Release list
AURORA 0.7.7
Epic film sounds for the M-VAVE FM-1: the horns arrive, the keys play with their own velocity and pressure, and the
delay follows the clock. Everything since 0.6.0.
METAL. A new page under EDIT, after TONE 2: a ring modulator on the pad and its sub. RING is how much, RATIO the
second sine's pitch as a multiple of the note, 0.5 to 8. Whole numbers stay in tune and thicken; the places between
are bells, gongs and metal. The page draws where every overtone goes. On HOME the fourth knob is now METAL, in place
of MOVE, so the clang is under a hand while playing; MOVE keeps its own page.
Four horns. BRAAM, FOGHORN, WARHORN and TITAN follow PLUCK as presets 20 to 23: the film-trailer horn built on
RING, with a sub, a drive, a slow attack and BLOOM opening it. Play them one note at a time, low, and lean on the
key. Twenty-four presets now; the USER slots are program changes 24 to 39.
The keys. They sense their own velocity and pressure: a strike is VELO, a lean is SWELL on that note, and both go
out over MIDI as velocity and polyphonic aftertouch. KEYS on the MIDI page turns the sensing off if a key misbehaves.
SYNC. Under a MIDI clock the delay's TIME becomes a note division, 1/32 to 1/2, following the tempo; the DELAY
page shows the division. Without a clock it is a time, as before.
Sending a sound. SAVE, then GLO sends the current sound over USB MIDI as one SysEx message. The site's share page
catches it and turns it into text: every control's value, to keep, to paste, or to send in as a preset with one click.
Fixed. Scene B's edits are kept across a power-off. Until now B was rebuilt from its preset at power-on, so a
sound built at B was lost unless it had been saved to a USER slot from B (the knobs edit the scene you are at; the
manual now says so). Settings from earlier versions carry over. VOLUME is applied after DRIVE, so on a driven sound it is a level and not less grit. The manual says
MASTER is the output volume (the FM-1 has one) and lists USB audio recording.
Note. The sound's data grew, so the sixteen USER slots are cleared by this update. Save them again afterwards.
Installing. From the site's install page in Chrome or Edge over USB, or from the FM-1 Firmware Hub. At your own
risk; OCT- held at power-on is the USB rescue, and any other firmware installs over AURORA the same way. The package
identity is FM-1_4747 (it was FM-1_960, which another firmware already had). The manual is on the site, with three recordings of the firmware on the front page.

AURORA 0.7.4
AURORA
Epic film sounds for the M-VAVE FM-1: vast skies, trailer horns, glass and bells, big wide sounds that keep moving on their own and bend to MIDI. A sound module for a dawless rig, built for playing rather than sequencing.
- The pad: eight voices of twelve sine partials with an ADSR envelope and velocity (VELO sets how much), a glide, and
on TONE 2 a STRETCH of the partials from string to bell, a SUB an octave under, a TUNE of +-12 and a DRIVE; on METAL a
ring modulator (RING, RATIO x the pitch from 0.5 to 8) that splits every partial into its sum and difference tones. TILT sets how fast the partials fall off, SPREAD balances odd
against even from hollow to full, BRIGHT is a ceiling they fade under, BLOOM staggers their entry, DETUNE spreads
each low partial into a pair so the pad shimmers and a chord's beats are smeared rather than bare. - The swarm: under the pad, five saws a little apart (SPREAD) through a low-pass (CUTOFF, RESO) that tracks the
note and follows TILT, the movement's colour and pressure; each saw wanders by DRIFT. LEVEL brings it in. - The air: noise shaped. Wind against crackle (TEXTURE) through a resonant band-pass a side (TONE, wandering at
RATE, bent by the movement's colour), swelling in with the pad and lingering after it, and breathing in and out on its own at the
pace BREATH sets; AIR, also the macro, sets how much. - Movement: four slow sources, WANDER (a random LFO in every voice), WALK (a random walk), CHAOS (a Lorenz
attractor) and TIDE (a slow sine over bars of the MIDI clock), into TILT, COLOUR, PITCH and SPACE through a fixed
pattern; MOVE scales it all, RATE its speed, and DRIFT walks every partial besides. - Width: odd partials lean left, even right (WIDTH); mono-safe.
- Space: a Dattorro plate with a shimmer at any interval, a tape delay (under a MIDI clock, TIME is a note division, 1/32 to 1/2), and a master FILTER the
Circuit Tracks' way: one knob, centre off, left a high-pass sweeping up, right a low-pass sweeping down (CC 74). - Freeze: FREEZE holds the delay line and plays a cloud of grains off it (GRAIN their length, SPRAY how far back
they pick, SHIFT their pitch, an octave either way), on into the plate: the texture stays after the
hands have left. Half way it smears away over a minute, at the top it holds for ever. - The screen: every page is a graphic the four knobs shift, each part drawn in the colour of the knob that
moves it (EDIT, ENV, LFO and FX step through their groups): TONE is the spectrum, TONE 2 the partials' places, SHAPE the ADSR, TOUCH the bloom, swell and velocity, SWARM the saws under their filter, AIR the wind, MOVE the
sources' traces, SOURCES and TARGETS the matrix, SPACE the tail, DELAY the repeats, FREEZE the grains on the
line. HOME is the aurora itself, bent by the movement's sources and lit by what is sounding, with FILTER, TILT,
AIR and METAL under the knobs for playing. - Presets: twenty-four, from the slow and vast (DEEP, TIDE, CHOIR, ICE, STORM) through SWARM, SUB, ORGAN, MONOLITH, SLIDE,
GRIT, RADIO and ABYSS to the struck (GLASS, MALLET, BELL, GAMELAN, PIANO, PLUCK) and the horns (BRAAM, FOGHORN, WARHORN, TITAN): the PRESETS encoder, or a program change. HOME shows the name, starred once edited. - Expression: CC 80..87 (the Circuit Tracks' macros) are MOVE, SPACE, AIR, TILT, WIDTH, DRIFT, FREEZE, BLOOM;
the keys sense velocity and pressure of their own (Velo's sensing: VELO and SWELL with no controller; KEYS on the MIDI page);
channel pressure or an expression CC swells the pad, poly aftertouch one note, and so does the SELECT encoder;
ALGORITHM on HOME bends the pitch and springs back; PLAY latches (a latched key pressed again lets go; the octave buttons move you to add notes elsewhere); REC held is FREEZE at full; SEQ is the
autopilot, nine controls wandering slowly round where they are set; ARP morphs to a second scene over four
seconds and back (held, PRESETS picks it), SEL cuts; SAVE, PRESETS, SAVE keeps the sound in one of sixteen USER slots.
Early days, but it is all in.
Building
The same platform and tools as CS-1: tests/run_host.sh runs the firmware on
a computer (a WAV and the screens), web/emu/build.sh makes the browser emulator, web/site/build.sh the site,
./build.sh the device package (the JieLi toolchain in Docker; tools/fm1_install.py build/aurora.fwsc installs it).
tests/run_tests.sh runs everything. The package identity is FM-1_96N.
Installing any custom firmware is at your own risk: hold OCT- at power-on for the USB rescue. The official firmware
and any firmware with Felucca's or M-VAVE's update loader install over AURORA.
Licence
GPL-3.0. The platform is Dinghy (Sven Trogus) on Felucca and SLOOP's hardware layer (Leo Kuroshita, Hügelton
Instruments), with FM-106's dual-core worker (PattF) and Felucca's web installer: see LICENSING.md.
AURORA 0.6.0
The sound. A pad of eight voices of twelve sine partials (TILT, SPREAD, BRIGHT, BLOOM, DETUNE), with an ADSR,
velocity and a glide; on TONE 2 a STRETCH of the partials from string to bell, a SUB an octave under, a TUNE and a
DRIVE. A swarm of five saws under it through a filter that tracks the note. Air: wind against crackle through a
resonant band-pass a side, breathing on its own. Movement from four slow sources (a random LFO in every voice, a
random walk, a Lorenz attractor, a tide over bars of the MIDI clock) through a matrix into tilt, colour, pitch and
space. A Dattorro plate with a shimmer, a tape delay, a freeze that holds the delay line and plays grains off it, and
a master filter the Circuit Tracks' way: one knob, off in the middle, high-pass to the left, low-pass to the right.
The screen. Every page is a picture the four knobs shift, each part drawn in the colour of the knob that moves it.
HOME is an aurora: bent live by the movement's sources, coloured by the settings, lit by what is sounding, with a
ray for every held note; pressure lifts it, a bend slides it, the filter dims or thins it. FILTER, TILT, AIR and
MOVE are under its knobs, for playing.
Playing it. Twenty presets, from the slow and vast to the short and struck, and sixteen user slots (PRESETS;
SAVE, PRESETS, SAVE). PLAY latches: a latched key pressed again lets go, and the octave buttons take you to add
notes elsewhere. REC held is the freeze at full. SEQ is the autopilot, nine controls wandering round where they are
set. ARP morphs to a second scene over four seconds and back, SEL cuts. SELECT is pressure, ALGORITHM on HOME a
bend that springs back. Over MIDI: CC 80..87 are the eight macros in the Circuit Tracks' order (MOVE SPACE AIR TILT
WIDTH DRIFT FREEZE BLOOM), CC 74 the master filter, CC 7 the volume; aftertouch or an expression CC swells the pad;
program change picks a preset; the tide counts its bars from the clock.
Installing. From the site's install page in Chrome or Edge over USB, or from the FM-1 Firmware Hub. At your own
risk; OCT- held at power-on is the USB rescue, and any other firmware installs over AURORA the same way. The package
identity is FM-1_960. The manual is on the site.
