Background to the DPS

The BDLSS DPS (Bodleian Digital Libraries Systems and Services - Digital Preservation Service) is intended to be a broad system providing digital preservation support across the department (i.e. BDLSS). It will be based on a series of OCFL storage roots, with digital preservation activities performed by the Digital Preservation Microservices system. In order to get objects into and out of the OCFL storage roots, we will need an API/Application layer to interface with the various systems in use across the department.

The DPS will sit on its own servers and storage roots, and all interaction with the system will be via the API/Application layer. This API/Application layer will have to be content and business-logic agnostic, so as to provide the same core service across multiple systems, each of this will have their own data structures, application logic, and business logic. The first platform to be connected to the DPS will be the ORA system (Oxford Research Archive).

Evaluating Fedora 6 as an API/Application layer for the DPS

We have not selected an API/Application layer. It seem reasonable, however, to explore whether or not Fedora 6 will provide a suitable solution.

The first tranche of work, for November 2022 is to find out if Fedora 6 will work as an application/API layer for our proposed OCFL DPS store. We want to set up a Fedora 6 instance, using whatever the latest production release is, test if it will meet our behavioural requirements, and then test if it will perform under system load.

  • Create Fedora6 server: [TASK BLOCKED BY INFRASTRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS]
  • Create and perform a set of behavioural tests: #2 and #3
  • Create a set of performance tests: #1 and #3
