This assumes you already have your search server, index and search page created. The drupal.org module page for search_api_attachments has no documentation, but the readme.txt file at the root of the module provides a good example. Here it is in a nutshell.
Once you've enabled the search_api_atachments module, go to admin/config/search/search_api_attachments and configure the Tika extractor. Pantheon has a doc for that.
The next step is to go to the ‘processors’ tab of the index and enable the “File attachments” processor.
Next, then go back to the fields tab, click the “Add fields” button and in the general section you will now see a new field to select: “Search api attachments: File” which will indicate which of your file fields it will search. Add whichever one(s) you want searched.
After you add the field, be sure to set it’s type to “Fulltext”. Then delete any content already indexed and re-index.
