Comparison with Shopify's?

That one pop-ed up after my version and is much larger in size, can't tell which one is better or how they compare, it might depend on your use case.

It also uses ResizeObserver which I haven't fully understood the need for yet (sounds bad if it's not necessary for my use case)

I see now - yours avoids the need for that by creating new intersection observers repeatedly (I think?). That sounds promising.

Have you tested the performance of this? I'd be tracking a couple hundred items within the viewport.

I wonder if using ResizeObserver to gate animation frame checks would improve performance (if performance is an issue)

At the time of developing mine I compared it with scroll + resize events (demo) and it goes fine, essentially the idea is to have something to update dropdown/tooltip positions when shown, but now comparing it with Shopify's version I don't know how they compare, to me that's too complex to consider a broader use case.
