Umbra 1.13.1
Changed
- A cleaner update button. The Update button in Settings now shows just the version it brings (
Umbra v1.13.1), and while it downloads, a thin loading line fills under it instead of a percentage. The line also shows with a Windows contrast theme.
Fixed
- The add-to-group menu opens where you click. In My widgets, the menu from + Group (or a group badge) opened far to the left, and the card cut off its first entries. It now opens right under the button, shows every group, and opens upward near the bottom of the window. The Install from menu in Browse is fixed the same way.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will warn until code signing is set up (#9).
Umbra 1.13.0
Added
- Run a script as administrator. In Settings > My widgets > Script Runner > Your scripts, a script can now be set to Run as administrator, for things like restarting a service, editing the hosts file, flushing DNS or
winget upgrade --all. Windows asks for permission with its own administrator prompt on every run (it names Windows PowerShell), and the output shows up live in the widget like any other script. Stop and the time limit work too. Such a script only ever runs when you click it yourself: never on a timer, at startup or from automation. It can't also be set to keep running. Script Runner 1.3.1 marks these scripts with anadmintag and shows "Cancelled" when you say No.
Fixed
- The portable zip extracts correctly everywhere. Its folders were stored with Windows backslashes, which some unzip tools turned into flat files named
Umbra\Umbra.exe.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will warn until code signing is set up (#9).
Umbra 1.12.0
Added
- Scripts that keep running. A script you add in Settings > My widgets > Script Runner can now be set to Keeps running, for things like an SSH tunnel, a dev server or a file watcher. It has no time limit, shows "Running since 14:03" with a Start/Stop button, and can start automatically and restart if it stops. The tray lists running scripts so you can stop them from there, and they always stop when Umbra exits. You can also pick a folder to start in, and Browse accepts a Windows shortcut (
.lnk) and fills in its program, arguments and folder for you. New users get Start from an example in the Add script form. - Script Runner 1.2.0. Start and Stop for scripts that keep running, live output while a script runs, a Stop button for long runs, the last 10 runs under Earlier runs, a Copy button for the output, and an optional toast when a script fails. The built-in example commands are gone, so every row is your own and can be deleted. Some of this needs Umbra 1.12.0.
- Hearth can ask to show notifications. The first time you click Hearth after pairing, Umbra asks whether it may show notifications: Allow, Not now or Don't ask again. With Allow, a partner's "thinking of you" tap arrives as a Windows toast (Hearth 1.5.0). Umbra only asks right after you click the widget yourself, and it never overrides a choice you made in Settings.
- For widget authors:
umbra.requestNotifications()asks for that permission after a click, andumbra.stop(id)andumbra.commandOutput(id)stop a script and read its live output. See the widget SDK.
Changed
- Zoom moved to Settings > General, and the Settings pages are centered in the window, so they no longer hug the left edge when the window is wide.
Fixed
- Light themes are readable again. With Paper, Sakura or Solarized Light, parts of Settings (the sidebar, Home and Browse, menus, dropdowns) and several widgets (Countdowns, Minesweeper, Now Playing, S&P 500, Crypto, FX Rates, Daily Quote, Prayer Times, Tracker) showed dark text on black. They now follow the theme. The default dark look is unchanged.
- Countdowns and Tracker buttons have their hover highlight back.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will warn until code signing is set up (#9).
Umbra 1.11.0
Added
- Add your own scripts to Script Runner in Settings. Open Settings > My widgets > Script Runner and press Add script: give it a name, pick PowerShell, Python, Bash or any program, then point it at a script file (with a Browse button) or type the code right there. Add arguments, a time limit and a description if you like. Saving approves exactly that command, and it shows up in the widget at once, by its name. Edit or delete scripts from the same list. They are kept apart from the widget, so updating Script Runner keeps them. Script Runner 1.1.0 lists your scripts first, and Script to run automatically now takes a script's name.
- Zoom in Settings. A Zoom control at the bottom of the Settings sidebar goes from 50 % to 200 % in 5 % steps. Ctrl+= / Ctrl+- / Ctrl+0 and Ctrl+wheel work too, and Settings remembers your zoom.
- For widget authors:
permissions.userScripts,umbra.commands()andumbra.onCommandsChange()let a widget offer scripts the user writes in Settings. Only Settings can add or approve one, never the widget or automation. See "The user's own scripts" in the widget SDK.
Changed
- Hearth 1.4.0 has a preview picture, uses the bundled Nunito font, and its Overview strip fits at the default size.
- Pomodoro's timelapse card is simpler, the timelapse records the whole session (including added minutes), and the ring is centred.
Fixed
- Hearth: the Offline chip on the Overview strip is readable again.
- Approve and Revoke for a widget's commands and camera in Settings now also work on a second copy of the widget.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will warn until code signing is set up (#9).
Umbra 1.10.0
Added
- Settings has a Home page. Settings opens on a new landing page, and rarely used settings are folded away until you need them.
Changed
- Pomodoro 2.2.0 has a new look. Round play and pause controls, a reset button while paused, a slimmer ring, and a tidier timelapse card with a status pill and a red dot while recording. After a session ends, you can still see its video being made.
- The update button says what it does. It now shows the version it updates to, and what a click will do.
Fixed
- The Pomodoro webcam timelapse works. Every start used to fail with "Click Start on the widget to begin the timelapse", even after a real click. The first start now asks for camera approval, then records.
- Umbra could crash when a recording started. Work meant for the main window thread could run on a background thread. It now always runs on the main one.
- Approval dialogs are readable on scaled displays. At 200 % the camera prompt, command prompt, install review and confirmation boxes cut off their text and buttons.
- Quick Notes: the caret stays in place after the first typed character, Tab inserts 4 spaces, and bullets are Obsidian style.
- Smaller fixes: selected text is readable on an unfocused widget,
umbractl captureon a hidden tab fails right away and names the command to run, and some labels are more accurate.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will warn until code signing is set up (#9).
Umbra 1.9.0
Umbra 1.9.0
A big one: a calmer Settings panel, one global lock for moving widgets, install-from-anywhere, a welcome tour, a built-in webcam timelapse and a new couples widget.
Added
- Welcome tour. Three slides on first run, offered once to existing users, replayable from About and the tray ("Welcome tour").
- Install widgets from a folder, a
.zip, a.umbrawidgetfile or an HTTPS link, including double-clicking a.umbrawidget. Everything is checked and shown in a review box before anything is installed; a widget that asks for access always needs your click. - Hearth, a widget for two people on two PCs: pair once with a code, then add copies as Overview (names, days together, milestones), tap "thinking of you", a shared drawing Board and a Pet. Runs through a small relay you host; see
tools/umbra-relay. - Webcam timelapse built in (Pomodoro can record your session; a camera approval is asked first and never granted by tools).
- Pomodoro 2.x: a Windows Focus style session with breaks, skip, +5 minutes and a daily tally.
- 12 new themes (9 dark, 3 light).
- Update now button in the sidebar and an "automatic updates" option.
- Calendar glance look-ahead from 1 day to 1 month. Quick Notes live Markdown editing. To Do is more reliable to edit.
- Prayer Times: city lookup by coordinates, a clear first-run setup screen and automatic method.
- Developer tools:
umbractl validate, packanddev, a documented widget package format, a developer tutorial and cookbook, andumbra.setTabIconso a widget copy can suggest its group tab icon. - A website with the catalog and docs.
Changed
- One global lock. "Arrange widgets" replaces edit mode and the per-widget lock. Widgets stay put until you turn it on. Snapping while arranging happens only while Shift is held (changeable in Settings).
- My widgets is tidier: Active first, "Not enabled" below, a filter box, a group strip with a badge instead of a dropdown, one notifications control per card, and advanced options folded away.
- Settings: global defaults for refresh, opacity, notifications and size; widgets start smaller (85%); General has "Scale all widgets" and "Size of new widgets"; Browse has a single "Install from..." menu; Data & privacy shows widget names.
- Confirmation boxes (install review, delete, restore, reset, new access) are now dark and host-drawn, and default to "No" (delete, restore and replace used to default to "Yes").
- The hotkey formerly called "Toggle edit mode" is now "Arrange widgets".
- Buddy moved out of the public catalog (private widget).
Fixed
- Buttons that should be hidden (for example "Download" on About when you are up to date) no longer show.
- Prayer Times errors are explained instead of failing silently.
Under the hood
- Umbra.Core split out as a cross-platform library with tests that run on Linux (first steps toward a Linux version; nothing Linux ships yet).
The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may warn until we sign it.
Umbra 1.8.0
Added
- Tab icons. Choose an icon for any tab in Settings > Tab groups (a button on each tab chip), or with
umbractl groups icon <id> <name>. Your choice wins over a widget's own icon. - A new update window. Updating Umbra now shows a small dark window with the progress (closing, installing, starting) instead of going quiet while the installer runs. If an update fails, it says why and starts your current Umbra again.
Changed
- The setup wizard (when you run the installer by hand) is dark and skips the welcome page.
- The "Update now" button and the tray item stay disabled from the click until Umbra restarts, so an update can't be started twice.
- Buddy 1.1.1: the original star drawings and a softer glow.
- Pull requests that change widgets or themes now commit the regenerated catalog index, and CI checks it (nothing is committed to
mainby a bot any more).
Fixed
- Tab groups: switching tabs no longer leaves the old tab showing or overlapping the new one.
- The update window is laid out correctly on scaled displays (centred logo, no empty band).
Umbra 1.7.2
Umbra 1.7.2
Changed
- Buddy 1.1.0: two glowing stars (you and your friend) replace the dots and text. A star glows while that person is online. Right-click to create/enter a pairing code, edit names or unpair.
- Event Radar 1.1.0: 3-month timeline and parser/layout updates.
Umbra 1.7.1
Changed
- Tab groups: the tab strip now shows one icon per widget, sits attached above the widget (it no longer covers content), follows your theme and accent, and is always visible. Hover an icon for the widget name.
Added
- Widgets can ship an optional
icon(PNG) for their tab; icons added to 14 catalog widgets. Others show a letter badge.
Fixed
- The "Tab group" dropdown in My widgets was unreadable (white on white).
Umbra 1.7.0
Added
- Tab groups: several widgets can share one slot and switch between them with tabs.
