0TV 1.1.1 - Google TV star-button fix

Choose a tag to compare

@vio137 vio137 released this 01 Nov 15:03

Fixes the Google TV star (customizable) button. Closes #1.

What was wrong: installing a 0TV home screen ran the launcher handover, which disabled Google's stock launcher (launcherx) over ADB. On Google TV that package also serves the remote's star/customizable button and its entry under Settings > Remotes & Accessories, so the button died and the setting vanished.

The fix: the handover now sets the Home preference and HOME role first and asks Android where Home points. On firmware that honors it (Google TV Streamer / Android 14 and most devices) nothing is disabled, so the star button, its Settings entry and Cast keep working. Firmware that ignores the preference (for example TCL G06) keeps the old disable fallback - the only way Home can move there.

If your star button is already broken: re-enable the stock launcher once with adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.tv.launcherx (and re-enable the Google TV setup app as well if it was disabled - the exact commands are in issue #1), then update to 1.1.1.

Installs in place over 1.1.0 and 1.0.0-rc8 - same signing identity, no uninstall needed.

  • Package: app.tvtidy.cleaner · versionCode 10
  • Phone: Android 8.0+ (API 26), ARM64 / ARMv7
  • Size: 22,307,738 bytes
  • SHA-256: 26f660036f27b1413ffa32223221e2f19d6b2d5fb0900e5157e4fa399174c9fb

Verified: full unit-test suite passes with new regression tests for both handover paths; APK signature matches the 1.1.0 release certificate. The physical star button itself was not hardware-tested (no Google TV Streamer available) - confirmation welcome on #1.

0TV 1.1.0 - Visual redesign

Choose a tag to compare

@vio137 vio137 released this 31 Oct 13:39

0TV 1.1.0 - a full visual redesign of the phone app and the bundled TV launchers, with no changes to features, limits, or behavior.

What changed

Phone app

  • New calm dark theme: deep ink surfaces, a single blue accent, flat cards with hairline borders, sentence-case labels
  • Redesigned welcome, home, review, ad-block, remote and setup-complete screens with the same system
  • Real app icons and your real app list everywhere - no decorative art or mascots

TV launchers

  • Ambient red glow is off by default (the glow themes are still there if you want them)
  • Flat, quiet dock and pills with a hairline edge; sentence-case labels
  • Real app banners with a clean white focus ring for remote navigation

Website and repo

  • vio137.github.io/0TV redesigned to match the app, with real screenshots from this build
  • README refreshed; design credit to unslop by Damir Sokolovsky (CC BY 4.0)

No features, limits, or data handling changed. Debloat lists and the optional ADB actions are exactly as before.

Install

Installs in place over 1.0.0-rc8 - same signing certificate, no uninstall needed, your apps and settings stay.

  • File: 0TV-1.1.0.apk (24,743,846 bytes)
  • SHA-256: deffb01fe208371d8d7a12b2e27adb74eaeafa5122904dcff5a4dd8c70fd1683
  • Signing certificate SHA-256: 3b5057c1ad574820ca80269cca1c0e798ae439e71f43729f3b7d54ca90fe9729

Verification

Full automated test suite passes: all unit tests plus the screenshot suite (223 rendered states) re-verified against the new design. One animation test's assertion was updated - it counted changed pixels, which a solid-color button breaks; it now compares visual distance. The animation code itself is unchanged.

Launcher visuals were verified by build and code review only - no TV emulator or physical TV was used. If anything looks off on your TV, report it and it gets fixed.

v1.0.0-rc8

@vio137 vio137 released this 28 Oct 20:04

J10TV installer section and tap-to-refresh TV preview.

  • New optional J10TV section installs the open-source JioTV Go app (MIT, https://github.com/JioTV-Go/jiotv_go_app) from its own GitHub releases: latest stable only, SHA-256 checked against GitHub's published digest, package id and pinned signing certificate verified before anything is sent, ABI/Android/storage preflight, and Remove only for a copy 0TV itself installed. Sign in with your own Jio account inside the app.
  • Tap the TV picture in My TV to take a fresh screenshot and update that device's private cache; ordinary visits keep reusing the saved still. No timestamp, no Refresh button.
  • App: versionCode 8, minSdk 26. SHA-256 9a2c296d26a1d0f45bb80d7656325f1997556bd379adc490614ff0a2f2c8acdc, 24,626,870 bytes.
  • Tests: 496 pass (324 core, 14 ADB, 158 app). Physical-TV capture/install flows are covered by logic and rendered-screen tests, not verified on a physical TV. Install over rc7 without uninstalling.

0TV 1.0.0-rc7 - TV-frame preview and device cache

Choose a tag to compare

@vio137 vio137 released this 28 Oct 19:04

TV-frame preview and per-device cache

  • Removes the capture timestamp and Refresh button.
  • Shows an animated Android symbol inside a TV frame until the first successful ADB screenshot.
  • Saves that screenshot privately per TV and reuses it across visits and app restarts. Cached devices do not capture again on every visit.
  • Keeps storage/RAM chips and existing App2TV, launcher, DNS and backup features.
  • Failed or protected/all-black captures keep the Android placeholder. Remove animations is respected.

Phone-only update: install over your existing 0TV without uninstalling. No separate TV launcher update is required.

478 automated tests pass (310 core, 14 ADB, 154 app). Layout and animation checked through actual rendered frames. Physical phone-to-TV capture remains unverified. The screenshot is a cached still, not a live view.

0TV 1.0.0-rc6 - Selected-TV screen preview

Choose a tag to compare

@vio137 vio137 released this 28 Oct 18:41

Selected TV, actual screen

My TV now captures a still screenshot over the selected TV's ADB connection, beside its name and model, instead of generic artwork. It captures on entry and on Refresh, shows the phone-local capture time, and never polls in the background.

Captures stay in memory and are cleared when changing TV. Invalid, failed and all-black captures show No capture. Protected video may be hidden. Temporary files on the TV are removed after reading (best effort if the connection drops).

This is not a live stream. The new physical phone-to-TV capture path remains unverified. Automated capture/state tests and fixture-based UI renders pass. App2TV, custom DNS and the bundled launcher are preserved; their earlier hardware-test limits remain.

Install over your existing 0TV phone app. Do not uninstall or clear its data. No separate TV launcher update is needed for this phone-card change.

0TV 1.0.0-rc5: App2TV and the 0TV Home Easter egg

Choose a tag to compare

@vio137 vio137 released this 28 Oct 17:58

App2TV

Install an app on your phone first, then open My TV > App2TV. Pick from the phone's installed apps. 0TV checks Android version, processor support, free space and the TV's existing version, copies the base APK plus any splits, asks the TV's installer to install them, and checks the installed version. Installer failures are explained in plain English. No uninstall, data wipe, downgrade or signature bypass.

Phone apps may not support the remote or run correctly even when installation succeeds. A 64-bit-only app cannot run on a 32-bit TV.

0TV Home Easter egg

On the updated 0TV Home launcher, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right to show a cracked-screen effect. Repeat the sequence to remove it. The effect stays inside the launcher and requires no overlay permission.

Update the phone app without uninstalling it. Reconnect, open My TV > Home screen, choose 0TV Home, then press Use 0TV Home to update the TV launcher. Installing the phone APK alone does not update the TV launcher.

Verification and limits

  • Core: 307 tests pass. Companion: 144 tests pass.
  • Launcher tests pass, including key-event toggles and a byte-identical restored render.
  • The app list and transfer pipeline are covered by automated fixtures. A physical phone-to-TV transfer and real-phone icons have not yet been verified.
  • The effect was rendered in JVM key-event tests, not exercised with a physical remote.
  • Package: app.tvtidy.cleaner, versionCode 5.
  • APK: 24,577,670 bytes.
  • SHA-256: 606b7b4b5e88c91f9b94ab91e2f75ea5f608ccff6b444ce47fef66c00a07e901
  • Original signing certificate retained for both phone app and bundled launcher: 3b5057c1ad574820ca80269cca1c0e798ae439e71f43729f3b7d54ca90fe9729

All rc4 DNS changes remain included. See docs/TESTING.md for scope and docs/GUIDE.md for setup.

0TV 1.0.0-rc4

@vio137 vio137 released this 28 Oct 17:32

Release candidate 1.0.0-rc4 (versionCode 4). Installs over earlier 0TV releases (same signing certificate).

  • Block ads now reads the TV's actual Private DNS mode and server and shows it, separate from a live name-lookup check. "Check the TV again" re-reads it.
  • Turn off returns the TV to Automatic when the saved previous value was itself AdGuard or your own server.
  • New: enter your own DNS-over-TLS server name (Use / Update my server). If the TV cannot resolve names through it, the setting is rolled back. Whether a custom server blocks ads depends on that server.
  • Preview images for 0TV Home and Projectivy; testing badges removed. The Projectivy image is a screenshot from its Google Play listing, credited to Spocky; no reuse licence is claimed.

0TV 1.0.0-rc3 · b16

A calmer Android TV starts on your phone. This is the combined Android phone companion, including the redesigned 0TV Home launcher.

Download and install

Download 0TV-1.0.0-rc3-b16.apk below on an Android 8.0+ ARM64/ARMv7 phone. Open the file to install. Allow installation from your browser/Files app if Android requests it. Keep your existing 0TV app installed when updating to preserve local history.

Project website · Install and use guide · Source and build instructions

Included

  • 0TV mobile branding, author details and motion treatment.
  • Review-first cleanup with backup and restore tools, protected-package guards, remote, app launching and file sending.
  • Exact redesigned 0TV Home asset exercised on the Mi Box 4. Select 0TV Home inside the companion for that design. Simple and the original Dock-style launcher are separate choices.
  • Optional AdGuard Private DNS and separate optional TizenTube Cobalt install.

Read before use

This is a release candidate. The redesigned launcher was checked on a Xiaomi Mi Box 4 running Android 9 for remote focus, navigation, scrolling and installed-app banners. The full phone-side cleanup/restore flow and physical-phone haptics have not all been proven on hardware. Other TVs/firmware can behave differently.

Restore depends on saved records and device checks. Uninstalling the companion can remove local recovery history. Permanently deleted app data cannot be recovered. Restore does not roll back a TizenTube/Cobalt install. DNS filtering is opt-in, uses a third party, and does not block YouTube in-video ads.
