OSIRIS v1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 18:19
osiris-v1.0.1
07c23ca

Fixes

  • Updates download on request - v1.0.0 fetched a newer release as soon as it found one, after every power-on. Now it is only offered, and downloaded when you pick it.
  • Update via NET appears - the receiver did not check for updates again once the release was found, so it never listed one. It is now made to check again.
  • Ethernet link after eth0 goes down - the PHY lost its 50 MHz clock mode and found no link until the next boot.

Updating

  • From v1.0.0: osiris-v1.0.1.tar on a USB stick, from the receiver's update screen.
  • From v0.x: install v1.0.0 first; v1.0.1 bundles carry only the FIT, which v0.x cannot install.

OSIRIS v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ubis ubis released this 18 Oct 12:07
osiris-v1.0.0
c58ac01

A new base for OSIRIS: current Linux, U-Boot and Buildroot, one image for every receiver, and updates from GitHub.

Highlights

  • Linux 6.18, U-Boot 2026.07, Buildroot 2026.02.3 in place of the 2009-2014 versions, with musl, procd and the current ubus.
  • One U-Boot and one kernel for all receivers - the kernel is a FIT with a device tree for each model (TX-NR515, TX-NR717); U-Boot boots the one the receiver reports.
  • Updates from GitHub - the receiver looks for a newer release about once a day, fetches it, checks its signature and offers it on its update screen, as it does a USB stick.
  • Room to grow - the slots are as large as their images and the rest of the flash stays free for larger ones; the data volume is 8 MiB.
  • Replacement NAND chips with 2 KiB or 4 KiB pages: U-Boot lays the partitions out for the chip's block size. A bad block table is written only when installing.
  • osiris-diag also reports the flash and UBI health, the U-Boot images in both slots, dspboot's version and the device tree.

Updating

  • From v0.x: copy osiris-v1.0.0.tar to a USB stick and install it from the receiver's update screen. v0.x cannot fetch updates from the network and cannot unpack a v1 bundle from /tmp.
  • From v1.0 on: the receiver offers new releases itself.
  • First install: boot kernel.itb with initrd-installer over TFTP, see docs/install.md. dspboot v1.1.0 is recommended.

dspboot v1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ubis ubis released this 18 Oct 10:17
dspboot-v1.1.0
adeb36e

Adds a board for receivers whose SDRAM needs 100 MHz, takes NAND chips as the boot ROM does, and shows the boot ROM's revision. Images, tools and checksums are in the zip.

  • onkyo-tx-nr-100: the same board with the SDRAM at 100 MHz, for boards whose SDRAM does not read reliably at 133 MHz.
  • Bad blocks and chips are found as the boot ROM finds them: its bad block rule, ONFI chips from their parameter page, and the ROM's own table of device IDs.
  • dspboot and U-Boot images are written past a bad block into the next good one, as the ROM reads them, so a chip with block 1 bad can take dspboot.
  • nandrestore.py takes dspboot.ais and u-boot.dbi directly and adds the spare bytes for --page 512, 2048 or 4096, so the zip no longer has dspboot-512b.nand, -2k and -4k: write dspboot.ais@0x4000 (or the chip's block 1, see the README).
  • The SoC: line shows the boot ROM (d800k001, d800k003 or d800k005), and silicon 2.1 as such.

Changelog

  • dspboot: add an onkyo-tx-nr board with the SDRAM at 100 MHz (7bd077a)
  • dspboot: let nandrestore wrap images for the chip's page size (8464a93)
  • dspboot: tell bad blocks and chips apart as the boot ROM does (884aa87)
  • dspboot: write boot images past bad blocks (096cd0d)
  • dspboot: show the boot ROM's revision (e665f20)

OSIRIS v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ubis ubis released this 16 Oct 19:22
osiris-v0.4.0
e934b62

AirPlay and Dolby Digital, and more of the receiver's audio settings.

Highlights

  • AirPlay - the receiver shows up as an AirPlay speaker. It switches itself to NET when a sender starts playing, shows the track and play state on the front panel, and the sender's volume slider sets the receiver's volume.
  • Dolby Digital - decoded on the DSP from HDMI and optical, played as 5.1 or folded into the speakers there are, and shown on the front panel as Dolby D with its layout.
  • A/V sync, Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume from the receiver's menus.
  • Surround back speakers from 5.1 - they repeat the surrounds.
  • Headphones - all channels are folded into them at full range, without the room's speaker distances and equalizer.
  • 88.2 and 96 kHz - a half-band filter in and out instead of averaging, flat to 20 kHz. Sources above 96 kHz play silence instead of overloading the DSP.
  • Rear USB port - USB sticks now work in both ports.
  • Level meter and DSP load - ubus call dsp status shows how busy the DSP is.

Fixes

  • Left and right were swapped on HDMI sources.
  • Speaker distances were read wrong.
  • Changing the equalizer cleared the bass management crossovers for a moment.
  • Tone controls and Dynamic EQ could clip: the largest boost now comes off every channel first, and the analog volume makes up the level.
  • The DSP started only with a source present; it now starts without a clock and waits for one.

Updating from v0.3.0

From a USB stick: copy osiris-v0.4.0.tar to the top directory of a FAT stick and plug it into the receiver; it offers the update on its update screens. Or over the network:

scp osiris-v0.4.0.tar root@TX-NR717:/tmp/
ssh root@TX-NR717 osiris-upgrade /tmp/osiris-v0.4.0.tar

New installs: see docs/install.md.

OSIRIS v0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ubis ubis released this 15 Oct 12:18
osiris-v0.3.0
fdac2c9

The receiver's audio settings come to life: HDMI audio up to 5.1, speaker setup with bass management and distances, surround and sound field modes, the manual equalizer, and firmware updates from a USB stick through the receiver's own update screens.

Highlights

  • HDMI audio - stereo PCM at 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, and multichannel PCM with every channel on its own speaker. Dolby and DTS bitstreams, which OSIRIS cannot decode yet, are muted instead of playing as noise.
  • Speaker setup - the receiver's speaker menu is followed: speakers set to none are left out (their channels moved onto the others), small speakers send their bass to the subwoofer, double bass, LFE low pass, and the front panel's speaker indicators and relays match the setup.
  • Speaker distances - each speaker is held back so that its sound arrives together with the farthest one.
  • Surround from stereo in the Surround, PLII, Neo:6, Neural and THX modes, and a room on top of it in the sound field modes (Orchestra, Unplugged, Studio-Mix, TV Logic). OSIRIS's own processing, not the stock algorithms.
  • Manual equalizer - 15 bands per speaker, 5 for the subwoofer, from the receiver's menu.
  • Tone controls and LFE level - bass and treble, and the LFE level for multichannel PCM.
  • Level calibration - pink noise on the speaker the receiver picks.
  • USB updates - plug a stick with an OSIRIS bundle into the front USB port and the receiver offers it on its update screens, as with the stock firmware. The rear port does not work yet.
  • Network menu - the receiver shows the address, MAC and name; data is synced before the receiver switches the board off, and a factory reset wipes it.
  • Smaller system - ALSA and unused kernel drivers removed: the root file system is 1.3 MB (was 2.0), the bundle 3.3 MB (was 4.6).

Fixes

  • No sound after standby: coming out of it the MCU asks for the whole handshake again, and only then closes the speaker relays.
  • Left and right were swapped on every output.
  • The receiver switched the board off before its data was synced; it now waits for OSIRIS to finish.
  • A crash of the root file system when the data volume was opened as a block device (blkid).

Updating from v0.2.0

Copy osiris-v0.3.0.tar to the receiver and run the update:

scp osiris-v0.3.0.tar root@TX-NR717:/tmp/
ssh root@TX-NR717 osiris-upgrade /tmp/osiris-v0.3.0.tar

From this version on, later updates can also come from a USB stick through the receiver's update screens. New installs: see docs/install.md.

OSIRIS v0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ubis ubis released this 12 Oct 18:24
osiris-v0.2.0
2da3703

Sound on every channel, real stereo, a one-file installer and a much faster U-Boot network - plus fixes for three bugs in v0.1.0.

Highlights

  • Sound on all channels - All Ch Stereo and Full Mono play on every speaker. The receiver's listening mode picks the speakers, and OSIRIS remembers it across restarts.
  • Real stereo - a DSP bug mixed left and right on every output; both channels are now kept apart.
  • One-file installer - uImage-installer carries the whole system. A first install needs dspboot, the installer and U-Boot from the bundle, sent once over the serial cable.
  • Fast network in U-Boot - a driver bug corrupted incoming frames; the installer now loads in seconds instead of minutes.
  • Faster start - about 19 s instead of 24 s, and the receiver's services start before the network.
  • osiris-diag - one archive with everything needed for a bug report.
  • Login banner with the receiver model, version, MAC and IP address.

Fixes

  • The root password can be changed with passwd; on v0.1.0 it stayed at the default.
  • Commands over ssh, such as ssh root@TX-NR717 osiris-upgrade ..., find the OSIRIS tools.

Updating from v0.1.0

Copy osiris-v0.2.0.tar to the receiver, log in with ssh and run the update in that shell (on v0.1.0 a command given directly to ssh does not find it):

scp osiris-v0.2.0.tar root@TX-NR717:/tmp/
ssh root@TX-NR717
osiris-upgrade /tmp/osiris-v0.2.0.tar

Then change the root password with passwd. New installs: see docs/install.md; dspboot v1.0.1 is a separate release.

dspboot v1.0

@ubis ubis released this 11 Oct 16:48
dspboot-v1.0

First release of dspboot - open source first stage boot loader and repair tool for boards with the TI D830 (DA830) / OMAP-L137, like the Onkyo TX-NR515 and TX-NR717.

What it does:

  • boots over a serial cable, no matter what's on the NAND - brings back "bricked" boards
  • restores NAND backups (stock firmware) byte for byte, with the boot ROM's own ECC layout
  • works with old 512 byte page NAND and new 2K / 4K page chips you can still buy
  • reports chip, clocks, SDRAM (with memory test) and NAND with bad blocks
  • boots U-Boot from two slots with fallback (that's how OSIRIS starts)

dspboot-v1.0.zip has the images for onkyo-tx-nr (for the serial cable and for NAND, per page size), the tools (uartboot.py, nandrestore.py, aisdump.py, need Python 3 + pyserial), README and checksums. In the zip the images are in onkyo-tx-nr/ and the tools in tools/, so adjust the paths from the README examples (dist/dspboot/<board>/, dspboot/tools/).

Quick start - put the board into UART boot mode and:

python3 tools/uartboot.py -p /dev/ttyUSB0 --ais onkyo-tx-nr/dspboot.ais --console

How to restore the stock firmware or replace the NAND: docs/recovery.md.
