AI Helper in Action: Building a Bilingual Wiki for an Open-Source Project from Scratch

← Back to Wiki Home · 🌐 中文

This article is not a product manual — it's a real-world field report. It documents how AI Helper, an open-source browser extension, built, bilingualized, cross-platform synced, and maintained the Wiki of its own project.

From generating 8 Chinese doc pages, to translating them into English, to syncing to Gitee, writing automation scripts, and revising the configuration docs against the latest source code — zero hand-written Markdown throughout. Everything was done by AI Helper in the browser, working together with a local Agent.

This isn't a demo video; it's a real execution log. Here's the timeline.

1. From Zero: Generating an 8-Page Chinese Wiki

Task: The GitHub Wiki was still an empty page; a full documentation set needed to be written based on the project source.

What AI Helper did:

  1. Read the project — went through docs/zh/DOCUMENTATION.md, agent/README.zh-CN.md, CHANGELOG.md, manifest.json, package.json, and cross-checked against the src/ source code;
  2. Distilled source material — organized a 42KB draft (616 lines, structured into 12 chapters) as the documentation base;
  3. Generated the docs — produced 8 Chinese Wiki pages: Home / Quick Start / Core Features / Built-in Tools / Agent Service / Configuration / Architecture / FAQ, 1,834 lines in total;
  4. Published — created the Home page on the web to enable the Wiki repo, then git clone and pushed files directly.

Highlight: during the process it discovered that the original docs were missing 3 tools (debug_page, handle_dialog, knowledge_*) and proactively added them — the AI doesn't just copy content, it notices "docs and code are out of sync."

2. Bilingualization: 8 More English Pages

Task: Add an English version without conflicting with the Chinese one.

What AI Helper did:

  1. Compared options — evaluated three layouts (separate slugs / single-page bilingual folding / renaming to make way), and chose the non-conflicting separate slug approach (Home-EN, Quick-Start-EN, …);
  2. Generated English pages — produced 8 -EN pages, each with a language-switch banner at the top;
  3. Synced navigation — made the sidebar bilingual, with cross-links pointing to the matching language version.

3. Cross-Platform Sync to Gitee

Task: Sync the GitHub Wiki to the Gitee Wiki.

What AI Helper did:

  1. Pushed — via git@gitee.com:xiweicheng/ai-helper.wiki.git, all 16 pages synced (8 Chinese + 8 English);
  2. Tested the differences — discovered and handled 3 Gitee-vs-GitHub differences: _Sidebar/_Footer are not recognized by Gitee (shown as normal pages, so removed), the sidebar is alphabetically sorted without grouping, and anchor URLs don't auto-scroll (only in-page link clicks scroll).

4. Automation: A Sync Script + an npm Entry

Task: Turn "sync to Gitee" from manual work into a single command.

What AI Helper did:

  1. Wrote the script — sync-wiki-to-gitee.sh: mktemp creates a temp dir → clones both ends → rsync --delete syncs (excluding _Sidebar/_Footer) → commits & pushes only when there are changes → trap auto-cleans the temp dir;
  2. Fixed a macOS gotcha — worked around a bash 3.2.57 bug: under set -u, $VAR followed by a full-width parenthesis merges the first byte into the variable name (WORKDIR unbound variable), fixed by wrapping all references in ${VAR} braces;
  3. Added an npm entry — added npm run sync:wiki to package.json, so one command does the whole sync.

5. Revising the Configuration Docs Against the Latest Source

Task: The user suspected the Configuration page was incomplete and asked to verify it against the latest code.

What AI Helper did:

  1. Checked page by page — opened options.html + src/options/*.js + constants.js + side_panel.html and compared one by one;
  2. Found structural errors — the docs said 9 tabs, but there are actually 7: image recognition / streaming output / chat are not standalone tabs, and the entire Knowledge Base (RAG) tab was missing;
  3. Corrected config ranges — ReAct loop 10–1000, API timeout 1–10 min, loop timeout 1–120 min, tool timeout 1–30 min, and noted "clarify timeout / retry / pre-filter removed from UI";
  4. Fixed the shortcut table — Alt+Ctrl/Cmd+↑↓ to jump to top/bottom (not Alt+Shift as the old doc said), and added 6 missing shortcuts;
  5. Synced both languages — rewrote both versions together and verified rendering and navigation page by page in the browser.

6. What Capabilities Power These Scenarios

Scenario AI Helper capability used
Reading source, distilling material Web content extraction + local Agent file reading
Generating / translating docs Long-context chat + multi-session management
Verifying pages in the browser Page control: open tabs, click, scroll, screenshot analysis
git push / clone / writing scripts Local Agent terminal commands (3-tier security)
Spotting docs/code mismatch Tool pre-filtering + 3-tier reflection QA
Writing automation scripts Code generation + file I/O + command execution

7. Conclusion

This Wiki is itself a work of AI Helper.

If you want an AI that doesn't just "chat well" but actually "gets things done" — writing docs, filling forms, managing files, running commands, maintaining open-source projects — give it a try:
