Yap 1.3.1
Yap 1.3.1 — two fixes
Fixed
- "API error: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters…" after signing in with ChatGPT. Settings shows a saved API key in hidden form, and Save could store that hidden text as your key, switching Yap to a key that could never work. The hidden form can no longer be saved, pasted keys are tidied (spaces, quotes, invisible characters) and refused with advice if they contain anything else, a key that was already saved broken is ignored, and if you are signed in with ChatGPT Yap goes back to your plan automatically.
- Couldn't give microphone permission (Yap never appeared in System Settings, Privacy, Microphone). The macOS permission prompt now appears, with fallbacks if it can't, and holding Fn without permission asks again.
Signed and notarised. Download the DMG for your Mac: arm64 for Apple silicon, x86_64 for Intel.
Yap 1.3.0
Yap 1.3.0 — Fn dictation that reads like you typed it
Fixed
- Missing spaces after full stops, stray full stops mid-sentence, lost or duplicated words, and a dropped "Thank you." / "Okay." in Fn dictation.
- Flaky dictation: speech is no longer chopped into fixed 3-second chunks. A short hold is sent whole when you let go; long holds are cut only where you paused.
- Paste reliability: your whole clipboard (including images) is restored, unless you copied something meanwhile; slow Electron and browser apps now paste the right text; clipboard managers skip the dictation.
- Wrong app-type guesses ("Admin" is no longer a DM,
data.jsonis no longer JavaScript).
New
- Reads the few words before your cursor (macOS Accessibility, best effort, never password fields) so capitals and spacing continue naturally. Turn it off with
fn_use_field_contextin~/.yap/prefs.json. - Spoken "new line" / "new paragraph"; British or American spelling (from your Mac's region, or
english_variant). - The formatter can never answer, reword or shorten what you say, even if you dictate "ignore your instructions".
gpt-transcribeis preferred overwhisper-1for live dictation when your key supports it.
Measured: synthetic speech (several voices, room noise, quiet and fast speakers) through the real models: 332 of 336 runs pass, against 7 of 43 for 1.2.0.
Signed and notarised. Download the DMG for your Mac: arm64 for Apple silicon, x86_64 for Intel.
Yap 1.2.0
Yap 1.2.0 — Sign in with ChatGPT
- No API key needed: sign in with your ChatGPT Plus/Pro plan (setup wizard or Settings → Connection). Official OpenAI flow, revocable, stored in the macOS Keychain.
- Speech is recognised on your Mac (Apple Speech) on the plan route — only text goes to OpenAI. Yap asks for Speech Recognition permission once.
- Cleanup, notes and Guide all run on your plan. Speaker labels need an API key (skipped on a plan).
- Clear message + "Manage usage" link when your plan limit is reached.
- Ready for the 26 Feb 2027 retirement of whisper-1 / gpt-4o-*-transcribe (
gpt-transcribelanguageshandled). - Your API key still works; switch any time.
Signed and notarised. Apple Silicon: Yap-1.2.0-arm64.dmg; Intel: Yap-1.2.0-x86_64.dmg.
Yap 1.1.2
Yap 1.1.2
Fixed
- Fn dictation no longer cuts off the end of what you say. Yap keeps listening for a moment after you let go, transcribes the remainder and pastes it. Short holds are transcribed too.
- Fn works first time, including in the tour. The key monitor retries until Input Monitoring is granted, recovers when macOS disables a slow event tap, and queues a press made while the last dictation is finishing. Errors now show in the pebble.
- OpenAI key capture on first run. The key is checked with OpenAI before it is saved, failures say why, and setup opens automatically if no key is readable.
Added
- Copy chat and Save chat in Guide.
Changed
- Shortcuts are written as words (Fn, Cmd+N, Ctrl+Option+Y) everywhere.
- Website redesigned to match the app.
Signed with Developer ID, notarised by Apple and stapled. Apple Silicon: Yap-1.1.2-arm64.dmg. Intel: Yap-1.1.2-x86_64.dmg.
Yap v1.1.1
Yap 1.1.1
Fixes the crash on use (WebKit was being called from background threads), plus a first-run tour and a hotkey to ask Yap about your screen without opening it.
Fixed
- Crash (SIGTRAP) when dictating or using Guide: every window/web-view call now runs on the main thread.
- Crash logs are now complete (
~/.yap/logs/launcher.log), including a Python stack on a native crash. - Guide never sees or discusses Yap's own windows.
- Bundle compatibility: portable numpy build, so macOS 12 and 13 work; hermetic Python environment; Gatekeeper-accepted DMG with the app itself notarised and stapled (opens offline).
Added
- First-run tour (replay from Settings).
- ⌃⌥Y: ask about your screen without opening Yap; the bubble above the pebble shows Listening / Thinking / Speaking.
Install
Apple Silicon Macs: Yap-1.1.1-arm64.dmg. Intel Macs: Yap-1.1.1-x86_64.dmg. macOS 12 or later. No Python or other software needed.

Yap v1.1.0
Yap 1.1.0
- Guide (⌃⌥Space): looks at the window you're in and talks it through as if it wrote it — by voice or text. Share a folder and it searches and reads your files, narrating what it's doing.
- Dock icon, ⌘Q, and Settings → Quit Yap, so Yap can always be found and closed.
- No more phantom text in the live Raw view when you're silent.
- Draggable and resizable pebble/panel; position is remembered.
- Redesigned, accessible UI (light and dark).
- Self-healing models: retired models are replaced automatically; you're only asked if Yap can't decide.
Signed with Developer ID and notarised. Apple Silicon: arm64; Intel: x86_64.
