Skein Downloader 0.7 speaks your language. Skein is a native download manager for files and video on Windows and Linux.

Work in progress. Skein is under active development. Expect rough edges, missing features, and changes between releases.

New in 0.7: interface languages

  • 13 languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, German, Vietnamese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi.
  • Follows your system language by default, falling back to English. To choose another, use the flag button in the toolbar; the new language applies the next time Skein starts.
  • Translated Windows installer: Setup follows the Windows display language too, including its download page, progress and error messages.
  • The translations are a first version. Corrections from native speakers are welcome on the issue tracker.
  • Also fixed: the Windows installer's task check boxes are no longer cut off at high DPI.

What it does

  • Files and video in one place: direct links, supported file hosts, and video downloads through yt-dlp.
  • Multiple connections: download a file using multiple connections, with up to four downloads running at once.
  • A manageable queue: pause and resume, retry failed downloads, search downloads, and keep saved history.
  • Pick the files you want: browse Internet Archive collections, GitHub and GitLab releases, and Hugging Face repositories before adding downloads.
  • Native light and dark themes: follow the system theme or choose your own.

  • Windows installer: not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn before it runs.
  • Windows portable: install the video tools from Install / repair tools in the video window on first use.
  • Flatpak: flatpak install --user ./SkeinDownloader-0.7-linux-x86_64.flatpak, then flatpak run io.github.tcottrill.SkeinDownloader//preview.
  • AppImage: chmod +x SkeinDownloader-0.7-linux-x86_64.AppImage and run it; without FUSE 2 (libfuse2) add --appimage-extract-and-run.

The source and licenses of the video tools bundled in the Linux packages are attached below.
