@workavoidance workavoidance released this 20 Sep 21:51

Skrivi Snakk 0.3.2 — Test release

A clearer dictation interface, consistent with Skrivi Lytt.

  • A short first-run introduction and prominent guidance for dictating into other applications.
  • Current shortcuts shown on the main screen; a separate, cancellable shortcut capture dialog.
  • Settings that fit smaller windows; scrolling over controls no longer changes their values.
  • Whisper model names and a table showing model size, availability and active state.
  • Consistent Privacy/About screens and simpler installer licence information.

Use Skrivi-Snakk-0.3.2-windows-x64-setup.exe for normal installation. Quit the existing tray app first. Existing settings and model files are preserved. The ZIP is the portable alternative. The MSIX is for Microsoft Store submission; availability here does not imply Store certification.

These are the exact signed files approved after PC testing, built from 25283f0 in https://github.com/workavoidance/Skrivi-STT/actions/runs/35537489391. Signatures, checksums, automated tests and installer preservation checks passed.

Companion: Skrivi Lytt 0.4.3.

Skrivi Snakk 0.3.0 — Test release

Skrivi Snakk is the speech-to-text app in the Skrivi family. Its orange microphone
complements the speaker in Skrivi Lytt.
Both apps use Test release while real-world testing continues; their version
numbers advance independently. This is not a claim of production or school approval.

Downloads

  • Skrivi-v0.3.0-windows-x64-setup.exe: normal Windows 11 x64 installer,
signed and timestamped by Open Source Developer Jonathan Wright.
  • Skrivi-v0.3.0-windows-x64.zip: portable app containing a signed executable.
  • Skrivi-v0.3.0-windows-x64.msix: unsigned package for the maintainer to
upload to Microsoft Partner Center, not the normal PC installer. Store review
and publication are separate; the live Store listing may still be older.
  • Matching .sha256 files allow download verification.

What changed

  • Consistent Skrivi Snakk name and orange microphone across the app and installer.
  • Companion Lytt link and shortcut guidance in Settings.
  • Safe migration of shortcuts owned by Snakk; existing settings and downloaded
models stay in place. Uninstall also preserves those user files.
  • Signed app, installer and uninstaller, with installation, reinstall and
signature checks on a disposable Windows runner before publication.

Keep Right Ctrl or Left Ctrl + Windows for dictation and Ctrl + Alt +
Space
for Lytt. Avoid assigning Left Ctrl + Left Alt to dictation when using both.

Close the app before upgrading, install, then open Skrivi Snakk from Start.
The first speech-model download requires internet; dictation then runs locally.
Signing verifies the publisher but does not guarantee that SmartScreen will
never display a reputation warning. Please report problems without private text
or student information in GitHub issues.

Skrivi v0.2.0 alpha 4

This alpha adds laptop-friendly push-to-talk shortcuts and enables automatic
startup in the Microsoft Store edition.

Install or update

Download and run Skrivi-v0.2.0-alpha.4-windows-x64-setup.exe below. You can
install it over an earlier website edition. Existing settings and downloaded
speech models are kept.

The installer needs no administrator permission and adds Skrivi to the Start
menu and Windows Installed apps.

This direct installer is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may therefore
show a warning. If you trust this open-source project, choose More info,
then Run anyway. Microsoft signs the separate Store edition after
certification.

What changed

  • Add Left Ctrl + Windows as the recommended laptop push-to-talk shortcut
and Left Ctrl + Left Alt as a fallback while keeping Right Ctrl as the
    default.
  • Delay two-key shortcut activation briefly so ordinary Windows shortcuts with
a third key continue to work normally.
  • Show the selected shortcut in Skrivi's ready status.
  • Support opt-in automatic startup in the Microsoft Store edition using
    Windows' packaged startup-task API.
  • Respect startup choices made by the user or an organisation in Windows
Settings and keep Skrivi's checkbox synchronized with the effective state.

Alpha limitations

  • Windows 11 on x64 processors is the only supported platform in this release.
  • The direct-download binaries are not code-signed and may trigger SmartScreen.
  • Accessibility, repeated-cycle, offline, and broader hardware testing are not
    yet complete.
  • Skrivi is not presented as formally approved for school deployment. Schools
and municipalities must conduct their own review.
  • Very short phrases may still be assigned to the wrong one of the two
automatic languages, and punctuation may be imperfect.

Please report problems using Give feedback in Skrivi's tray menu or through
GitHub Issues.

Skrivi v0.2.0 alpha 3

This alpha improves automatic language detection and dark-mode readability,
and adds a direct way to send feedback from Skrivi.

Install or update

Download and run Skrivi-v0.2.0-alpha.3-windows-x64-setup.exe below. You can
install it over an earlier alpha. Existing settings and downloaded speech
models are kept.

The installer needs no administrator permission and adds Skrivi to the Start
menu and Windows Installed apps.

This alpha is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may therefore show a warning.
If you trust this open-source project, choose More info, then Run anyway.

What changed

  • Automatic language detection now considers only Norwegian and English,
reducing unrelated-language guesses. The language choices are now Automatic,
Norwegian, and English; an existing Multilingual setting moves to Automatic.
  • Status, privacy, and model panels remain readable when Windows uses dark mode
    and translucent palette colours.
  • The floating dictation indicator follows the active Windows theme.
  • Skrivi's orange application mark remains visible in dark mode.
  • The tray menu has a Give feedback action that opens Skrivi's feedback
    page.
  • The release workflow can now also create an unsigned MSIX package for a
Microsoft Store submission. Store availability remains subject to Microsoft's
    certification process.

Alpha limitations

  • Windows 11 on x64 processors is the only supported platform in this release.
  • The binaries are not code-signed and may trigger SmartScreen.

Skrivi v0.2.0 alpha 2

This alpha gives Skrivi's settings a calmer, clearer interface for early test
users. Dictation behaviour and local privacy protections remain unchanged.

Install or update

Download and run Skrivi-v0.2.0-alpha.2-windows-x64-setup.exe below. You can
install it over alpha 1. Existing settings and downloaded speech models are
kept, so the recommended Small model does not need to be downloaded again.

The installer needs no administrator permission and adds Skrivi to the Start
menu and Windows Installed apps.

This alpha is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may therefore show a warning.
If you trust this open-source project, choose More info, then Run anyway.

What changed

  • Clearer status, dictation, and application sections.
  • A compact window suitable for laptop displays, with Save and Cancel always
    available.
  • Helpful explanations that change with the selected dictation language.
  • Simpler model management that shows only relevant actions.
  • A fuller privacy summary, including what Skrivi does not store and what the
receiving application may store or sync.
  • A more useful About page with direct links to the website, source code, and
    third-party licences.
  • Stronger keyboard focus, disabled states, control outlines, high-contrast
    behaviour, and dark-palette support.
  • Complete English and Norwegian Bokmål wording for the redesigned interface.

Alpha limitations

  • Windows 11 on x64 processors is the only supported platform in this release.
  • The binaries are not code-signed and may trigger SmartScreen.
  • Accessibility, repeated-cycle, offline, and broader hardware testing are not
    yet complete.
  • Skrivi is not presented as formally approved for school deployment. Schools
and municipalities must conduct their own review.
  • Whisper may occasionally choose the wrong language for very short phrases or
    produce imperfect punctuation.

The application, installer, and redesigned settings passed automated Windows
CI. The complete interface was also reviewed manually in English and Norwegian
Bokmål. Please report problems through
GitHub Issues.

Skrivi v0.2.0 alpha 1

This is the first installer-backed alpha release of Skrivi, a private local
push-to-talk dictation application for Windows 11.

Install

Download and run Skrivi-v0.2.0-alpha.1-windows-x64-setup.exe below. The
installer needs no administrator permission and adds Skrivi to the Start menu
and Windows Installed apps.

This alpha is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may therefore show a warning.
If you trust this open-source project, choose More info, then Run anyway.

The first launch downloads and verifies the recommended multilingual Small
speech model, approximately 486 MB. Once installed, normal dictation runs
locally without sending audio or transcripts to Skrivi or a cloud service.

Included

  • English and Norwegian Bokmål interfaces.
  • Automatic, English, Norwegian, and multilingual speech modes.
  • Right Ctrl or F6 through F12 push-to-talk keys.
  • Windows microphone selection and disconnected-device recovery.
  • Verified local Tiny, Base, Small, and Medium speech models.
  • Download, verification, switching, import, removal, progress, and cancellation.
  • Per-user installer, normal uninstall, optional desktop shortcut, and optional
    automatic startup.
  • Portable Windows ZIP for advanced users.

The installer has passed automated Windows CI and manual installation,
dictation, settings-preservation, automatic-startup, and uninstall checks on one
Windows 11 computer. Please report problems through
GitHub Issues.
