System Guided install Portable (no install)
Windows (x86_64) crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-windows-x86_64-installer.exe crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-windows-x86_64-portable.zip
macOS (Apple Silicon) crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-macos-arm64-installer.dmg crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-macos-arm64-portable.zip
Linux (x86_64) crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-linux-x86_64.AppImage (single file, nothing to install) crackattack-2.0.0-beta.3-linux-x86_64-portable.tar.gz

The Windows installer needs no administrator rights; the macOS disk image holds the
app, to drag into Applications; the AppImage runs as is (make it executable first).
Archives: unpack anywhere and run. Your settings and scores are kept in your user folder.

macOS: the application is not signed by Apple, so macOS blocks it the first time:

  • macOS 15 or later: open Crack Attack.app once, then go to System Settings →
    Privacy & Security
    and click Open Anyway;
  • macOS 14 or earlier: right-click (or Control-click) Crack Attack.app, choose
    Open, then confirm;
  • or, from a terminal (adjust the path if the app is elsewhere):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Crack Attack.app"

Changes

Third beta of Crack Attack! — Back From The Stack.

  • Computer opponent on the grid: play against the computer in three levels (Easy,
Medium, Hard), with a small preview of the opponent's board.
  • New menu graphics.
  • Network play: this version is not compatible with beta 2 (network protocol 4).
The LAN list now shows players running another version greyed out as incompatible
    network version
, and a failed connection says whose version of the game is older.
  • Updates screen: redesigned, with a single button to download the new version and an
    Automatic checks option.
  • Downloads: the files are now named -installer (macOS disk image, Windows installer,
Linux AppImage) and -portable (plain archives).
  • Terminal version: the text version (crackattack-terminal, built from source) is
redone: smooth movement, pause, danger bars and a summary at the end.

Packages installed from beta 2 keep their settings, scores and ranking.

Changes

Second beta of Crack Attack! — Back From The Stack.

  • Installers: the macOS disk image (drag the app into Applications), the Windows
installer and the Linux AppImage are now part of the release, next to the plain archives.
  • Network play: the game port now stays the same from one game to the next on macOS and
Linux, so the address saved in your ranking stays valid for Quick reconnect.
  • Translations: the rules now state the seven-second delay before a lost game, the
ranking's "just now" label now says "less than an hour ago", and many wording fixes in
English, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Turkish.
Please keep reporting anything that reads wrong.

Packages installed from beta 1 keep their settings, scores and ranking.

Changes

First public beta of Crack Attack! — Back From The Stack, a Rust rewrite of the
classic Crack Attack! (Daniel R. Nelson, 2000–2006) with a WebGPU renderer and SDL3.
The gameplay follows the original 1.1.14; everything around it is new.

  • Modes: solo, versus the computer (three difficulty levels), and versus another player
on your local network, found automatically or by address, with a network ranking.
  • New look: redrawn logo, countdown and messages, new garbage textures, a window that
    adapts to any size.
  • New sound: all-new sound effects, and music based on the song "Les Crapauds"
(1897). During a game the music follows the pressure on your stack: it grows more
intense as the stack climbs and settles when you recover.
  • Controls: keyboard and gamepad everywhere, fully navigable menus, rebindable keys.
  • Languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Simplified
Chinese, Japanese and Korean. All but English and French are new: please report anything that
    reads wrong.
  • Updates: a daily check tells you when a newer version is published (it can be turned
    off in About → Updates).
