This covers two questions:

  • Why is there a # before my route path?
  • Why does my page fail to load when I refresh in production?

Initially, I was just attempting to answer the second question. But the quirks of client-side routing can seem very strange to someone unfamiliar with the reasons why it behaves the way it does, so I tried to go into some detail about the history of client-side routing. Eventually it seemed like that section would be better split off to live elsewhere. Coincidentally, I noticed that we'd had a few people ask about why there was a hash in their routes, which was a more natural home for the history lesson.
