Secretariat Updates

Updates on specific activities

  • Standard development for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS): new activity - Dean Lockett (WMO)
    • Dean presented on UAS: this activity comes through an approval by WMO Infrastructure Commission and limitation is use of airspace; outcome from workshop in 2019 was to work towards a demonstration of the systems and their potential contribution to meteorology and to develop the terms of reference for this campaign; the demo will start in 2023; https://community.wmo.int/uas-demonstration; they are working on developing UAS data representation with CF-NetCDF format initially and then translate to BUFR representation from NetCDF. (Jitsuko) Is there an expert team on the demo team? (Dean) there is an ad-hoc sub-group under the JET-ABO to develop the standard formats and there is a WMO committee for organizing the campaign. (Jitsuko) Mariana and Simon can propose these formats to the ET-Data Task Teams, probably next year. (Simon) the approach could be similar to the CF-NetCDF profile for weather radar data (for the NetCDF data format); (Dean) the campaign doesn't require fully adopted data formats to move forward.
  • DAYCLI BUFR sequence: status update
    • (Jitsuko) Sergio provided some sample data, doing final checking of the time period approach to make sure that the proposed sequence can represent all of the existing practices and hopefully this can be approved during FT2022-1. (Sergio) testing with software and also asking for extra samples for the check. (Jitsuko) The branch needs to be updated as soon as possible to reflect latest decisions for decoding.

Recommended practice of Github issue management

  • When a new proposal (issue) is created, the issue is generally assigned to the person who makes the proposal and put in "submitted" status.
  • Once the team agrees to the general approach and decides to go to validation status, chair moves the issue to "in validation" status and the Secretariat creates a branch. If further discussion is necessary, the issue is moved to "in discussion" status.
  • Once the team agrees to the final proposal, asignee consolidates the finalized the proposal in the original post, updates the branch, and post a comment saying "branch updated" with mention to Chair and the Secretariat. (Please do not change issue status.)
  • Chair confirms that the proposal is finalized and the associated branch is updated, and moved the issue to the "validated" status.

Schedule for FT2022-1

  • One 2-hour meeting to confirm schedule: September 13
  • Deadline for submission of proposals: September 30
  • Two 2-hour meetings to review new proposals: October 5-6
  • Two 2-hour meetings to conclude the proposals: November 9-10
  • Deadline for validation (if not completed by the meeting above): December 11
  • One additional meeting to finalize remaining issues if necessary: December 14
  • National Focal Point review: mid-January 2022
  • WMO adoption process: mid-March 2022
