@60plus 60plus released this 11 Oct 12:05

DeckyCache 0.4.8

Choose whether cache covers entire selected drives or specific folders. Installation and update writes no longer allocate new cache blocks, and the final Other cached data tile explains occupancy outside the game list.

Compatibility

SteamOS Stable only. Beta, Preview and Main are not supported.

Requirement This release
Tested SteamOS PC 3.8.28, build 20260922.1, NVIDIA x86-64
Required kernel 6.18.50-valve2-1-neptune-618-gc7289a96b14d
Library filesystem Separate ext4 data partitions
Tested Decky Loader 3.2.10

The kernel bundle is unchanged from 0.4.7. No kernel rebuild or on-device compilation is required.

Changes

  • Cache scope: choose Entire selected drives or Selected folders. Add Steam libraries or browse for folders across enabled drives.
  • Write-around: copying, installation and Steam update writes go to the original HDD without allocating new cache blocks. Cached overlaps remain coherent.
  • Other cached data: always the last tile, using the disk-and-rocket icon. It accounts for blocks outside the current game list without counting Small fragments twice.
  • Folder controls: added spacing between selected folders and the Add folder action.
  • Preservation: changing scope does not remount libraries or clear existing cache. Compatible built-in plugin updates retain the mounted cache and tracking IDs.

What the scope choice means

Folder mode controls read admission, not whether a game is running. Reading selected files for copying, unpacking or verification can still populate cache.
Some direct or asynchronous reads cannot be assigned to a directory and bypass cache in folder mode.
The engine has 32 class slots per volume, shared by game tracking and selected folder roots. A new folder is refused if no required slot remains.

Previously cached data is retained. A large Other cached data tile can include data saved by older versions.
Use Clear cache if you want to discard all cached copies; the games on the HDD and the prepared SSD filesystem remain intact.

Install or update

Download the attached DeckyCache plugin ZIP, not the source-code archive.
Enable Developer mode in Decky settings and use Install Plugin from ZIP File or Install Plugin from URL.

For an existing installation with the current updater, close games and finish Steam downloads, then use Check for updates in DeckyCache.
Confirm Decky's installer; the plugin reloads automatically.
Cache preservation requires the compatible built-in updater. The old updater in 0.4.5 or earlier and manual ZIP replacement can rebuild cache once.

Validation

A native Decky update to the development build preserved occupied cache bytes, the library mount and all 31 installed Steam game entries.
Folder selection applied online without remounting or clearing cache. Isolated ext4 checks covered write admission, selected/excluded reads, cache hits, overwrites and atomic replacement.

After a normal PC restart, a 90-second MOUSE loading/gameplay observation measured 1.05 GiB from cache and 69 MiB from HDD.
Approximately 94% of the measured storage-read bytes came from cache, with matching physical NVMe reads and zero cache errors.
This confirms retained cache and real NVMe reads for that sample. It is not a loading-time benchmark or a measurement of RAM reads.

A real Steam download/update was not run for this release; file-update coherence was checked with controlled writes.

DeckyCache 0.4.7

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 10 Oct 22:49

DeckyCache 0.4.7

Non-Steam games added to Steam can now appear in Cached games, using the names and artwork already set in Steam, including artwork from SteamGridDB.

Compatibility

SteamOS Stable only. Beta, Preview and Main are not supported.

Requirement This release
Tested SteamOS PC 3.8.28, build 20260922.1, NVIDIA x86-64
Required kernel 6.18.50-valve2-1-neptune-618-gc7289a96b14d
Library filesystem Separate ext4 data partitions
Tested Decky Loader 3.2.10

The kernel bundle is unchanged from 0.4.6. No kernel rebuild or on-device compilation is required.

Changes

  • Detects non-Steam shortcuts whose executable is inside a selected library partition.
  • Uses the shortcut's game folder for Open CAS attribution, alongside regular Steam installations.
  • Reuses custom Steam artwork for both Steam games and shortcuts, with alternate image and standard-cover fallbacks.
  • Preserves existing cache data, folder tracking and Steam library mounts during a compatible built-in update.

What appears in Cached games

A shortcut appears only after its folder has attributed cached data. Entries below 16 MiB are under Small fragments.
Simply launching a game does not guarantee a new entry: Linux may serve those reads from RAM.
Previously unclassified data is not counted retroactively; subsequent storage I/O can attribute it without clearing cache.

Tracking remains limited to 32 distinct installation folders per cached volume.
Shortcuts that open an external launcher without exposing the game's executable path are not attributed.
All folders on the selected partition still use the block cache, including data not assigned to a game.

Install or update

Download the attached DeckyCache plugin ZIP, not the source-code archive.
Enable Developer mode in Decky settings and install through Install Plugin from ZIP File or Install Plugin from URL.

For an existing installation with the current updater, close games and finish Steam downloads, then use Check for updates in DeckyCache.
Confirm Decky's installer. The plugin reloads automatically.

Cache preservation requires the compatible built-in updater. Updating through the old updater in 0.4.5 or earlier, or replacing the ZIP manually, can still rebuild cache once.
Original games remain on the HDD.

Validation

A native Decky update to the development build preserved cache occupancy, all existing tracking IDs and all 31 installed Steam game entries.
Five real non-Steam shortcuts were detected. Blood's existing custom Steam artwork loaded successfully.

A controlled 1 MiB read of a Blood game file was served entirely from NVMe and attributed to Blood, with no original-HDD read.
This was a diagnostic read, not a gameplay benchmark. Existing Steam game-update coherence behavior is unchanged.

Shortcut parsing and path-selection checks, updater/lifecycle checks and TypeScript typecheck/build passed.

DeckyCache 0.4.6

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 10 Oct 17:39

DeckyCache 0.4.6

The built-in updater now keeps cached data and Steam library mounts connected while Decky replaces the plugin.
This fixes cache rebuilding and installed games disappearing from Steam after a plugin update.

Compatibility

SteamOS Stable only. Beta, Preview and Main are not supported.

Requirement This release
Tested SteamOS PC 3.8.28, build 20260922.1, NVIDIA x86-64
Required kernel 6.18.50-valve2-1-neptune-618-gc7289a96b14d
Library filesystem Separate ext4 data partitions
Tested Decky Loader 3.2.10

Changes

  • The storage worker and Open CAS binaries have an independent runtime outside the directory replaced by Decky.
  • Compatible updates keep the same mounted cache devices, cached blocks, selected drives and master switch state.
  • The worker adopts the new code between operations without stopping the storage service or unmounting libraries.
  • Writes continue through Open CAS, so changes to original files remain coherent with cached data.
  • Cancelling the installer keeps caching unchanged. If an incomplete installation leaves the plugin absent, the worker returns libraries to direct HDD access after a grace period.
  • An update that changes the active cache engine or cannot accept the cache handoff is refused before storage is changed.

Install or update

Download the attached DeckyCache plugin ZIP, not the source-code archive.
Enable Developer mode in Decky settings and install through Install Plugin from ZIP File or Install Plugin from URL.

For later compatible updates, close games and finish Steam downloads, then use Check for updates inside DeckyCache.
Confirm Decky's installer. The plugin reloads automatically and retains your cache switch state.

Preservation requires the new updater on both sides. Updating from 0.4.5 or older through its old updater can still rebuild cache once.
Manual ZIP replacement does not use the preservation handoff.
If Steam lost the installed-game list after an earlier update, re-add the existing library in Steam Storage; do not format the HDD or reinstall the games.

Validation

A native Decky installation from one development build to the next preserved the mounted library and all 31 installed-game entries throughout the operation.
Cache occupancy remained populated, and reading GRID after the update increased cache hits from 2 to 21.
The storage worker adopted the new runtime without a PC restart.

A disposable file on the selected library was written, overwritten and atomically replaced.
Each version matched both the cached filesystem read and a direct read from the original HDD.
This is a storage-coherence check, not an end-to-end Steam game download/update test.

Focused updater/lifecycle checks and TypeScript typecheck/build passed.

DeckyCache 0.4.5

Choose a tag to compare

@60plus 60plus released this 10 Oct 16:55

DeckyCache 0.4.5

DeckyCache adds a master switch and a GitHub updater that selects releases for the running kernel.

Compatibility

SteamOS Stable only. Beta, Preview and Main are not supported.

Requirement This release
Tested SteamOS PC 3.8.28, build 20260922.1, NVIDIA x86-64
Required kernel 6.18.50-valve2-1-neptune-618-gc7289a96b14d
Library filesystem Separate ext4 data partitions
Tested Decky Loader 3.2.10

Changes

  • Enable DeckyCache turns caching on or bypasses reads to the HDD while retaining valid cached blocks and drive selections.
  • Switching OFF and ON keeps cached game entries. Writes while OFF invalidate affected blocks, so Steam updates do not leave stale cached data.
  • Check for updates finds a newer stable GitHub release with modules for exactly the running kernel.
  • The updater verifies the ZIP and bundled modules, then opens Decky's installer. Decky reloads the plugin automatically.
  • The panel and updater remain available if no cache module matches the kernel.
  • Extra spacing separates the master switch from the update button.

Original games stay on the HDD. There is no kernel rebuild, pinning or full-game copy.

Install or update

Download the attached DeckyCache plugin ZIP, not GitHub's source-code archives.
In Decky settings, enable General > Developer mode, then use Developer > Install Plugin from ZIP File
or Install Plugin from URL.

If the installed version already has the updater, close games and finish Steam downloads, then choose
Check for updates > Update to 0.4.5 and confirm Decky's installer.
Reopen the plugin and enable caching when ready. Update preparation returns libraries to direct HDD access,
so cache stays off after installation or a cancelled installer and may refill when enabled again.
A normal OFF/ON toggle preserves valid blocks.

The ZIP, SHA256SUMS and deckycache-update.json are attached. The JSON file lets the plugin verify kernel compatibility.

Validation

The development build was installed through Decky's native installer without a PC restart.
On the test PC, the OFF/ON switch preserved GRID's 136 MiB of attributed cached data and its mounted library;
the owner confirmed that the game remained listed. GitHub checks succeeded from Decky's embedded Python.
The final runtime matches that build, with only release version metadata changed.

TypeScript typecheck/build and focused updater, recovery and lifecycle checks passed.
An end-to-end Steam game download/update remains unverified; earlier storage checks covered writes and atomic replacement.

DeckyCache 0.4.4

@60plus 60plus released this 10 Oct 16:07

DeckyCache 0.4.4

Compatibility

Tested SteamOS: 3.8.28, build 20260922.1 (NVIDIA PC).

This ZIP includes Open CAS 26.09.0.1102.release modules for exactly:

6.18.50-valve2-1-neptune-618-gc7289a96b14d

Supported library sources are ext4 data partitions on separate, non-system drives.
The kernel is not rebuilt or replaced. A different kernel needs a matching bundle.

SSD/NVMe block caching for SteamOS PC using Open CAS. Games stay on the original HDD,
and writethrough keeps game writes and updates on that drive.

  • Simple cache-drive format/reuse controls and independent switches for library partitions.
  • Persistent cache across clean restarts.
  • Cached games with Steam artwork, names and partial cache sizes.
  • Small fragments collapsed separately, compact information dialogs and section dividers.
  • Clear all cache without formatting the NVMe or deleting games.
  • Shutdown ordering for the tested NVIDIA SteamOS setup.
  • Illustrated installation and setup guide.

Install

Download DeckyCache-0.4.4.zip from this release.

Enable Decky Loader settings → General → Developer mode.
Then open Developer → Install Plugin from ZIP File → Browse and select the ZIP,
or paste the attached ZIP's direct download link into Install Plugin from URL.
If the link requires signing in, install the downloaded file.

Choose the attached plugin ZIP, not the automatically generated source-code archives.

A selected partition is cached as a whole. No pinning, folder filtering or per-game clear is included.
Game sizes are partial attribution. A clean shutdown is required for cache reuse;
invalid state causes a cold rebuild.

GRID and DiRT 3 ran on the test PC. Normal restart preserved cached data;
GRID produced attributed cache hits and physical NVMe reads after reboot.
Storage-level update coherence was checked on disposable images.
An end-to-end Steam download/update remains unverified.

The plugin runtime matches the tested 0.4.4-dev build; this release changes the version metadata,
packaging and documentation.
