Currently a page in Ancient Greek (even if <html lang="grc"> is used) results in a warning that lang="el" should be used as the page was detected as Greek.

Whether it could have been identified as Ancient Greek vs Modern Greek aside, it would be nice if pages detected as Greek would not generate a warning if grc rather than el is used.

Thanks for reporting this. I’ve committed a fix to the sources in 445b550 and 2f3d632, and pushed that fix to https://validator.w3.org/nu/
