download: Folder. Remove and Clear as before.
  • A click on blank space clears the selection. It did in the list's empty space. On the header, the title or the window's margins it did nothing.
  • Sort by Seeds or Peers. A running torrent sorts by what it sees, a waiting one by what its trackers last said. Unknown counts, and downloads that are not torrents, go last.
  • Seeds before peers everywhere: on the cards, in the sidebar ("Seeds / Peers") and in the web client. A running torrent used to say peers first, a waiting one seeds first.

Moving and saving

  • Move to… shows how far it has got. The card reads "Moving… 1.2 GB / 4.0 GB" with its bar, and the window no longer freezes while a big download moves to another drive. The old files go only once all of them are across; a copy that fails part way is taken back and the originals are left as they were. Resume waits until the move is done.
  • Stream videos are kept as downloaded. 2.8.1 rewrote every finished stream (HLS) video as an MP4. That is now a setting, off unless you switch it on: Settings → Downloads → "Save stream videos as MP4".

New setting

  • Keep the PC awake while downloading (Settings → Downloads, off unless you switch it on). Windows does not go to sleep while a download runs; the screen can still turn off.

The three hyperfetch-*-1.9.1.zip files below are the same browser extension as in 2.8.1; nothing to upload again.

The installer is still unsigned, so SmartScreen's "Windows protected your PC" is expected: More info → Run anyway. 2.8.1 offers this update itself: Update to 2.8.3 in the sidebar.

HyperFetch 2.8.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 17:11

Updates

  • HyperFetch updates itself. It checks GitHub 20 seconds after it starts and once a day after that (Settings → General). When a new version is out, the sidebar shows Update to X. The installer downloads in the app's own list and is checked against the SHA-256 GitHub lists for it. You are asked Install now / Later; nothing installs silently. From this version on, updating is one click.

Torrents

  • A torrent that stalls is tried again by itself. Two kinds of pause used to wait for you to press Resume: aria2 giving up on a quiet swarm after 30 minutes, and the torrent engine restarting under it. In one user's log that was 108 torrents, and none needed the user. Now the torrent goes back in the queue and is tried again after a growing wait. An error that retrying cannot fix, such as a port that will not open, still waits for you.
  • After a restart, torrents start at once. A torrent could sit Paused for five minutes ("Torrent engine unavailable … 10061") when Windows had given the old engine's process number to another program.
  • The same torrent is not added twice. Adding a .torrent that is already in the list now says so, even when the original .torrent was deleted after it was added. Show Existing takes you to it, and Load Trackers adds any trackers the new .torrent or magnet brings.
  • .torrent links from the browser work. A .torrent sent from a web page (the extension's "Add torrent to HyperFetch") used to stop at "the .torrent file is no longer at https://…". The app now fetches it, sending the site's cookies, and says plainly when the site sends a sign-in page instead.
  • A .torrent download can take trackers too. In the Trackers tab or through Load Trackers they go first in the list. Before, only magnets could take them. Private torrents keep to their own trackers.
  • UPnP works with Tailscale or a VPN adapter installed. The search for the router went out of the wrong network adapter, so the torrent port was never opened. The log now says what the router answered. If it refused, switch UPnP on in the router's settings or forward the port by hand. The setting no longer mentions NAT-PMP, which was never there.

Video

  • An HLS video is saved as an ordinary MP4. Players can now skip around in it without freezing (VLC froze for 2–3 seconds after each skip). This needs ffmpeg, which the installer includes.
  • Waiting videos get their real names while they wait, not "download.bin" (Settings → Downloads → "Name videos while they wait").
  • A name you type for a video is kept. It used to go back to the video's title. A typed name is no longer cut at "#" or "?". Renaming a video no longer renames the subtitle files next to it.

Downloads

  • A failed download says what went wrong in words. For example "Part 13 of 292 failed: the server closed the connection" or "The drive is full". The technical details stay in the card's tooltip and the Logs tab.
  • A big download starts at once. The temporary file is no longer filled with zeros first. A 64 GB file used to sit at 0 bytes for 44 seconds.
  • A server that allows only a few connections at a time keeps them all busy, and is no longer down to one.
  • Two copies of HyperFetch no longer delete each other's partial downloads from the temp folder (for example the desktop app and the server). A finished download that loses its temporary file during the final move keeps a whole copy.

The three hyperfetch-*-1.9.1.zip files below are the same browser extension as in 2.8.0; nothing to upload again.

Speed limit

  • Torrents keep to the Download Speed Limit. It used to reach only ordinary downloads; a torrent ran flat out whatever was set. A torrent's own limit (right-click → Set Speed Limit) works now too.
  • One limit for everything. With a torrent and an ordinary download running together, they share it, and an idle torrent holds nothing back from the other. Torrents hold a limit as an average over about ten seconds, so a fast swarm arrives in bursts.
  • Any value. Both speed limit boxes in Settings → Downloads take a typed number ("25", "2.5 Mb/s", "500 Kb/s") as well as the list.

Video

  • A video shows its real title, and goes to its folder, as soon as it starts. A pasted video page used to sit in the list as "download.bin" until it finished, and was moved out of Other afterwards. It is now named and filed into Video or Music before the first byte. One still waiting for its turn keeps the placeholder until it starts.

Under the hood

  • Python's garbage collector now runs on the window's own thread only. It could tear a window object down from a download or torrent thread.
  • About the Defender warning on 2.7.1. Microsoft Defender quarantined 2.7.1 on at least one PC as Trojan:Win32/Bearfoos.A!ml, a machine-learning guess rather than a match with known malware. The file was checked: byte for byte the build GitHub made from the tagged source, with the same tools as 2.7.0, and clean when scanned, installed and run on a fresh Windows machine with Defender fully on. From this release the app and its installer carry their name, publisher and version, the build tools are pinned, and every release is scanned with Defender before it is published. The installer is still unsigned, so SmartScreen's "Windows protected your PC" is expected: More info → Run anyway.
  • The program is listed as "HyperFetch" under Installed apps, with the version in its own column.

The three hyperfetch-*-1.9.1.zip files below are the same browser extension as in 2.7.0; nothing to upload again.

Fixed: Force Recheck on torrents

  • A seeding torrent comes back Completed. Force Recheck used to move it to Paused while it rechecked and leave it there when the check passed; Resume then moved it to Active for good, and each attempt kept a download slot. It now shows as Active with the recheck counting up, and returns to Completed (and Seeding, if seeding is on) when the check passes.
  • A recheck runs to the end. It is no longer marked Completed the moment it starts, cut short when seeding is off, or given up as "no peers" when it takes longer than three minutes.
  • Resume or Force Download right after a pause no longer starts a second run beside the one that is still stopping.

If torrents are stuck from an earlier Force Recheck, they sort themselves out when HyperFetch starts after this update.

The three hyperfetch-*-1.9.1.zip files below are the same browser extension as in 2.7.0; nothing to upload again.

Fetch everything. Download faster.

Video

  • Video pages from any site yt-dlp knows. Paste the page's link and HyperFetch finds the video on it. Before, only YouTube and a short list of sites were sent to yt-dlp; anything else ended with "Server sent a web page".
  • Videos come down over parallel connections. When a site serves the video as one plain file, HyperFetch now fetches it in ranges, like any other file. Measured on one site, the same 66.8 MB video three times each way: 62 Mbit/s, where a single connection gave 6. Speed limits apply to these downloads too. YouTube-style separate video and audio, HLS and DASH are fetched as before.
  • A live stream says so. A link to a live stream now ends with Live stream: it has no end, so there is no finished video instead of saving the few seconds on offer as "Completed".

Getting through

  • Sites your provider blocks. Downloads from them get through, as a browser's do. Settings → Network → Get past provider blocks is on by default.

Torrents

  • A smarter queue. A running torrent with no seeders gives its slot to a waiting one that has them, and waiting torrents are checked with their trackers every 15 minutes (Settings → Torrents → Check seeders of queued torrents).
  • Filed before they start. A torrent goes into Video, Music and the rest by its biggest file, before anything is written, instead of being moved after it finishes.
  • Private torrents are no longer announced to public trackers.
  • Trackers added to a torrent already in the list are really used; a queued multi-file torrent shows its own name; a torrent is listed under the category it is filed in.

Everyday

  • What cannot be classified goes to an Other folder instead of piling up in the download folder.
  • A Windows notification when downloads are added while HyperFetch is not in front (Settings → Downloads → Notify when a download is added).

Browser extension 1.9.1 (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

  • The video badge sends the video its player is playing. It used to send the newest stream in the tab, which on pages with adverts was often an ad network's live stream, a thumbnail's preview clip or a pre-roll advert.
  • New installs in Chrome and Edge pair with the app on their own again. This needs HyperFetch 2.7.0.
  • The welcome page and the popup show the HyperFetch logo.
  • Firefox: the add-on is now on addons.mozilla.org. The app and the site send each browser to its own store.

The three hyperfetch-*-1.9.1.zip files below are for uploading to the stores; install the extension from your browser's store.

  • Firefox pairs without pasting a token. When the HyperFetch extension in Firefox asks to connect, HyperFetch shows Pair Firefox with HyperFetch? with the code the extension shows. Check that they match and click Allow, once. Settings → Browser → Paired Firefox browsers can forget them.
  • Browser extension 1.9.0 for Chrome, Edge and Firefox:
    • The video quality menu no longer closes while you move the mouse to it.
    • Firefox: downloads started in a Container tab use that container's logins.
    • New: the Firefox package, hyperfetch-firefox-1.9.0.zip. This is the file to upload to addons.mozilla.org, which signs it; Firefox installs only signed add-ons.

  • Quit from the tray now ends HyperFetch. Before, it closed the window and the tray icon but left HyperFetch.exe running in Task Manager, so you had to end it there by hand.
