Hello, I just installed Aurora on my device and noticed that Firefox (from Flatpak) which is automatically pre-installed with the OS cannot detect any hardware accelerated decoding/encoding through VAAPI ( in about:support web page under Media section only software coders were available ). I though that this is weird since native vainfo command is installed, and in the case of my hardware correctly detects working Intel coders.
The fix for it as I found out is simple, in my case all that was required was installing org.freedesktop.Platform.VAAPI.Intel, which itself was downloaded automatically when I installed the vainfo package from the flathub repository. After that all supported codecs did show up in Firefox browser as expected. ( Also I saw someone mention the package org.freedesktop.Platform.ffmpeg-full on the firefox support forum, but in my case it was not necessary, so I did not test it ).
I wondered if this was omitted by design, or was it simply missed when the OS was packaged, hence I wanted to point it out here.
I personally believe that if there is no technical issues, such as maybe corrupted video output, crashing processes or anything in such nature which would worsen the user experience, that it would be wise to automatically install VAAPI packages for the user.
Also for completeness sake, here are my devices information (which I find relevant):
Operating System: Aurora 44(Version: 44.20260908.1)
Kernel Version: 7.1.8-200.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i5-8365U CPU @ 1.60GHz
Graphics Processor: Intel® UHD Graphics 620
