Stamp v1.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 20 Oct 22:54

Stamp now has packages for more Linux distributions and is MIT licensed.

  • Fedora: new .rpm package.
  • Debian 12+: the .deb now installs on Debian as well as on Ubuntu 22.04+.
  • Arch: new stamp-sd package, built with makepkg from the repo for now (it isn't on the AUR yet). It's named stamp-sd because the AUR's stamp is a different app; the two can't be installed side by side.
  • Stamp is now released under the MIT license.
  • macOS and Windows: unchanged apart from the version number.

Note: the Windows app isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher the first time. Choose "More info" → "Run anyway".

Install

Windows 10/11 (x64): download Stamp-1.6.0-win-x64.exe and run it.

macOS 14+: download Stamp-1.6.0.dmg, open it and drag Stamp into Applications.

Stamp v1.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 20 Oct 12:48

A small packaging release for Ubuntu.

  • Ubuntu: the PolicyKit actions are now com.ugurcaneser.stamp.format-fat32 and com.ugurcaneser.stamp.format-fat32-unrestricted (previously a placeholder org.example.stamp prefix). Upgrading replaces the old policy file automatically. Behaviour is unchanged: removable cards still format without a password, the non-removable override still asks for one.
  • Ubuntu: the package now lists a real maintainer.
  • macOS and Windows: unchanged apart from the version number.

Note: the Windows app isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher the first time. Choose "More info" → "Run anyway".

Install

Windows 10/11 (x64): download Stamp-1.5.1-win-x64.exe and run it.

macOS 14+: download Stamp-1.5.1.dmg, open it and drag Stamp into Applications.

Ubuntu:

Stamp v1.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 20 Oct 12:34

Stamp now runs on Windows too: a native app with the same simple three-step window and the same safety rules as the macOS and Ubuntu builds.

  • New Windows 10/11 app: pick a card, pick a zip, name it, confirm once. Stamp erases the card as FAT32 (also above 32 GB, which Windows' own tools refuse), copies the zip's contents and ejects the card.
  • Stamp writes the FAT32 file system itself; diskpart only creates the partition table. Formatted volumes pass fsck.fat and Windows' chkdsk, and CI runs the whole Windows flow against a 40 GB virtual disk on every change.
  • Asks for administrator rights once at launch (needed for raw disk access).
  • The disk Windows runs from and virtual disks are never listed. Disks not marked removable need an explicit confirmation. The card is re-checked right before erasing and refused if it was swapped.
  • The zip is checked and extracted before anything is erased. Symlinks are skipped, and the app warns about files of 4 GB or more (FAT32's limit).
  • One self-contained .exe, no .NET install needed.
  • macOS and Ubuntu: unchanged apart from the version number.

Note: the Windows app isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher the first time. Choose "More info" → "Run anyway".

Stamp v1.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 18 Oct 19:12

Stamp now has its own icon and a simpler, clearer window on both macOS and Ubuntu.

  • New app icon, shown in the Dock/Launchpad on macOS and in the GNOME app grid and window on Ubuntu.
  • The main window is three numbered steps: choose a card, choose a zip, name the card. A hint next to the single Format & Copy button says what's still missing.
  • Drag a zip file onto the window to pick it.
  • The confirmation dialog shows the card, the zip and the name at a glance before anything is erased.
  • The progress screen lists each phase; the raw log moved under a collapsible "Details" section. It ends on a clear "Your card is ready" or error screen.
  • Ubuntu: the radio button of an auto-selected card now shows as checked.
  • Ubuntu: the GTK app ID and desktop file are now com.ugurcaneser.Stamp.

Note: the erase/copy path on both platforms is still only unit tested. Try it with a card you don't mind losing first.

Install

macOS 14+: download Stamp-1.4.0.dmg, open it and drag Stamp into Applications.

Stamp v1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 18 Oct 18:52

This release adds a native macOS app. The Linux package is unchanged apart from the version number.

  • New SwiftUI app for macOS 14+ with the same flow and safety rules as the Linux build: pick a card and a zip, confirm once, and Stamp erases the card as FAT32 (at any size), copies the zip's contents and ejects it.
  • Uses diskutil directly, so there is no privileged helper and no password prompt.
  • The zip is checked and extracted before the card is erased, so a bad zip never costs a wipe. The card is re-checked right before erasing and refused if it changed since confirmation.
  • The boot disk, disks with system volumes and disk images are never offered.
  • Files are copied without extended attributes, and the hidden files macOS puts on FAT volumes (._*, .Spotlight-V100, .Trashes, .fseventsd) are removed before ejecting.
  • Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Note: the macOS erase/copy/eject path has been tested against recorded diskutil output only, not yet on a real card. Try it with a card you don't mind losing first.

Install

macOS: download Stamp-1.3.0.dmg, open it and drag Stamp into Applications.

Ubuntu:

wget https://github.com/ugurcaneser/stamp/releases/download/v1.3.0/stamp_1.3.0_all.deb

Stamp v1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 18 Oct 18:17

This release removes the password prompt from the normal formatting flow while keeping the hard safety blocks around system disks.

  • Formats removable SD cards and USB drives without a password in the active local session.
  • Keeps an admin password prompt for devices not marked removable, through a separate privileged helper.
  • The privileged helper now verifies removability itself and refuses disks with anything mounted at a system path.
  • Fixes mounting after the non-removable override, which could fail instead of asking for authorization.

Security trade-off: any program running in your desktop session can now format a removable device without asking. Remote and inactive sessions remain denied.

sudo apt install ./stamp_1.2.0_all.deb

Stamp v1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 14 Sep 16:54

This release streamlines the formatting flow while preserving the hard safety blocks around system disks.

  • Uses one concise format summary instead of multiple warning dialogs.
  • Removes device-path typing and the erase acknowledgement for removable devices.
  • Keeps an explicit risk acknowledgement for devices not marked removable.
  • Adds automated tests, syntax checks, and Debian package validation in CI.

Stamp v1.0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 11 Sep 15:01

Fixes another packaging dependency bug from v1.0.1: apt install still
failed, this time on policykit-1 | polkitd-pkexec — neither package name
exists on newer Ubuntu (confirmed on Ubuntu 26.04 "resolute" via
apt-cache policy on real hardware).

  • Depends now use pkexec | policykit-1 and polkitd | policykit-1
    separately, matching how newer Ubuntu ships pkexec and polkitd as
    independent packages while older Ubuntu (22.04) still bundles both into
    policykit-1.

Install

wget https://github.com/ugurcaneser/stamp/releases/download/v1.0.2/stamp_1.0.2_all.deb
sudo apt install ./stamp_1.0.2_all.deb

Stamp v1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 11 Sep 14:58

Fixes a packaging bug in v1.0.0: apt install failed with unsatisfiable
dependencies (gir1.2-udisks2-2.0, policykit-1).

  • gir1.2-udisks2-2.0 -> gir1.2-udisks-2.0 (the GIR typelib namespace is
    "UDisks", not "UDisks2" -- the old name doesn't exist as a package).
  • policykit-1 -> policykit-1 | polkitd-pkexec (Ubuntu 24.04+ replaced
    policykit-1 with polkitd/polkitd-pkexec).

Found by actually installing v1.0.0 on real Ubuntu hardware.

Install

wget https://github.com/ugurcaneser/stamp/releases/download/v1.0.1/stamp_1.0.1_all.deb
sudo apt install ./stamp_1.0.1_all.deb

Stamp v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ugurcaneser ugurcaneser released this 11 Sep 14:49

Initial release.

Formats a removable SD card or USB drive as FAT32 (forced, regardless of card
size — including >32GB cards that most stock GUI formatters refuse), and
copies a user-provided zip's contents onto it. GTK4 + libadwaita GUI plus a
stamp --cli scripting mode, targeting Ubuntu 22.04+/24.04+.

Install

sudo apt install ./stamp_1.0.0_all.deb

Requires: python3-gi, gir1.2-gtk-4.0, gir1.2-adw-1, policykit-1,
udisks2, parted, dosfstools, rsync (declared as package Depends, apt
will pull them in).

Usage

stamp                  # GUI
stamp --cli list # list candidate removable devices
stamp --cli prepare --device /dev/sdb --zip firmware.zip --label BOOT

See README.md and ARCHITECTURE.md in the repo for the safety model and the
privilege-separation design (udisks2 D-Bus + a small pkexec-invoked helper
for the actual partition/mkfs.vfat -F 32 step).

Testing note: this was built and unit-tested (84 tests) outside a Linux
environment. The GUI was built and manually exercised against a real
GTK4/libadwaita runtime; the udisks2/pkexec/parted/mkfs.vfat path is
implemented per spec but has not yet been run end-to-end on real Ubuntu
hardware with a real card. See README's Development section before relying
on this in production.
