Summary of discussion

DAYCLI

  • Dr. Denis Suber introduced the requirement for a new BUFR sequence based on the review of the trial phase of DAYCLI, in which 20 Members showed interest in participation.
  • ET-DRC experts will provide the first draft of the new BUFR sequence (start from the existing sequence 3 07 074 and add new elements as required through the review of the trial phase).
  • Team members are invited to give feedback to the proposal; contribution of members whose country participates in the trial phase is especially welcome.
  • Discussion is at: https://github.com/wmo-im/BUFR4/issues/51

GRIB2/BUFR4 tables on code registry (codes.wmo.int)

  • Chair provided the situation of outdated GRIB2/BUFR4 tables on code registry without official status of WMO, including the fact that IWXXM is making reference to a number of tables, some of them are BUFR Tables defined for BUFR versions of METAR/SPECI and TAF and a potential solution would be to move these entries/tables to No.306 Vol. I.3 and codes.wmo.int/49-2 to be maintained by TT-AvData to resolve dependencies.
  • The Secretariat updated the team about the agreement between the WMO Secretariat and UK Met Office over the code registry and indicated that there was no option to delete anything on the registry but the Team could decide to freeze GRIB2/BUFR4 tables saying that they are no longer part of WMO's official resource if it is appropriate; to note, there is no table version control in the code registry.
  • The first step is to find other use cases of GRIB2/BUFR4 tables on codes.wmo.int.
  • Marian and Tom are requested to give some more information about potential use by WCS.
  • Team members are invited to inform if they identify any other use cases.
  • Richard is requested to update the status of code registry.

E-PROFILE BUFR sequences

  • Chair provided updates on the development of E-PROFILE BUFR sequences; new Table B descriptors and entries of existing code tables are part of FT2020-2, and the new sequences remain for FT2021-1.
  • The Secretariat is requested to create a new branch to finalize the validation process.
  • Upon completion of validation, the team will conclude on this issue for inclusion in FT2021-1, separately from other issues.
  • Discussion is at: https://github.com/wmo-im/BUFR4/issues/21

WIGOS Station Identifier

  • Chair provided the analysis of the issue of WSI, including the provisions of the Technical Regulations (WMO-No. 49) and the Manual on WIGOS (WMO-No. 1060).
  • This is a multi-faceted issue but at this moment the team focuses on how to report WSI in BUFR/CREX.
  • The action is to include elements of the existing guidelines in the appropriate parts of Volume I.2 of MoC.
  • Team members (Simon and Jitsuko volunteered but also others!) are invited to post ideas how to do in the Github issue at: https://github.com/wmo-im/BUFR4/issues/50
