Noah for Tinkerers is the open-source, bring-your-own-key build of Noah — a desktop agent that fixes your computer in plain English, with a safety harness around every action. You bring an Anthropic API key; Noah talks to Claude directly from your machine. No account, no backend.

Highlights

  • Bring your own key, no backend — your key stays on your machine; the only thing that leaves is the conversation with Claude.
  • A real safety harness — read-only diagnostics first, an explicit plan, approval gates on risky commands, and a hard-deny floor that permanently refuses catastrophic operations (wiping your home folder or keychains, erasing a disk) — even if asked. How the harness works ›
  • Every command explains itself — Noah can't propose a shell command without a plain-English reason, enforced at the schema level.
  • 26 playbooks — Markdown remediation procedures (disk recovery, network diagnostics, printer repair, and more). Drop in your own; no rebuild, no plugin API.
  • Monochrome, technical UI and the wrench mark — the open build's own identity.
  • AGPL-3.0, built in public.

Install

  • macOS — .dmg (universal, Apple Silicon + Intel)
  • Windows — .msi / .exe (x64)
  • Linux — .AppImage

Then open Settings, paste an sk-ant- key, and tell Noah what's broken. Don't trust a binary? Read every line or build it yourself — see CONTRIBUTING.
