Use regex replace_all rather than custom loop

This change resolves issues #4 and #6 and was contributed by @davidbeesley and @claude.

This also avoids the issue with quadratic performance discussed in #4

This release is also significant because it means the implementation is beginning to diverge from the upstream Python code.
