Release list
v1.0.1
Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii), statically recompiled to run natively on Windows.
This release contains no game data. You need your own copy of the game as a disc image: USA (RENE8P), Europe (RENP8P) or Japan (RENJ8P); ISO, RVZ, WIA or WBFS. Unzip, start BlackKnightRecomp.exe and select the image in the file dialog, wherever it is on your PC. The game data is installed next to the exe.
What's new in v1.0.1
- European and Japanese discs supported. One exe plays all three releases and picks the right one from your disc. Each region keeps its own save data.
- Black screen under Proton / Steam Deck fixed. The game's shaders now compile under Proton, and the zip ships them precompiled. Tested with Proton Experimental, 10.0 and 9.0; not yet confirmed on a real Steam Deck (reports welcome).
- Tilt the Wii Remote with the right stick. Hold the stick to tilt; it levels out when released. Needed for sections like reflecting the sunbeam in Crystal Cave.
- Problems with the graphics driver are now logged clearly in
BlackKnightRecomp.log.
Known limitations
- Changing the internal resolution or texture pack restarts the game.
- At 60 FPS a full jump is about 2.5% higher than at 30 FPS (part of the original movement code runs per frame; left as-is so the game's logic is unchanged).
- Under Proton 10.0, shaders that are not in the bundled cache may show wrong colours; Proton Experimental or 9.0 are recommended.
See the README for controls and settings.
v1.0.0
Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii), statically recompiled to run natively on Windows. The first public release.
This release contains no game data. You need your own copy of the USA version (RENE8P) as a disc image: ISO, RVZ, WIA or WBFS. The European release (RENP8P) is not supported yet.
Getting started
- Unzip
BlackKnightRecomp-v1.0.0-windows-x64.zipanywhere. - Start
BlackKnightRecomp.exe. On the first start it asks for your disc image: select it in the file dialog, wherever it is on your PC. You don't need to copy or move it anywhere. - The game data is installed from the image (about a minute, 3.5 GB). After that the image is not needed.
- Click Play.
Requires Windows 10 or later (x64) and a Direct3D 11 GPU.
Features
- Controller play: XInput controllers and the keyboard stand in for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, with motion synthesised for sword swings. Controllers 2-4 become extra Wii Remotes for Battle mode.
- Configurable bindings for the controller, keyboard and mouse.
- Launcher on every start: settings, a game file check, and repair or reinstall from the disc image.
- In-game settings overlay on the controller's View button or F1. The game keeps running underneath; most settings apply immediately.
- Higher internal resolution, 16:9 widescreen and anisotropic filtering.
- 60 FPS option. Game logic still runs at its fixed 60 Hz, so game speed and timers stay correct.
- Dolphin-format HD texture packs and texture dumping.
- Wii HOME Menu (View + Start), and the Wii Remote speaker sounds played on the PC.
See the README for controls and all settings.
Known limitations
- Changing the internal resolution or texture pack restarts the game.
- At 60 FPS a full jump is about 2.5% higher than at 30 FPS, because part of the original player movement code runs per rendered frame. Left as-is so as not to change the game's logic.
- The
README.mdandgame\ABOUT_THIS_FOLDER.txtin this zip say "PAL"; the supported disc is the USA version (RENE8P).
