Checkers Game with AI (CheckersAI)

Welcome to the CheckersAI project Wiki, a checkers game with a powerful artificial intelligence (AI). In this documentation, we will explain the rules of the checkers game and how the AI has been implemented.

Checkers Game Rules

Checkers is a classic two-player board game. Here are the basic rules:

  • The game is played on an 10x10 board.
  • Each player starts with 20 pieces on the black squares of their closest row.
  • Pieces can move diagonally forward but can only move one square at a time.
  • Mandatory capture rule: If a piece can capture another piece, it is obligated to do so, even if it results in being captured in return or if it requires moving backward.
  • Capture as many pieces as possible when faced with multiple capture options
  • When a piece reaches the opponent's farthest row, it becomes a queen and can move diagonally in all directions.
  • The goal of the game is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or block them so they can't make any legal moves.

How the AI Works

Our AI is based on the Minimax algorithm with Alpha-Beta pruning, allowing it to make strategic decisions when playing against human players. Here's how the AI works:

  • The AI evaluates the current state of the game using an evaluation function that considers factors like piece positions, mobility, the presence of queens, and more.
  • It explores the game tree by predicting possible moves for each player over multiple levels of depth.
  • The Minimax algorithm enables the AI to choose the move that maximizes its own score while minimizing the opponent's score.
  • Alpha-Beta pruning helps skip branches of the tree that are not promising, speeding up the search.

With this combination of algorithms, our AI can make intelligent decisions and provide an exciting challenge to players.
