EveryWord TV v0.3.2: Back returns to the library, filmed on an Amazon-hosted Fire TV

@usv240 usv240 released this 03 Oct 06:22

The Fire TV app, with the remote's Back button fixed.

Fixed since v0.3.1: pressing Back on the remote during a story quit
the app. Fire OS sends Back as a hardware key, which React Native
delivers as hardwareBackPress; v0.3.1 listened for the menu TV
event, which Apple TV sends and Fire TV never does, so the system
closed the app. Back now returns to the library and reports the words
played, which is what the README always said it did. On the library,
Back still leaves the app, as every Fire TV app does there.

Found on an Amazon-hosted Fire TV (Appstore Quality Central, Live
Device Interaction, FOS 14 3P TV), where this release was installed,
run and filmed for the demo video. An Android TV virtual device never
showed the bug. FRICTION_LOG.md entry 16.

Otherwise v0.3.1: Sintel, distributed by the Blender Foundation under
CC BY 3.0, playing full screen with the English subtitles that came
inside the film, lit one word at a time, and five public-domain fables.
Nothing in the film's captions was written by us; Amazon Transcribe
supplied only the timings.

Install:

adb connect <your Fire TV ip>:5555
adb install everyword-tv-v0.3.2.apk

Contains arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a and x86_64, so it installs on Fire TV
hardware as well as an emulator. versionCode 2, versionName 0.3.2.

@usv240 usv240 released this 20 Sep 21:33

The Fire TV app, carrying a real film.

v0.2.0 shipped the reader with five spoken fables. This build adds the
thing the project is actually about: Sintel, distributed by the Blender
Foundation under CC BY 3.0, playing full screen with the English
subtitles that came inside the film, lit one word at a time.

Nothing in those captions was written by us. The subtitle file is the
filmmakers'. Amazon Transcribe supplied only the timings and was never
asked what the words are, so the text on screen is identical, character
for character, to the file the film shipped with. 74 of its 75 words in
the sample cue anchored to a recognised word.

The film is inside the APK, which is why this is 67.6 MB where v0.2.0
was 41.7 MB. The reader works with the network unplugged.

Install:

adb connect <your Fire TV ip>:5555
adb install everyword-tv-v0.3.0.apk

Contains arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a and x86_64, so it installs on Fire TV
hardware as well as an emulator.

EveryWord TV v0.2.0

@usv240 usv240 released this 20 Sep 16:01

The whole library on the television, the remote's own buttons, and reading progress reported to EveryWord's MCP server.

Install on a Fire TV

adb connect <your-fire-tv-ip>
adb install everyword-tv-v0.2.0.apk

Enable ADB debugging and Apps from unknown sources first: Settings, My Fire TV, Developer options.

What changed since v0.1.0

  • All five public-domain Aesop fables ship in the APK, chosen from a D-pad row. Word counts and durations on the cards are computed from the caption documents that drive the highlight, not written beside them.
  • The remote's real media keys work: play/pause, five-second rewind and fast-forward, and Back to the library. v0.1.0 ignored all of them.
  • The app reports the words the karaoke cursor passed to record_reading_session on EveryWord's public MCP endpoint, over the same Streamable HTTP transport Alexa+ uses. Ask an assistant how far a child got and the answer comes off the television. Reporting fails silently; the reader works offline.
  • Landscape orientation declared in the manifest.

Verified end to end on an Android TV virtual device: 113 words read on the TV, 113 returned by get_reading_progress from the deployed server.

Build

armeabi-v7a, arm64-v8a and x86_64, so it installs on real Fire TV hardware. Signed with the debug keystore, which is fine for sideloading and is not Appstore-ready. The two-step release procedure, and why each half runs from a different path on Windows, is in tv/README.md.

It has still not run on physical Fire TV hardware. docs/FIRE_TV_TARGET.md says exactly what that does and does not prove.

@usv240 usv240 released this 15 Sep 04:14

Self-contained release build of the EveryWord Fire TV app: JS bundle and public-domain content included, no dev server needed. Verified running on an Android TV emulator (API 36) with no Metro attached; 58 seconds of screen-capture footage is attached.

Sideload to a Fire TV stick:

  1. On the stick: Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > enable ADB Debugging and Apps from Unknown Sources.
  2. From a computer on the same network: adb connect <stick-ip>:5555 then adb install everyword-tv-v0.1.0.apk.
  3. The app appears in Your Apps as EveryWordTV. Arrow keys plus Select drive everything.

Contents: Aesop's The Two Pots (LibriVox, public domain) with word-timed captions generated by Amazon Transcribe through the EveryWord pipeline. Timing accuracy is measured against gold LibriSpeech alignments at 30 ms median (docs/EVAL.md). Build notes for the Windows toolchain fights are in FRICTION_LOG.md entries 3 to 5.
