King's Field Enhanced v0.1.0 pre-release 3
Third pre-release of King's Field Enhanced. Play in English or Japanese from either disc, a Classic mode, item descriptions, and a smarter map.
Updating: unzip over your old folder (or into a new one and move the data folder across). Saves, settings and mods in %APPDATA%\KingsField\SLPS00017 carry over. Your old data folder is moved to data\en automatically on the first launch.
New
English or Japanese, from either disc
- The first launch now accepts the original Japanese disc as well as one with the English patch. With the Japanese disc, the game offers to add English by downloading the translator's own v1.0 patch, or by using the patch file if you choose it or drop it on the exe. Nothing translated ships with the project.
- Switch languages during play with the new Language row in the game's Options menu, or in F1 > Settings > Language. Menus, item names and the font change at once. Saves work in both languages.
- Have a patched disc and want Japanese too? Add your Japanese disc image in F1 > Settings > Language.
Classic mode
- A switch at the top of F1 > Settings plays the game as originally shipped: 4:3 at 320x240, 20 fps, polygon wiggle, warped textures and dithering, with no added lighting, run key, bug fixes, automap, stats or quick saves.
- Your own settings are untouched and come back when you turn it off.
Item descriptions
- The item panel in menus and shops now says what an item does: how much a herb heals and what it cures, what keys and quest items are for, and equipment effects the stats don't show (Mist Crown regeneration, the Blood Mask curse, sword magic and its requirements, Moon Charm darkness immunity and so on).
- The effects are taken from the game's own rules, so the numbers match what actually happens. You can turn them off in Settings > Interface.
Map
- Chasms (pits and trenches where a fall is fatal, like the ones under Floor 2's bridges) are drawn hatched grey instead of looking like corridors.
- Harp bridges are marked in teal: an outline while lowered, solid while raised.
- Every person is named on hover, with their role, from the Mirror of Truth profiles. Newly named: Juedds Kross, Watts Virgil, Heinz Ruhart, Ozzy Ranvalgve, Miria, the Forest Dragon, Reinhardt III and the Dark Magician.
- With the enemy cheat on, enemies that carry an item have a gold ring. Hover one to see the drop, even before it wakes up.
- The music keeps playing while the full map pauses the game. The option is in Settings > Map.
Gameplay
- Keys are used automatically: interacting with a lock whose key you carry unlocks it, with the unlock sound. Settings > Gameplay, on by default.
- Two optional fixes for bugs in the original game (Settings > Gameplay, on by default): enemies now fall after hitting a ceiling mid-jump, and some sounds get their intended stereo volume.
Fixed
- Using a key could read invalid data in the original code.
- Cutscene data is read with bounds checks.
Under the hood
- Merged the latest sushi-shi/kings-field-decomp changes (24 commits), including its language support and checked C++ media decoders.
Known limitations
- Still a pre-release, mostly tested on the first two floors. Please report problems with
kf.logfrom%APPDATA%\KingsField\SLPS00017, and a quick save of the spot if it's visual. - Item names in the menus themselves can't be changed yet (the translation draws them from word fragments).
Built on sushi-shi/kings-field-decomp; menus, mods and console inspired by Verdite2; English translation by John Osborne (HwitVlf). You still need your own King's Field (Japan) disc image, Japanese or with the English patch applied: see the README.

King's Field Enhanced v0.1.0 pre-release 2
Second pre-release of King's Field Enhanced. Mostly visual fixes you'll notice at high resolutions and frame rates, plus quality-of-life features for gear and the map.
Updating: unzip over your old folder (or into a new one and move the data folder across). Saves, settings and mods in %APPDATA%\KingsField\SLPS00017 carry over.
New
Equipment stats
- The item panel in menus and shops now lists what a weapon, armor piece or accessory adds (Slash, Chop, Stab, Holy, Fire, Poison, Dark, and power or magic where it changes), in the game's own font.
- On the equip screens, each row shows your current total next to the total with the highlighted item: green if better, red if worse. Highlighting Remove shows what you'd lose.
Full map (M)
- Pauses the game while open (Settings > Map, on by default; turn it off to walk with the map open).
- Scroll to zoom towards the cursor, drag to move, right-click to reset.
- Point at a marker to see what it is: warp destinations, fountains (full or dry), doors, save points, item names and chest contents (with those cheats on), and people by name (Light, Gill, Basque Crize, Erik, Rally Kelvim, Oarman and more, as their own dialogue names them).
- New cheat option: which key opens a locked door or chest.
- Map labels use the English translation's item names (Deceased's Key, Light Family Key, Magician's Map and so on).
Fixed
- Black triangles and slivers at the screen edges, especially in widescreen and when looking up or down. The PlayStation threw away floors and walls that reached behind the camera or were too big for its GPU; they are now clipped and drawn properly, and the floor right around you is always drawn.
- Distant floors, walls and models shimmering with black specks as the camera moves. Neighbouring pieces of the level no longer leave pixel-sized cracks between them, and models no longer jitter internally.
- Enemies, NPCs, doors and projectiles looked like they ran at a lower frame rate than the camera. With frame smoothing on, they now move and turn smoothly between the game's 20 Hz updates (walk and attack animations themselves still step at 20 Hz).
- The mouse is captured again automatically when you close the F1 overlay or the full map.
Known limitations
- Still a pre-release, tested mainly on the first floors.
You still need your own King's Field (Japan) disc image with the English patch applied: see the README.
