VCF / vSphere 9.1 HCI Readiness Assessment Tool — Release 9.9.7

Bugfix release v9.9.7 introduces improved Lenovo ThinkSystem handling, a dedicated Lenovo BMC Hardware Security Audit subsystem, interactive BMC credential verification probing, and physical network virtualization offload telemetry.

Key Highlights & Capabilities

  • Improved Lenovo Handling:
    • Automatically deduplicates repeated drive endpoints reported by internal Lenovo ThinkSystem M.2 RAID enablement kits (B545i-2i).
    • Extracts multi-tier CPU cache topology (L1/L2/L3) from Oem.Lenovo.CacheInfo with normalized sizing and associativity.
    • Enhances drive SMART wear, endurance, and operational telemetry across SAS/SATA/NVMe controllers.
    • Adds BIOS TCG TPM 2.0 active status verification and Features-on-Demand (FoD) upgrade key fallback.
  • Dedicated Lenovo BMC Security Audit Subsystem:
    • Full hardware security audit evaluator for Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC / XCC2 / XCC3).
    • Evaluates BMC firmware currency, TLS configuration, physical presence jumpers, network service exposure, password policies, and security posture scoring.
  • Interactive BMC Credential Probing:
    • Web UI session API enables live BMC credential probes with immediate verification and automated session cleanup (DELETE) to protect BMC controller resources.
  • Network Virtualization Offload:
    • Corrects adapter-level SR-IOV Virtual Function capacity aggregation from controller capabilities and network device functions.

  • Source Bundle (Recommended): Distribution-VCF-Readiness.zip
    • Complete source code and offline HCL database.
    • Requires Python 3.9+ standard library only (zero pip dependencies).
    • Extract the archive and launch: python3 vcfr_web.py

VCF Readiness 9.8.2

@johnnicholson-vmw johnnicholson-vmw released this 01 Oct 18:47

This is the first public beta release of VCF Readiness!

The project was born out of conversations with Kalyan Krishnaswamy and Phong Le about "how do we make it easy for customers to reuse hardware for VCF".

It started with HCL validation (checking servers, NICs, CPUs, Server Chassis, Drives) against the VMware HCL, but expanded to known misconfigurations, security hardening checks, health status, and a general purpose inventory tool.

I've taken inspiration from other projects over the years like Spiceworks (who showed me that inventory tooling didn't have to be ugly or painful), the vCommunity hardware project, RVtools, and DPACK (Proving that a simple pre-sales tool can be an anything tool if you try hard enough).

I'd like to thank everyone who's helped get this to the intial release and look froward to feedback!
