Harness Studio 0.3.4

Choose a tag to compare

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 21 Oct 05:16

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. 0.3.4 makes switching models or providers in the middle of a chat dependable, for example when one provider runs out of credit and you carry on with another.

Downloads

Platform File
macOS (Apple Silicon) Harness-Studio-0.3.4-mac-arm64.dmg
Linux x64 Harness-Studio-0.3.4-linux-x64.AppImage or harness-studio_0.3.4_amd64.deb
Linux arm64 Harness-Studio-0.3.4-linux-arm64.AppImage or harness-studio_0.3.4_arm64.deb
Chrome extension (optional) harness-studio-chrome-bridge-0.5.1.zip: unzip, then follow chrome-bridge/README.md

Each file has a .sha256 checksum next to it. Windows isn't available yet.

macOS: the app isn't signed by Apple, so the first open is blocked. Open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. If macOS says the app "is damaged", run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Harness Studio.app" and open it again. Details are in the README.

Linux: install the .deb with sudo apt install ./harness-studio_0.3.4_amd64.deb, or make the AppImage executable and run it. AppImages on Ubuntu 22.04 and later need libfuse2 (libfuse2t64 on 24.04). See desktop/README.md.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

What's new

  • Too-long requests recover by themselves: when a provider refuses a request as too long or too large (common right after switching to a model with a smaller context window), the chat is condensed and the request retried, aiming smaller each time, before the turn is given up. The condensing request shrinks the same way, so it can't fail for the same reason.
  • Context size after a switch: the previous provider's token counts are no longer trusted once you switch; the size is estimated until the new provider reports its own, so compaction and the context meter stay right.
  • Cleaner history across providers: parts only the original model can use (signed or encrypted reasoning, results of tools the provider ran itself) are sent back only to that model; readable reasoning goes across as plain text, and tool-call ids are cleaned for the new provider, so a switch no longer fails on another provider's history.

Switching models still resets the prompt cache, as it does in Claude Code, and the new model reads the whole earlier conversation.

Upgrading from 0.3.3 needs nothing special: replace the app, and your sessions, settings and keys stay as they are.

The full list is in the changelog.

Harness Studio 0.3.3

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 21 Oct 03:18

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. 0.3.3 brings Claude Code's rewind, retry and session handling: rewind any chat to an earlier message, retry a failed turn, see when the agent has read a message you sent mid-turn, and have it offer or suggest separate sessions that sit nested under their parent.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

What's new

Like Claude Code

  • Rewind: under each of your messages, or Esc twice in an empty message box. Restore the code and conversation, just the conversation, or just the code, in a dialog that shows the files and the lines added and removed. The chat rewinds in place.
  • Retry: a failed turn has a Retry button that sends the same message again with the model you have chosen now.
  • Read ticks: a message you send while the agent works shows "Waiting", then "Read" once the agent has taken it.
  • Sessions offered and suggested: a new, unrelated task gets a "New session / Do it here" card first, and follow-ups the agent thinks of appear as "Suggested session" cards you can start later.
  • Nested sessions: sessions the agent started are listed under the session that started them, with their status on the right.

Fixes and polish

  • Started sessions run on their parent's model instead of the app-wide default.
  • With no model chosen, Send is held back and the message box points to Settings → Models.
  • The Git page opens beside the sidebar like the other pages.
  • Dragging the sidebar or right panel edge over a long diff no longer lags or selects text.
  • A message's time and buttons sit under it, smaller, as in Claude.

Upgrading from 0.3.2 needs nothing special: replace the app, and your sessions, settings and keys stay as they are.

Harness Studio 0.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 20 Oct 19:12

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. 0.3.2 is a small update: the app shows its own version everywhere, an empty model list tells you where to add one, and the About page links to the ways you can support the project.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

Changes

  • The right version everywhere: 0.3.1 called itself 0.2.1-rc.2 (the version of the Harness it is built on) beside the sidebar logo, in the Mac About window and in the disk image's name. 0.3.2 shows its own version in all of them.
  • An empty model list says what to do: with no model provider set up, the model picker now says to add a provider and its API key in Settings → Models, with a button that opens that page.
  • Support Harness Studio: the About page links to GitHub Sponsors, Ko-fi and PayPal, the same pages as the repository's Sponsor button.

Upgrading from 0.3.1 needs nothing special: replace the app, and your sessions, settings and keys stay as they are.

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 20 Oct 17:44

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. 0.3.1 adds live dashboards, speech to text on this computer, design boards and app building, a search in Settings, and much smaller requests in long sessions.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

Upgrading from 0.3.0

  • Speech to text downloads its speech model (about 241 MB) the first time you use it, after you agree. When the agent first needs ffmpeg and your computer has none, it asks once and downloads a pinned, checksum-checked build into Harness Studio's data folder.
  • Database logins (PostgreSQL and MySQL login files) are now hidden from the agent's commands until you turn them on in Settings → Permissions → Cloud logins for commands.
  • Questions and approvals now appear as cards in the conversation instead of above the message box.

Highlights

Making things

  • Live dashboards: a page of charts with a refresh script per data source, refreshed each time you open it once you approve the scripts; Keep fresh while closed, and Save snapshot to send one HTML file.
  • Design boards and the Design pane: screens drafted side by side at phone, tablet and desktop widths in your own colours and fonts.
  • Desktop and mobile apps: Mac, Android and Linux apps built and checked inside the sandbox.
  • Charts, icons and diagrams, and web pages checked at phone, tablet and desktop widths.

Speech and media

  • Dictation: the microphone button dictates into your message, with a language menu in the recording bar.
  • Transcription: the agent transcribes a recording or video, or a part you marked, with the time each piece was said. Recognition runs on this computer; no audio leaves it.
  • Videos and audio play in the Files tab, with a bar to mark a part and add it to your message.

The agent

  • Much smaller requests in long sessions: images the agent looked at leave the request after five steps, and with DeepSeek's Flash model the reasoning from earlier turns is not sent again.
  • Helper agents when they pay off, as in Claude Code, and database logins for commands alongside the cloud ones.
  • A Claude Code-style terminal chat with approvals and slash commands.

The app

  • Search in Settings finds any row on any page; Settings has more pages; the About page covers every feature and who makes the app.
  • Questions and approvals in the conversation, queued messages in the chat, Unsend, and recall of only this chat's prompts.
  • Header menus like Harness's own, and the window recovers by itself when the app swaps its own parts while running.

Harness Studio 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 19 Oct 01:23

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. 0.3.0 brings much of Claude Code's workflow into the app: a terminal command and chat, computer use, hooks, rewind, memory, command rules and a safer sandbox. It also includes the 0.2.1 changes, which were not published separately.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

Upgrading from 0.2.0

  • Linux: harness-studio in a terminal is now the command-line tool, as on macOS. Open the app from your applications menu.
  • Instruction files: sessions read Harness Studio's own files only: ~/.harness-studio/AGENTS.md, then each project folder's AGENTS.md and AGENTS.local.md. CLAUDE.md is no longer read; move its rules into AGENTS.md, or make CLAUDE.md a link to it.
  • Plan mode now holds the workspace read-only while it is on, so commands cannot change files during planning.
  • Secret files are hidden from the agent: SSH keys, cloud and registry credentials, and .env files outside the workspace.
  • Computer use (macOS) asks for Accessibility and Screen Recording. Because the app is not signed with a Developer ID, macOS may ask again after each update.

Highlights

Command line

  • harness-studio command on macOS (app menu → Install Command-Line Tool…) and Linux (installed with the .deb): give it a task or pipe text into it; --json prints events for scripts and --session-id continues a session.
  • Chat in the terminal: run harness-studio with no task to chat in one session; Ctrl-C stops a reply, Ctrl-D or /exit quits.

The agent

  • Computer use (macOS): the agent can see and control apps on your Mac, one approved app at a time, with a Stop bar.
  • Replies like Claude Code's, written as your global instructions on first start, editable on the Instructions page.
  • Auto memory, hooks, command rules and rewind, each modelled on Claude Code's.
  • Browser DevTools, watches and full-screen terminal programs for the agent.

Safety

  • Network for commands: On, Off or only allowed sites.
  • Asking before new sites for web fetch and pages the agent opens, with Always allow for this website.
  • Per-connector approval, authenticated Chrome picks, and hidden secret files.

The app

  • Instructions page: every instruction file with its size and status, the agent's memories, and the system prompt, read only.
  • Files tab with every viewer: PDFs, images, spreadsheets, Word and PowerPoint, plus Markdown rendered or as source.
  • Git page, code editor, colour themes, Claude Code–style question and approval cards, one table and code style, prompt history and a new worktree for your own session.

The full list is in the changelog.

Harness Studio 0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@vigneshv1cky vigneshv1cky released this 17 Oct 19:04

Harness Studio is a desktop coding agent for macOS and Linux, built on DeepSeek Harness, that works with any model provider. This is the first release with downloadable apps.

Chrome extension (optional) harness-studio-chrome-bridge-0.5.0.zip: unzip, then follow chrome-bridge/README.md

Linux: install the .deb with sudo apt install ./harness-studio_0.2.0_amd64.deb, or make the AppImage executable and run it. AppImages on Ubuntu 22.04 and later need libfuse2 (libfuse2t64 on 24.04). See desktop/README.md.

On first launch, click Choose a model provider and add an API key for any provider.

What's new in 0.2.0

Added

  • Linux packages: an AppImage and a .deb for x64 and arm64, built and smoke-tested on GitHub Actions. The .deb installs the sound library a minimal system lacks and registers harness-studio:// links, and Linux windows show the app's icon in the taskbar.
  • Usage card: the Session pane shows the session's usage readings in two columns.
  • Compact + menu and question panel: the composer's + menu is a compact popover with rounded corners, and the question panel takes less room.
  • Pane menu: each stacked pane has its own expand, close and Browser tools, with a pane menu sized like Claude Code desktop's.
  • Sessions plugin: the agent can hand work to a separate session in the sidebar with a written brief, optionally in its own git worktree, and gets each turn's report back. It has its own approval card and a Plugins-page title and description.

Changed

  • No DeepSeek sign-in or feedback: the welcome screen has a single "Choose a model provider" button that opens Settings → Models, where DeepSeek is an ordinary provider used with an API key. The account pages, thumbs, Feedback command and Session-log upload are gone.
  • First-use workspace: new installs keep it in Documents/Harness Studio. An existing Documents/deepseek-harness workspace is kept where it is.
  • README screenshots show the current app on sample content.
  • Compact welcome screen: the first-launch window is 420 × 340 instead of 600 × 700, with the mark, greeting and button grouped together and the greeting in the system font.
  • Check for Updates… opens the Releases page, since the app has no automatic updates.
  • README: a "First launch on macOS" section for the unsigned app (Open Anyway, and the fix for the "damaged" message).

Fixed

  • Settings → Models stayed closed when "Choose a model provider" was clicked before the plugins finished loading.
  • Linux: converting Word, Excel and PowerPoint files to PDF failed in the packaged app; it now uses the Office kit's WebAssembly engine.
  • Linux: the default workspace could not be created when the system reports no separate Documents folder.
  • The Session pane showed "No folder" for Windows paths and shortened only macOS home folders to ~.
