See a note's neighborhood on the graph
- Selecting a note highlights its connections. Edges touching the
selected note are drawn twice as wide, the next ring of connections a bit
wider than usual and the third ring slightly wider, and they sit above
the other edges. Every other edge and its label fades back, so you can
follow what a note connects to at a glance. The change animates in a
quarter of a second, and on a 5,000-note graph a selection costs about
2 ms, as before.
The Feed reads by depth
- The current card stands out. Cards fade by how far they sit from the
card you're reading: the next ones to 70%, then 55%, then 40%. The fade
follows the focus as you scroll, and it animates. On the Engram Purple
theme, cards two or more notes away also get a light blur; the IDE
themes only fade. - A selection outline travels with you. The current card carries the
same outline as a selected card on the graph, and it glides from card to
card as you scroll. - Feed cards are solid, the same color as cards on the graph. The
frosted glass stays on the floating toolbar and action bar.
Big graphs stay smooth everywhere
We ran a scripted session on a 5,000-note test graph at 1920×1080 on a
Retina screen: zooming from the whole graph to 100% in four steps, with
clicks, drags, scrolling and minimap jumps at each step. Every step now
holds 60 frames per second with no pauses. Fixed along the way:
- No freeze after jumping around with the minimap. Minimap jumps at
low zoom filled the canvas's card image memory with small pictures.
Zoomed in to 100% afterwards, cards kept swapping each other out every
frame: 8 to 12 frames per second, blurry cards, until you reloaded the
pane. - Minimap jumps are smooth. While the view moves fast, cards that come
into view are drawn at half resolution and sharpen as soon as it slows.
Uploading full-size card pictures made each jump stutter. - Dragging no longer stalls. Every drag made the canvas measure all
of its cards again at the start and at the end, about 150 ms each on a
big graph, with cards briefly redrawn at half resolution. - Dragging a card is smooth on big graphs. Each mouse move used to look
up every edge's color and style one by one. - The first click no longer freezes the canvas. Opening a note's
details loads a bold font for its title, and the canvas re-measured
every card when any font loaded, about 200 ms on a big graph. It now
only does so for fonts its cards use.
Smaller fixes
- A new connection no longer rearranges the graph. Connecting two cards
re-ran the layout, and the result landed a moment later, often while you
were dragging one of them. Cards now stay where they are until you switch
layout, or notes are added or removed; the next layout includes the new
connections. - Connection dots stay put when a card lifts. A hovered card rises a
few pixels; its connection dots now stay where the edges end. - In the IDE Light theme, a hovered card stays white and just lifts.
It used to turn gray.
