v0.2.2: 0.2.2
NOLF2 VR 0.2.2
-Either trigger picks a conversation answer. The free hand’s trigger, the one you use things with, now chooses answers too, as well as the gun hand’s trigger and A.
-Adjust your free hand. While adjusting the gun (turn on Options > VR > Adjust with stick click, then click the left stick), press the left trigger to switch to your free hand. Press it again to go back to the gun.
--Left stick slides it.
--Right stick turns and tilts it.
--Right grip + right stick up/down raises it.
--A / B rolls it.
Click the left stick to save. It’s one fit for all weapons, and works in left-handed mode too.
Upgrading: unzip over your existing VR folder. Your settings, gun fits and saves are kept.
NOLF2 VR 0.2.1: hotfix
-In conversations, the answer you have highlighted is now red instead of dark blue so it’s easy to see in the headset.
Upgrading: unzip over your existing VR folder. Your settings, gun fits and saves are kept.
NOLF2 VR 0.2.0 - QOL UPDATE -
NOLF2 VR 0.2.0: the QOL update
Changes
-Adjusting is now a setting. Clicking the left stick to adjust the gun, scope, magazine grip or snowmobile hands is now off by default, so stray clicks don’t throw you into it. Turn it on in Options > VR > Adjust with stick click.
-Fixed: adjust mode couldn’t be closed. Clicking the left stick again now saves and exits. Before, you had to open the menu to get out.
-The ammo chooser is on the gun. Choosing ammo now shows the list on your gun, in place of the ammo readout, instead of at the top of your view.
-Faster frames. The game no longer draws a separate copy of the world for the desktop window, which used to cost about as much as a third eye.
-New page: Options > VR performance
-Desktop mirror on/off: off leaves the monitor black, which saves a little more.
-Render resolution, 50-100%: lower it if your frame rate drops. 70% draws about half the pixels.
-Performance log. Every 10 seconds of play, xrbridge.log records your frame rate and timings, and any stutters with a breakdown of where the time went. If you report performance problems, please attach it. Check VR.bat logs the same way, without the game running.
-Skill points cheat fixed. Options > Cheats > Skill points now gives 1,000 points each press. Before, it gave nothing on the first mission.
-Removed the duplicate “all weapons” option from the VR settings page; it’s on the Cheats page.
Upgrading from 0.1.0
Unzip over your existing VR folder. Your settings, gun fits and saves are kept.
NOLF2 VR 0.1.0 — First public release
The first public release of NOLF2 VR, a source-level VR conversion of No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way. Full 6DoF, motion controls, the gun in your hand. No head-aiming.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11 and a PC VR headset with an OpenXR runtime (Virtual Desktop, SteamVR or Meta Quest Link). Tested on Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop.
- Your own copy of No One Lives Forever 2, patched to 1.3. Built on the English (UK) CD release with the official 1.3 patch; any retail copy updated to 1.3 should work. Copies are available from My Abandonware.
No game files are included.
Installing
- Download NOLF2-VR-0.1.0.zip below and unzip it. You get a folder called
VR. - Put the
VRfolder inside your NOLF2 folder, next toGAME.REZ. - Start your VR runtime and put the headset on.
- Double-click Play NOLF2 VR.bat in the
VRfolder.
Nothing else to install. Your normal NOLF2 isn't changed; VR keeps its own settings and saves in the VR folder.
Once in game, stand (or sit) as you'll play and hold both stick clicks for a second to set your height. Settings are in Options > VR.
(some controls may conflict with clicking sticks, if you get stuck in an adjustment mode backing out to the menu will fix it)
Features
- Stereo 3D with 6DoF head tracking, true world scale, standing or seated play, and crouching for real
- Motion-controlled guns: aim where the gun points, with every weapon's fit tuned (adjustable in the headset)
- Gloved hands with finger tracking, and a two-handed grip for steadier aim
- Reload by hand: drop the magazine, grab a fresh one from over your shoulder, slot it in, rack the slide
- Throw grenades, bananas and coins by hand; swing swords to hit; raise scopes to your eye
- Weapon ring, health on your wrist like a watch, ammo on the gun, and the HUD on a floating panel
- Drive the snowmobile with both hands on the handlebars; turn freely on scripted rides
- Cutscenes in 3D around you or on a flat screen
- Smooth or snap turning, a comfort vignette, left-handed mode and a choice of walking stick
- A cheats page with level select
- All weapon aims can be adjusted by clicking the left stick in and using instructions shown in the top left. This adjustment also works for scope placement, magazine location/rotation, and snowmobile handlebar location.
Known issues
- In 3D cutscenes you can sometimes see things the original camera hid (characters' idle poses off-screen and so on). Switch to the flat screen in Options > VR > Cutscenes if it bothers you.
- The Tommy gun occasionally draws long tracer streaks.
- In left-handed mode, the help text in the gun-adjust mode still names the right-handed buttons.
- The snowmobile has double handle bars, I'll fix this soon. Still wip on the cockpit view for this.
Problems?
Run Check VR.bat to test your headset connection without the game. When reporting a bug, please attach the logs from the VR folder: vr_game.log, xrbridge.log, and any crash_*.txt / crash_*.dmp.
