The Board steps through days

  • The chores Board now has the Week view's arrows, around a Today button. Step back to see each person's day as it went: what was done and by whom, what was missed, carried over, or excused. A parent can excuse a miss right there. Step ahead to see what's planned for each person on a day to come; checking off stays on Today.
  • An untouched board comes back to today by itself after two minutes, so a kitchen screen never sits on another day.

Weekly chores right away, and more birds

  • A weekly chore with no set days now counts in the week it's added, due when the week ends. Before, one added partway through a week (a new chore, an imported plan, someone added to it, or chores just turned on) waited for the next week and showed nowhere until then. A week's or month's any-time repeating chore works the same way.
  • In Chores, the Week view's This week button works again after you move to another week, switch views, and come back.
  • Paper birds now cross the screensaver's sky every minute or two by day, instead of every few minutes. About one flock in three flies close: bigger, lower, in front of the mountains, and quicker across, the way birds near you look. They still fly only by day in dry weather, and not at all with Motion set to Reduced.

The clock lands gently in every corner

  • When the screensaver comes in, the clock drops in with a small bounce. In a bottom corner the bounce was about three times bigger and carried the clock off the bottom of the screen before it sprang back up. It now bounces the same small amount in every corner, and the top corners look exactly as before.

A screen that was dark stays dark after a reload

  • When a shared screen's page reloads while the screensaver has it dark (a nightly reload, a crash, or an update), it now comes back dark and keeps the Screen off. Before, a page reloaded after an update could miss that the screen had been quiet and light it up again.
  • A page coming back into view while its panel is powered off no longer counts as someone looking at it, so it stays dark.
  • Motion or a touch still brings it back as before.

New land each time

The screensaver's mountains change every time it comes on. The two snowy ranges come from a set of chosen shapes, and the hills and their trees are drawn at random by the same rules, with the tallest peak always where the sun rises. They look the same on every screen size, from a phone to a 4K wall screen. New land brings new clouds too.

A sky that wakes like a phone

  • It rests. Once the screensaver comes on, the sky rests a little dimmer.
  • Walking up brightens it. With a Motion sensor picked for the screen, the sky brightens when someone walks up and stays the screensaver; only a touch or a key opens PlanaVista, and that touch presses nothing underneath.
  • Dark after. A new setting under Shared screens: 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes, or Never (10 to start). The sky fades to black, a Screen picked for that screen turns off, and nothing on the page keeps moving. It stays dark until someone walks up or touches the screen.
  • Coming back from dark eases up slowly enough for a monitor that takes a few seconds to show a picture, and nothing is pressed while that monitor is still black.
  • Night works the same way at the night level.
  • An iPad unlocked, or a page coming back into view, lights the sky.

What changed from 0.12.0

The Screen picked for a shared screen is no longer dimmed to 40% by day or turned off as soon as the screensaver shows at night. The resting sky does the dimming now, and the Screen turns off when the sky goes dark, day or night. With Dark after set to Never, the Screen stays on.

Fixes

  • Weather icons read on any header: clouds, the moon, fog, and wind are drawn in the color of the words around them, and clear night's moon is a crescent (it had drawn as a thin sliver).
  • A Home Assistant restart, or a motion sensor dropping out for a moment, no longer wakes a dark screen or brightens a resting one.
  • A settings change made on another device no longer lights a dark screen.

The living sky

The screensaver on shared family screens comes alive.

  • An entrance. The sky fades in over the card, the mountains rise far to near, the sun or moon swings up from behind the peaks, clouds slide in, the clock drops in with a bounce, and the Today card swings on its pegs. A rainbow that's already out comes last.
  • Calm days have life. The sun's rays turn slowly and it breathes, small clouds drift, the mountains sway, paper birds cross now and then by day, and a shooting star crosses at night.
  • Weather. Wind races the clouds in gusts. For a while after rain, by day, a paper rainbow stands across from the sun.
  • Seasons. The trees on the hills turn with the seasons, set by your home's latitude, and stand bare under snow in winter. Fireflies glow on dry summer evenings.
  • The moon is drawn as it really is tonight, from new to full.
  • Waking. A touch or a key wakes it with a quick fade and presses nothing underneath.
  • Try it. In Settings, see the screensaver at another time of day, in other weather, or in another season, without saving anything.

Dimming

Most wall screens can't dim themselves, so on shared family screens PlanaVista now draws its own colors darker.

  • Pick Brightness by day (100%, 85%, or 70%) and Brightness at night (100%, 50%, 30%, 15%, or 8%).
  • Half an hour before night begins, the screen fades slowly down to the night level and turns a little warmer, like a lamp. In the morning it comes back up over 10 minutes.
  • Words stay readable at every level. Each keeps its contrast with what it sits on. Light looks go no darker than a quarter, so their dark words can keep theirs.
  • Everything dims together: people's colors, pictures, emoji, weather icons, and Home Assistant's own top bar and sidebar.
  • Tap a level in Settings to see it on that screen for a few seconds.

Settings

  • Shared screens has its own page: This screen, Night, Kiosk mode, the screensaver with each screen's Screen and Motion, Try it, and Dimming.
  • Every setting has a ? beside its name. Tap it for a short explainer, right under the setting, of what it's for and how it works.

Fixes

  • A night set to start at or just after midnight fades in before it.
  • A night set brighter than the day keeps the day's level.
  • A shared screen no longer flashes to full brightness when its card is rebuilt at night.
  • Fields in Settings keep their names for screen readers, and tapping a name focuses its field.
  • On a phone, explainers in a person's Chores settings sit below their rows.
  • Rows of choices on Shared screens scroll within themselves on narrow screens.
  • Show it now and Try it keep parent mode while a parent is looking.

The screensaver

  • It can come on after a minute. Settings offers 1, 2, 5, 10, and 30 minutes, which fit a phone in one row; a household that chose 15 minutes keeps it.
  • A Home Assistant restart no longer starts its wait over. A motion sensor comes back reading no motion with a fresh time, and that used to count as motion just ending.
  • Lightning always comes out of a cloud: each bolt starts at the base of a cloud on screen, a storm's tall cloud first, and with no cloud in view it waits.

The screensaver, on every screen

  • The clock and the words are drawn in PlanaVista's own rounded face everywhere. A screen without that font installed, such as a Raspberry Pi, used to show the system font, and the screensaver now loads the face itself, on Home Assistant's own pages too.
  • The clock and the date stay readable as a white paper cloud drifts behind them.
  • Each ring on the Today card names its person, so two people with the same initial aren't confused.

PlanaVista's own dashboard

Adding PlanaVista now puts PlanaVista in Home Assistant's sidebar at once, with a dashboard of its own: one full-screen card where setup opens by itself for an admin. There's no dashboard, view, or card to make by hand. It is a real dashboard, so you can edit it and add views, and kiosk mode works there.

  • Settings, under About: Show PlanaVista in the sidebar (admins). Off removes only the sidebar entry. The dashboard stays at its address, so a screen showing it keeps it, with your changes.
  • Installs from before keep what they have and can add it from the same switch.
  • Removing PlanaVista removes its dashboard.

The screensaver

When nobody has touched a shared family screen for a while (2 to 30 minutes), PlanaVista shows a living sky: paper mountains lit by the real sun and the weather, with the time, the date, today's next events, and a ring for each person's chores. Turn it on in Settings, under PINs and parent mode, in Shared screens. It runs on shared screens only, never on personal phones.

  • A touch or a key wakes it and presses nothing beneath it.
  • At night (from the latest bedtime to the earliest wake-up in Sleep times, or times you set) the sky goes dark and only the time shows.
  • Each shared screen can pick a Screen entity, such as the screen's own backlight, plug, or a number that sets its brightness. By day it is dimmed while the screensaver shows; at night it is turned off or all the way down; in the morning and on a touch it comes back as it was. That holds even if the page reloads, and an entity that's unavailable is put back once it returns.
  • A Motion sensor keeps the screen awake while someone is in front of it, and wakes it.
  • Show it now previews it from Settings.
  • It sits above everything, Home Assistant's own dialogs included, and follows PlanaVista's Motion setting.

Faster on small computers

Switching to the Chores board, and between its views, is much quicker on slow devices such as a Raspberry Pi: the rings and the bar no longer make the browser recalculate the page as they draw.

Also

  • A night with its own times can't start when it ends.
  • Household settings check everything before changing anything.

The goal surprise

When a child's stars reach their goal, a wrapped present waits on their screen. It wiggles now and then while it waits, and a hold opens it into a full-screen reveal of the reward. It opens once, even with several screens, and Watch it again plays it back. Parents get a notification, and Home Assistant gets a goal_reached event.

24 standard colors

People and the theme can pick from 24 standard colors, pink included. The earlier colors still work.

Fixes

Thirteen rounds of review, each one trying to break what the round before had fixed:

  • To approve: answers stay where they were tapped, a double tap never presses what slides under the finger, Approve all names the rows it approves, late check-offs say they count as missed, and Done stays in reach on short and sideways screens.
  • Records after the day is over: sending a check-off back late, excusing a missed chore, an allowed skip, an away day, a chore given more time, and a chore finished early now change exactly the days that counted them, so rings, weeks, streaks, and minutes agree.
  • Rules that change: changing the week's first day or the missed rule more than once keeps earlier weeks as they were.
  • Skips: a skip this week covers every copy that week, and every skip says what it covers.
  • Deleted chores: past days keep their name and picture, and a new chore never takes an old one's records.
  • The keypad: a child's double or triple tap never types a digit.
  • The keyboard: Tab reaches every control in a sheet, date fields included, and Settings keeps focus inside it.
