Changing Configuration Override options affects several displays simultaneously

I've got two displays of the same manufacturer and model (LG 29WP60G-B).

While changing any option from Configuration Override/System configuration... group on one of them, same option on the other one is changed at the same time and getting the same value (toggles, display name). It seems like their options are unexpectedly synchronised.

BetterDisplay reports different id values for them (serial, UUID, CGDirectDisplayID) except vendor and model. There is no other issues/conflicts with configuration except this one.

Do you need any extra information?

Affected version: 1.4.15 Build 15141 and 2.2.6 Build 27335.
BTW, I haven't got any update notification since v1.4.15 and just now noticed on GH that there is already v2.2.6. I had to update it manually.

Hi there - yes, System configuration override works on a per vendor/model number basis (as it is noted under the small print for the "Edit the system configuration of this display" option), therefore this is the expected. You can rename the display in-app for differentiation but not system-wise. A solution might be to apply an EDID override to one of the displays (provided you are using Apple Silicon - on Intel the EDID override is also vendor/model based).

App versions v1.4.x don't auto-update to v2.x (they are actually different applications with differing bundle IDs + not all macOS versions supported by v1.4.x is supported by v2.x. I might add one last v1.4.x update to inform users with eligible OS version about the upgrade.

Finally, I pulled it off but it wasn't easy as it could be (Apple M1 Max). There are few insights:

1. I had to change both: vendor and model to make it work (changing model wasn't enough). I don't understand why it can't be just serial?
2. Why I can't edit EDID directly at BetterDisplay?
3. I'd expect to be warned when changing one display system info at BetterDisplay will change the other one and why, and what's the follow up to make it work.
4. Do I understand it correctly that EDID is changed only logically while BetterDisplay is running (i.e. it's not a permanent change)?

Hi,

1. Theoretically changing model only should work. Serial number change does not affect configuration overrides.
2. The feature is not in the app. Maybe in the future. But creating an EDID editor is a separate project in itself and there are already working and well maintained free solutions for that. I plan to maybe add some simple edits like changing timings and some often changed other settings.
3. Well, the explanation is there but if the app detects multiple displays with the same identifiers it should maybe provide more warning about that, you are right. If you add this as an issue, I'll implement it.
4. Yes, it is not a permanent change. You can write the EDID with app version v2.3.0 to the display's permanent memory as well (some displays support this by entering into service mode and enabling EDID write), however that might brick the display if there is any problem with the EDID file or during the operation. You can I think get some cheap HDMI pass-thru dongles that can also accept EDID writes and can survive a bad write as well, maybe that could be a permanent option. I don't have a model recommendation though.
